About This Listing
This beautifully restored medieval house is all for you, no matter if you are a group of 2 or 8. Located in the old quarter, by the impressive castle walls of this real Spanish town, steeped in history and offering huge views.
A perfect hideaway...
The house sleeps maximum 8 people (3 double bedrooms and 2 single sofa beds)
There is one ground floor bathroom and the kitchen is fully furnished with gas oven, hob and fridge. A kitchen table seats 6 but there is also a patio table which seats 8-10 people comfortably.
In summer months, the upstairs bedroom has air-conditioning, the rest of the house stays cool due to foot-thick stone walls and the fact that the house is built into the hillside. In winter there is a log-fired stove, portable heating, bathroom radiator and all the beds have electric blankets.
Interaction with Guests
We will meet you and show you the house then leave you with the keys. We live nearby and are contactable by mobile for any problems you may have.
The house is in the old quarter, only metres away from the impressive castle walls of Alburquerque, a true Spanish town in the province of Badajoz, steeped in history and offering huge views. This is the place to visit if you love traditional town and country life, castles, festivals or just chilling out.
Discover abundant wildlife and lose yourself wandering along ancient tracks. Take in historic monuments and enjoy great food at many local traditional establishments both in Spain and across the border in the gorgeous Alentejo region of Portugal, less than 30 km away. If you're interested in ornithology, walking/ cycling, history, gastronomy and real Spain, come to Alburquerque!
There is an open air swimming pool in the town and a natural river pool in the nearby village of La Codosera.
The town can all be accessed on foot but you will need a car or bicycle to access sights out of the town like the natural swimming pool in La Codosera, the reservoir, world heritage sites of Marvao and Elvas. Good bus service to Badajoz.
Other Things to Note
Please note that the house, being centuries old, is built on several levels, has some low doorways and a fairly steep, narrow staircase. This may be an issue for people with limited mobility and is definitely not suitable for wheelchair users or young children.
Personally welcomed by our host and made to feel most welcome.
A property within the outer wall of the historic castle previously held by Spanish and Portugese and Moorish invaders. tastefully modernised in the Moorish style. Lacking nothing.
Very warm welcome from Martin when we arrived at the Moorish Retreat in Alburquerque - Spain ! Thank you for your kindness and your precious advices, your place is comfy !
We had a very enjoyable time in Extremadura, and to a large extent this was due to Rebecca and Martin's fascinating and well-equipped house, and their friendly attentiveness. They responded quickly when a couple of minor problems cropped up in the first couple of days, and I always felt confident they would be there if we needed them.
We really loved the rooftop-level garden with its views across vast distances, and of the 1000-year-old castle towering overhead. We also liked it when a neighbour's chicken called by every day and laid an egg for us!
Alburquerque is a really pleasant small town with old cobbled streets and all the shops you could need, enlivened by crowing cocks and storks circling overhead rather than the noisy traffic where we live. It's also central for visits to amazing places such as Caceres, Marvao (over the border in Portugal), Merida and Valencia Alcantara.
Stay there at least a week, if you can!
cosy little house, with everything you need and more. good beds, clean, cool in the hot summers of extremdura, nice kitchen and especially the roof-deck with a lot of speace, a lime-tree and view over the lovely city of alburquerque is very impressive. we had such a wunderful time there and definetly want to come back. Martin and Rebecca are very nice and helpful persons. thank you for the great time in alburquerque!
What an amazing property with excellent hosts!
This has been the best place we have stayed in and I will be coming back. I have already showed my friends all of the video and photos. If your looking for an authentic Spanish experience, steeped in amazing history and culture, with a beautiful castle in your back yard then this is for you! Oh by the way Marty and Becky really added to the wonderful experience and were so helpful and amazing hosts.
