The birdcage has a great vibe and is naturally charming with its interior and the outside kitchen. Not too fun to have to go outside down the stairs for the bathroom, but it's no big deal. If you plan to spend most of your time in the town or on the beach, then I'd recommend this place. Not for the leisure travelers, but it is nice to come back to after a long day.
Andy is a fantastic host. He helped set up surf lessons with Mauricio (Mauricio was great at teaching both a complete newbie to surf as well as helping improve the skills of another surfer with us. I highly recommend him if you are looking for surf lessons) as well as helped me book an atv for the weeks I was there (I definitely recommend an atv. The walk is certainly doable, but the atv made everything easier). The Surf Vista Villas really do have the best view, comfortable accommodations, and Andy is incredibly helpful with whatever you might need. I would definietly stay here again, or at least stop by and say hi to the dogs.
Andy is an extremely considerate host. The place is very comfortable, with floor to ceiling windows on all sides, charming colors on the walls and fabrics, a wooden ceiling, and a wrap-around balcony with an open-air kitchen and great views of nature. An especially amazing place for artists, because the lit balcony area is ideal for drawing outside, late in the night. We would definitely stay here again.
After making our first trip to Santa Teresa, it became very clear that no other place would have been as good as this one. Amazing views, perfect seclusion, sights and sounds of wildlife, and incredible help with things like our ATV rentals. Crystal was amazing.
Our stay at the Birdcage was awesome. Juan was so helpful and gave so many great suggestions on places to eat, where to rent surfboards and do yoga. While the birdcage is a great place to stay, try to stay in the other rooms at Surf Vista Villas to have a nicer view and more space - the Birdcage is essentially a bedroom (no closet, etc.) with a kitchen outside and bathroom downstairs. This place is ideal for one person
Andy was a generous, laidback, approachable host who made my inaugural trip to Costa Rica one that I'm eager to repeat. My mother and I stayed in the birdcage, roca mar and the nicoya suite over the course of two weeks and couldn't get over the workmanship and comforting touches to each of the rooms. The birdcage is adjacent to the other 4 villas in a standalone in-law type apartment with generous windows surrounding a cabin-like room with a queen bed, and outdoor kitchen. My favorite was our stay in the Roca Mar suite, which is a spacious lofty villa with 3 queen beds, ample air conditioning and fans, fabulous views both from inside and the breath-taking balcony, and truly unique out-door kitchen space on the porch. With family and friends dropping in on the visit, there was so much space, we could each find a quiet place to read and rest between all the beds, hammocks, chairs, and benches all around the villa. Santa Teresa is a very charming hospitable surf town providing a balance between local authenticity and tourism-amenities, and the adjacent beach access is quiet and pristine. The only thing I would've done differently is book a rental car straight from the airport for the duration of the trip. Not partial to putting my mom on an ATV, and finding the driveway-walk a bit daunting at the height of the day, a car is strongly recommended to get the most out of the area/visit (though other visitors to the villa at the same time did seem to manage with a combination of daily atv rentals and buses). Luckily for me, Andy was able to arrange a rental after I arrived and even offered to shop around for the best deal and had it brought right up to the villa- indispensable help for non-speaker tourists! It hasn't been a whole month since my return home and my friends and family are already counting down for an excuse to return. Hoping the 3rd story villa will be ready next time!
