The Chestnuts is a traditional guest house with loads of warmth and charm. Offering all the modern comforts but still keeping the character of a Victorian home. It is located in a quiet corner, a short walk from either Windermere or Bowness village.

The Space

The Chestnuts has seven very comfortable double bedrooms which all have en suite bathrooms. Two rooms have standard 5ft double beds, four rooms have 5ft four-poster bed and one room has a bed which can either be two single beds or a 6ft bed.
All our rooms are en suite, some with a bath as well as a shower. We provide hairdryers, TV with dvd player and tea/coffee making facilities in all rooms. Our four-poster rooms also have bath robes.

Guest Access

We have a charming dining room which also has a small lounge area where guests are served complimentary tea/coffee on arrival.
Our breakfast is tailored to you, whether it be a full English, vegetarian or smoked salmon! Guests are given their own key so that they have access to the guest house and their room at all times.
Breakfast is served between 8.30 and 9.15am although earlier breakfasts can be arranged.

Interaction with Guests

We can provide advice on walks and any other activities which may be of interest. We can direct you to the best restaurants and pubs of which there are many to choose from in Windermere, Bowness and the surrounding area.

The Neighborhood

Many of our guests love that we are only a ten minute stroll to either Bowness village, which is by the lake, or Windermere village. Being located in the southern area of the Lake District National park we are only a short drive away from some of the most popular walks and attractions.

Getting around

There is a good public transport system as well as very good guided tour operators.
Windermere railway station is a fifteen minute walk from the guest house.
We have our own, on site, car park.

Other Things to Note

We are sorry, but we do not take advance bookings for one night only on a Saturday and there may be certain periods when the minimum stay is three nights.
The guest house provides free wi fi.

Check In
  • Chestnuts is the perfect base in the Lakes, the house is beautiful and the room was very clean and comfortable and with excellent facilities. Sadly we didn't get to meet Heather but the other staff were extremely helpful and gave us a map of the area when we arrived and gave us directions to other places we needed to visit. We were only in the Lakes briefly for a race but the location of the B&B was perfect and in a stunning area, can't wait to back and explore some more!

  • Heather's room is extraordinary! Very very lovely! Heather and the other staff are friendly! The house can be located easily through (website hidden) map or gps. 5 mints walk to the lake and 5 mints to the town center! Strongly recommended! And the breakfast is super nice!

  • We very much enjoyed our 2 night stay. The location was great and we could walk everywhere. Our room was very comfortable. In fact the bed was one of the best We have ever slept in.The feel of the B&B was very quaint and we were made feel very much at home on arrival and for the duration of our stay by Heather and Nigel. They also provided a very nice cooked breakfast. We would definitely stay with them again.

  • Excellently run B&B, quality and an attention to detail wherever you look. Books an DVDs lay ready for use during your stay. Enough electric outlets for charging your mobile devices. Just a few minutes walk to either Windemere and Bowness, and just around the corner from a fine local pub. Heather is nice, charming, and most helpful with any question you might have. Can be fully recommended.

  • Heather is a an absolutely wonderful hostess. She is very attentive, helpful, and I enjoyed our conversations. She also very accessible should any odd needs or situations arise. Our room was very comfortable and cozy. We are on a road throughout the UK and our previous Airbnb stay was in a private flat which felt very homey (which is nice after a day out and about in a strange land). I was worried that we would lose that little feeling being at B & B guest inn sort of place (especially since my daughter and I have introverted personalities). Not so at Chestnuts! After a long day of hiking, my daughter and I, felt VERY much at home in our room and rarely felt like other people were present.

Most of the B & B's I saw in Windermere were located right on the main road or right smack in the midsts of where large groups of tourists gather like herds of sheep. Chestnuts is perfectly settled away from the throngs yet soooo close to all the shops, restaurants, public transit, local sights & attractions. Yes. We especially loved that where we were going at night was going (email hidden) with no foot traffic passing by. I would highly recommend staying at Heather's to anyone. (^_^)! Thank you, Heather! It was a pleasure to meet you.

  • Lovely BandB. Comfortable and clean. Friendly welcome including a pot of tea and piece of lovely home made cake. Beautifully kept and colourful garden in a characterful setting within easy walking distance between Windermere or Bowness. Little luxuries such as good toiletries and a cafetiere were appreciated as was the helpfulness of the owners in providing some bits and pieces we had needed to alter trousers and press clothes. I like to come and stay again as the atmosphere was relaxing and welcoming.

  • Chestnuts is a great spot to use as ones base to travel around the lakes as a whole, it is also perfectly positioned between Windermere and Bowness giving us choices without having to use transport. Heather and Nigel run a tight ship and the guesthouse is a peaceful, island of relaxation amongst all the wonderful activities of the area.

  • My boyfriend and I absolutely loved our stay at Chestnuts. The bed was comfy and the room clean, and we had a dual aspect room that was flooded with light. The breakfast was lovely, and location wise, it was a pleasant 10 minute walk to get to the water.

    Response from Heather:

    Hi Henrietta
Thank you so much for your comments, especially regarding the bed. Someone has just left a review on trip advisor complaining that their bed was 'like straw' and yet all our beds are the same and you, like many other guest, tell us how comfortable they are! I just can't work out it out!

I have lived in Windermere for twenty years apart from a brief stay in London. Brief because I missed the colour green and clean air! I didn't realise how green the Lake District was until I moved to London. I try very hard not to take where I live for granted. Nigel and I have run the Chestnuts for nearly four years and still enjoy it! The building was built in the late 1800's and we have tried to retain as many traditional features as possible. I love walking, my dogs, swimming and my new hobby - geocaching!
