I have a most exceptional stay at Guste's house in Ubud. Walking into his place in Mas after the long drive from Ulluwatu, I felt like I had entered a magical place when I walked into his family compound, greeted by a master woodworker, birds and many wood sculptures. The place itself is beautiful, quiet and comfortable, a real Balinese home. However the real reason to come to Guste's house is to touch into Balinese history and culture. He is a wonderful teacher with a long family lineage in the area (grandfather was a well known astrologer) and great pride. He, Putri and his family all went out of their way to make my visit extraordinary, including taking me with them to temple (since spirituality is my interest). If the great mystical traditions of Bali and its culture are your interests, this is a most perfect place to land in Ubud!

Gusde's villa was great! Everything was as expected, and we really enjoyed our stay. Clean, bed was made daily, nice breakfast every morning (fruit, omelette, fruit juice, and coffee), nice swimming pool, and there was even free parking. The location is great, 5 minute drive to central Ubud but also far enough to enjoy quiet evenings. My husband and I ended up staying another night and the team made it easy and comfortable for us to do so. We also asked about laundry and they helped us to get it done by the local people nearby for very reasonable price. Great value and very friendly staffs. Absolutely recommended! Bonus: they're on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) map and therefore very easy to find.

Sweet host family, good communicators. Lovely spacious room with sunshine pouring in throughout the afternoon (and AC to make it bearable! ) I enjoyed staying in an authentic traditional Balinese "compound", behind the "art shop" where all those fantastic wood carvings get made and sold, especially the intricate doors. Gusde's father is the woodcarver artist, also loving caretaker of the many caged pigeons. And a private rice field/palm tree view from the back. Unfortunately the location in Mas made it less than convenient for me, wanting to be closer (walking distance) to Ubud, which it's not, while the intense traffic and condition of the sidewalks with construction etc, made it hard to walk nearby. The hosts do offer a free daily ride to and from their restaurant on Monkey Forest road with their friendly driver (a 10-15 minute drive in light traffic, more at the times they usually offer it). They were also kind enough to allow me to check out late since I was being picked up later and they had no guests checking in that night. Thank you for your hospitality Gusde and Putri.

Our experience at the Balinese house was great! The best parts are that it's a traditional house, the breakfasts were delicious, how close it is to the city (15-20 min). It quiet and peaceful and exactly what we needed! Side note: We interacted more with Wayan than with Gusde (both of whom were very kind), since he drove us around. Wayan was brilliant. He talked to us about our plans and made recommendations and was always willing to help us out.

If you want to immerse yourself in Balinese culture this is a one of a kind stay. Gusde and his family take you in like one of their own and are always around to graciously help in whatever way you may need. Their house has amazing art and craftsmanship and the room is very peaceful and faces lush rice fields. They were so sweet, organized my scooter and I even got invited to photograph a ceremony at their temple and was honored to get an astrology reading from his uncle who is a holy man. Any time I'm in Ubud I will definitely be staying with Gusde. He has other villas that are quite lovely as well. All his staff are ready to help. Definitely recommend going to his restaurant Pesto in the center and get the Balinese duck. Best I've ever had! Highly recommended if you're looking for a Balinese cultural immersion!!
