/Sharon Heights neighborhood of West Menlo Park, on a triangle bound by Sharon Rd, Santa Cruz Ave and the Alameda de las Pulgas. Easy biking distance to Stanford, SLAC, downtown Menlo Park, Sand Hill Rd and U.S. Highway 280.
We are less than 20 minutes walking distance from the northwest corner of the Stanford campus and about 35 minutes' walking distance from the center of campus. We are also walking or easy biking distance to downtown Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and the Stanford Shopping Center.
West Menlo Park is full of bike paths and nice, easy walks. And we’re less than 3 miles from the Alpine Rd entrance to the famous Stanford "Dish walk", a paved path through the foothills with spectacular views. And there’s lots of other great hiking in the area too. We love hiking; let us know if you'd like some area recommendations.
We’re empty nesters, have lived in the area most of our lives, and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the area or provide recommendations. This is an ideal set-up for a visiting student, scholar or professor. Many of our guests are also in town visiting friends or family in the area.
You can get from SFO to the downtown Menlo Park Caltrain station via public transportation, then walk or take a taxi from the train station to the studio. We recommend this over SuperShuttle--cost is much less, and it's takes just about the same amount of time. A private limo is at least $65 plus tip each way.
We are walking distance to the Avy Avenue/Alameda de las Pulgas shopping area, which includes a Starbucks, U.S. Post Office, gas station, the highly acclaimed Flea Street Café restaurant, and a favorite Stanford beer-and-burger hangout, the Dutch Goose. We are also walking distance to Sharon Heights Shopping Center, which includes another Starbucks, a Shell gas (petrol) station, a 24-hour Safeway, a CVS pharmacy, yogurt shop, European deli, shoe repair, travel agency, a Mexican restaurant, and the highly rated Mitsunobu Japanese restaurant.
Off-street parking for one vehicle is available, just outside the gate to your studio entrance. Overnight parking is also allowed on your side of the street without limit. Overnight parking in the City of Menlo Park (other side of the street) is restricted, but courtesy warnings are issued before any citations.
Many of our guests are international scholars coming to teach, research or study at Stanford. Many of them prefer not to rent a car and have been happy to be walking or biking distance from campus. If you'd like to bike, we have a spare bike we can let you use at a nominal cost: $5 a day, $25 a week or $75 a month plus $75 refundable deposit. This is about half the cost of rentals on campus.
HOUSE RULES - NO SMOKING, no exceptions. No shoes (to keep the cottage extra-clean). Recycling actively encouraged.
• NO SMOKING, no exceptions.
• SHOE-FREE please (to keep our studio extra clean).
• RECYCLING encouraged--we meet our city's goal of recycling over 50%.

Laurel was amazing!! The unit was perfect. Super easy to check in, the unit had everything I needed. I loved the private entrance. I worked odd hours at the hospital, so it was nice not to have to worry about waking anyone up or bothering anyone else at any time because of the private entrance.
The neighborhood is beautiful! I walked every day to explore different parts of it and get exercise too.
I would definitely recommend this unit because it made my trip absolutely amazing. I had to leave a week early due to family illness, and Laurel was amazing in sorting it out with Air BNB to get me a little refund, which I appreciated greatly.
My son just finished staying 6 weeks at Laurel's studio and it was a great location for his time at Stanford. The studio was a perfect size for him and Laurel was so accommodating. Day 1 it was very hot in the apartment so a small room air conditioner was immediately brought over! The location is walking distance to the university and 2 shopping centers with plenty of restaurant choices when he didn't feel like cooking!! When Laurel is away her son, Danny, makes sure he is available to answer any questions or take care of any problems. As my son is only a high school senior, I was happy to have them available if any situation came up and they were only a phone call away from me if I had questions! Matt would definitely like to stay there again if he does another summer intern program at the university!!
This place was so far the best for sure! The photos can't tell every charm of this cozy studio. I didn't get a chance to use the kitchen during this trip, but there are plenty of dishes, utensils, and etc. the bed is so comfortable, and bedding is super clean. Laurel was very kind and supportive. Highly recommend this place.
Laurel and her husband were great host. The studio was clean, cozy and perfect for my three nights. Would love to return for additional business trips. Thanks Laurel!
When I was moving from Germany to the Bay area for a job at Stanford, I stayed the first few weeks in Laurels studio before I found a long-term apartment. I felt very welcomed by Laurel. She even picked me up from the airport when I arrived.
The location was great because Stanford as well as supermarkets were only a short bike ride away. The studio was as described, very clean and was equipped with everything I needed.
Laurel has a cozy studio on a nice spot close to caltrain and Stanford. It is well equiped and everything works. Laurel was a great host who was always ready to help out if needed. Thanks for a wonderful stay!
The studio was really nice and comfy. You find everything you need in the kitchen and bedroom incl. towels, kitchen rolls, tissues, shower gel aso. Further there are three different wifi's to choose from. The only thing I'd proposed to improve would be darker window blinds as I personally need it quite dark to sleep but as I anyway had to get up early every day that was no problem.
Mirja, Our decision about the window blinds was tough-- balance between letting enough light in during the day vs dark enough for sleep. We have black-out blinds in 1 of our guest rooms, and maybe we can find a way to provide more darkness in this studio. We do have eye masks and I will in the meantime place one in the room for guests to use. Thanks again! Laurel

About the Host, Laurel
My husband Steve and I are long-time local residents; I was born in Palo Alto, so a real native! Steve is from England; we were high-school sweethearts (his dad was at SLAC for a year), then we reconnected 20+ years later & got married! Now we're empty nesters with 4 kids in our blended family, all living in California. We have a successful home-based marketing agency, so we’re around most of the time for your convenience and security.
We love hosting and also traveling-- to my husband's native UK (lots of family & friends still there). Have been to China, Cuba, and much of western Europe. Hoping to travel more in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
In the US, we love road trip in the Western state (our Tesla is our biggest splurge!), and exploring big cities, especially NYC & LA.Our favorite trip of all was a family stay in New Orleans-- fabulous music, food, history & people!
Since Airbnb is asking, the "5 things we can't live without" are (not necessarily in this order): movies (Laurel) & music (Steve), exercise, NPR (Laurel) & BBC (Steve), our kids & cats.
We are Michael Pollan converts and think his 7-word food philosophy sums it up beautifully: "eat food (as opposed to food-like products), not too much, mostly plants." We buy local, sustainable, organic as much as we can.
