Fox Den and Fawn Hideaway are located at Fern Rock Mountain Retreat, a picturesque 16-acre wooded mountain property with fire pits, hot tub, small pond, outdoor games, covered porch, and decks.

Fox Den is an adorable 390 sq ft, one bedroom log cabin with a queen bed and separate kitchen/living area. If you have three or four guests, you get the next-door 165 sq ft one-room log cabin with queen bed. Fawn Hideaway guests share Fox Den's kitchen/bathroom. It is NOT rented to a separate group.

The space
We are very grateful for this “back to nature” property and when you visit, you will understand why. Whether you want to relax in a hammock on a lazy summer day, take a hike through the fall foliage, enjoy a hot tub soak in winter, or plan a spring picnic, Fox Den offers a romantic vacation getaway for one or two couples or a small family.

If you have a larger group, look for the Fern Rock Lodge listing on this site. It can accommodate up to ten guests.

Fox Den is a 390 sq ft, one-floor log cabin with a separate bedroom (queen bed), one bathroom (shower), and an open kitchen / living area. The double futon in the living area may be used for one or two children to sleep on, when requested in advance of the stay.

Meals can be prepared in the fully equipped kitchen or on the Weber gas grill. Both the indoor and outdoor small dining tables can seat up to four people. There is also a cafe table for two on the back deck.

The Fox Den front covered porch runs the length of the cabin and there is a side and back deck, so there is plenty of outdoor living space for your enjoyment. Relax while soaking in the outdoor hot tub, sit around the back fire pit, or follow the meandering Ridgeview Trail down to the Pond.

Right next door is Fawn Hideaway, an adorable 165 sq ft, one room log cabin that serves as a detached second bedroom for the Fox Den. IF FAWN HIDEAWAY IS ADDED TO YOUR RESERVATION, your one or two guests staying there will be sharing the Fox Den bathroom and kitchen. For your convenience, Fawn Hideaway includes a mini-fridge for easy access to refreshments/snacks.

YOU CAN ADD FAWN HIDEAWAY to your reservation by selecting 3 or 4 guests, whichever is applicable. PLEASE NOTE: Fawn Hideaway is only rented as an addition to Fox Den; never as a separate rental. So, you won't have strangers sharing your Fox Den bathroom or kitchen.

TO ADD YOUR MINOR CHILDREN TO YOUR FOX DEN RESERVATION: If your additional one or two guests are your minor children, and you would prefer for them to sleep on the double futon in Fox Den, please let us know that in your message and we'll deduct the extra charges for Fawn Hideaway. This property is kid friendly, but not “child proofed” and requires adult supervision.

Fox Den and Fawn Hideaway are separated from Fern Rock Lodge by about 200 yards. Fern Rock Lodge is a larger antique log home on a separate knoll. It has three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, an amazing detached screened porch, hot tub, and outdoor shower. If your group includes more than four people or you just want more space and amenities, definitely check out the listing on this site.

Guest access
Guests have access to all of Fox Den and Fawn Hideaway, if it's added to their reservation. Private access includes the outdoor area surrounding the cabins. This includes the covered front porch, two decks, hot tub, fire pit, and Ridgeview Trail.

Shared areas include the main driveway, Guest Shed with adjacent parking area, the pond, front meadow, and the woods surrounding the property up to the ridge line.

Please make every effort to respect the privacy of other guests.

Important Notes:

1. The cabins are built on a knoll and there are some steep areas. Being sure-footed is necessary for walking between buildings and exploring the property.

2. The Fox Den driveway is steep. All wheel drive vehicles are needed in good weather and four-wheel drive in icy/snowy weather. Parking is also available at base of the Fox driveway.

3. Children of all ages are very welcome but need adult supervision all times. Wide-spaced porch railings, some high elevations/steep areas, the pond, the hot tub, and gas log fireplace are potential hazards. Parents of young children need to be extra vigilant, especially for little ones (under 2 years old).

4. GPS may not provide accurate directions. Directions can be provided after your reservation is confirmed, but feel free to inquire before booking, if needed.

Fern Rock Mountain Retreat is located on a quiet, paved, state-maintained road, which becomes gravel just past our entrance. The property offers something for everyone, from those who want to hunker down in a peaceful setting with a variety of on-site activities to those who are looking for a relaxing home base with driving proximity to outdoor adventures, Hot Springs, and Asheville.

From the property, you can drive 11 miles to Hot Springs (25 minutes), one of only three incorporated towns in Madison County. Hot Springs offers independently owned specialty shops and restaurants, the Hot Springs Spa, and numerous outdoor activities.

Drive in the other direction and you will find downtown Asheville just 34 miles away (50 minutes to the I-240 downtown exit), with the Biltmore Estate, a vibrant music scene, lots of independently-owned restaurants, breweries, and many tourist activities.

Madison County is home to 30 miles of the Appalachian Trail (AT), fishing, tubing, white water rafting, and nearby Max Patch, one of North Carolina's most popular AT hikes, located at 4600 feet on a grassy bald mountain top.

Trust General Store and Cafe, a short five mile drive, offers basic grocery items, arts & crafts, fishing licenses, and gasoline. (You'll pay more for gas here because it's the only place around that sells gas.). The closest full grocery store (Ingles) is at least 40 minutes in either direction, and we suggest that you get groceries on your way in to the property.

Trust Cafe offers lunch and dinner. About 3.5 miles from the property, you'll find another small restaurant, Dave's 209, known for its burgers, fries, and homemade shakes. Their hours vary throughout the year.

1 1/4 hours away in Maggie Valley, Haywood County, Cataloochee Ski Area offers 18 slopes and trails. 1 1/2 hours in the other direction, you'll find Wolf Ridge Ski Resort, with 72 acres of ski terrain.

Hello – We’re Carol and Doug. We were drawn to Asheville over 23 years ago and have enjoyed the vibrant, diverse city environment. When we began to look for an idyllic setting for our own family gatherings and to offer as a vacation rental, we weren’t exactly sure what we were looking for, but confident we would know it when we saw it. We were right! We fell in love with this property, which had been tastefully decorated and obviously well maintained by the previous owners. We especially like that we have a full view of the stars on a dark, clear night This property offers something for everyone, from those who want to hunker down in a peaceful setting with a variety of on-site activities to those who are looking for a relaxing home base with close proximity to outdoor adventures, Hot Springs, and Asheville. . This is our personal retreat property, so naturally it is filled with personal items...please respect our space that we are sharing with you. Our goal is your perfect stay! We welcome and appreciate any and all feedback and will do our best to help you feel welcome and comfortable. We hope that you enjoy your stay!
