Description

The space

A farm on the West Side of Chicago? Yep, that's unique!

Guest access

CTA Green Line will have you down town, to the lake or to Michigan Ave in 11 minutes. Moments to the United Center for a concert, Hawks or Bulls game. Easy access to highways. Plenty of free parking. The bedroom has a comfy queen bed. There are two full size, fold down sofa beds in the main room. The yard is at your disposal with a grill, smoker and patio. There is a bike share Divy station a short walk away.

Interaction with guests

We can be your host and cater to you and your family with meals, some transportation and concierge service or you can grab a key and be on your way.

The neighborhood

East Garfield Park is definitely the inner city! It's also erupting with art. A nationally recognized art corridor both highbrow and underground. Think SoHo in the 70's. We like to run our rebel flag high here. Stop at a beer tasting, check out a painting at a loft gallery, see some mud wrestling, milk a goat and buy some fresh Chevre, grab some BBQ all in one walk.

Getting around

The Metra, CTA and Kedzie bus are all less than 5 minutes walk. Where are you going? You can get there. Lyft or Uber cab from either airport will cost about $25 and take 20 to 40 minutes.

Other things to note

The unit is a garden unit with free laundry and Wi-Fi. There is a grill and smoker. We sometimes have bikes you can borrow and occasionally a car.

This particular unit is in the basement and is pictured at the very bottom of the photo of the building, below the red stairs, with the three small windows. (The only windows in the apartment.) The photographs of the back yard are not the view from the garden unit, but from the upper unit next door. The back door of the apartment leads into a common un-kept/unlocked laundry/utility room. The back door of the apartment door that lead to this common area had a broken frame which allowed the door to be pulled open easily whether or not it was locked. There is one bed, 2 futons (only one pictured) and a small twin size roll out cot. The bed in the bedroom had a bent frame and about 1/3 of the support boards broken and or missing from the frame. The boards were located under the bed and under the dresser in the closet. One of the futons offered had two extra cushions on it to try to make it somewhat more comfortable due to it being very hard and unforgiving for sitting, much less sleeping. The second night the mattress from the rollout cot was placed on the futon, which helped considerably. This same futon had some issues with the legs on the left side; the futon was being held up by a soup pot. The leg was found in the drawer the other pots were in. The bathroom offers a cool looking shower, no bath. The showerhead was similar to a rain shower. The water flowed gently straight down. There was plenty of hot water for all 4 of us and there were plenty of towels and washcloths to go around. Because it is early April, there was nothing yet growing at the farm. The animals on the farm at the time of our stay were 2 goats and 15 chickens. There were no pigs and I didn’t see any bee hives in yard. The host has 2 very nice, socialized, well behaved dogs that share the back yard. Barking could be heard throughout the night, however. Nicky, our host was very accessible, answered the phone and addressed many of our concerns immediately. She commented about how no one had ever mentioned the broke door frame in the last 4 years and returned that night and nailed a strip of wood so that the door would at least latch when closed. She assured us that she had never had any issues since she had lived there and that we were perfectly safe. She also really went out of her way to make sure my 11 year old daughter was happy by bringing over a microwave so that she could make popcorn. She is very likable, approachable and has a warm personality. The property is in the inner city. In the neighborhood you will see boarded up buildings, drug deals occurring in the nearby grocery store parking lot/corners, and more trash floating around the gutters, streets and sidewalks/yards...

Nicky's place was very clean, comfortable, and cozy. The weather did not cooperate with us so we were unable to interact with the farm animals but they were very cute. I would definitely suggest to sign up for an Uber driver. It was very easy to request one and you were downtown in minutes. I would recommend staying at Nicky's place.

Great overnighter and we could bring the dogs too! Nice little coffee shop inside the Christian center, just across the street:)

I loved the interior of this place and how easy the check-in process was. However, the location and size of home was not as expected. Overall, though, was a great experience!

A great cozy apartment in a nice quiet neighborhood - our group was two forty-somethings, a 19-year-old, and a 13-year-old. About a 5-minute walk to the green line, and parking on the street near the apartment makes it super convenient!

Our quality of life depends on how well we deal with adversity! Feel positive. Live positive. I grew up in a small costal town in Maine. When I turned 19 I realized that I was a closet wanderer. So I hit the road and covered much of the U.S. and all of Europe. I taught skiing in the Rockies and rode my BMW R65-LS from coast to coast. When I was in Europe I was amazed at how willing people were to open their homes to a total stranger. I had one of my best experiences living with a family in Romania in the Carpathian Mountains. Amazing! I feel this is the best way possible to travel. It's part of why I love Air B&B. Hotel shmotel! Live the life of the area. That's an experience. Now my wandering days are over. I'm rooted in one of the coolest communities I know. Rich with art and spirit. I have two amazing girls that help me garden, can, collect eggs and milk. My partner is a fellow East Coast boy, avid hockey player and my right hand man. I also tour with an ABBA tribute band as well as a Pink Floyd tribute band but don't hold that against me. I hope you like it here half as much as we do!!
