This is a quiet neighborhood. Everyone has 5 or more acres. Many neighbors grow coffee, macnuts, avocados and fruits of all kind. We could arrange farm tours for you if you would like. We are very involved with our local community and It is a great one.
There is a local bus system. You can find there schedule on line. Hele-on Bus. We are a short distance up from the highway the bus route travels on. But we do recommend you rent a car, so you can see a lot of what the island has to offer.

Quiet time 9:00 pm. No pets. No children unless pre-approved. No visitors unless pre-approved. No smoking in or around the house. We are on rain catchment so we ask that you conserve your water usage. Also try and limit your hot water usage. Of course you can take a hot shower but use the cold water otherwise if possible. And electricity is very expensive in Hawaii, so please shut lights off when not needed. We should all conserve valuable resources where ever we go, it will make the planet happy. Mahalo
We stayed 3 nights in Kat and Joe's Hale; it's a great place beautifully located, we loved the drive from Captain Cook south along the lush green forest with colorful flowers, definitely make a stop at the South Kona fruit stand to buy some exotic fruit, best mango I've ever tasted. Short drive to City of Refuge historical site. There's snorkel gear you can borrow at the cottage. We found a copy of the Big Island revealed on the table where we read about a hike to the Captain Cook monument at Kealakekua bay, strenuous hike but the snorkeling was amazing! We saw lots of tropical fish and even dolphins. It's a great place to stay, but keep in mind that it's still a long drive from Captain Cook, further south than you might expect.
Thank you for the wonderful time at your little house. We liked it very much. Everybody was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed reading the prevented books about Big Island.
Joe hat uns sehr freundlich aufgenommen. Die Wegbeschreibung war gut und alles leicht zu finden. Schöne Tage in ruhiger Umgebung, in einer sehr geschmackvoll eingerichteten kleinen Wohnung. Urlaub! Mahalo
Kat and Joe were excellent hosts. They were always there to answer our questions (email or in person) and gave us good tips on local places to visit. We had an amazing stay on Big Island and had such a positive experience. The apartment feels very spacious yet cozy. It has everything you need including a bbq grill.
It is a great location - very quiet and in nature. Best sleep we had across all 3 islands we visited. Also has a nice view of the sunset over the water. I would suggest to stop for groceries on the way since not everything is as close on Big Island.
We definitely recommend this place and would come back!
Joe was there to welcome us and then we didn't see much of him or Kat. However, our stay at their place was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We particularly enjoyed the full size kitchen and very lovely carpentry and finishing work. The location was perfect for snorkelling at the Place of Refuge and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. If you are looking for a place to explore the South Island we would recommend Joe And Kat's place.
The description of the apartment was very accurate and we appreciated all of the workmanship and little touches that made it comfortable. Unfortunately, we didn't meet Joe, but Kat was incredibly nice and helpful.
Bottom line: we loved our three night stay at Ohia Malu Hale so much that we made plans to return for the final three days of our trip. The space is absolutely perfect for people who like to keep things simple, comfortable and have a nice place to cook meals in. It is quite a spacious 1bd/1ba, and there are two large closets so you can really settle in and not feel like your are surrounded by "stuff". The kitchen was well stocked, bed was comfortable, shower has good water pressure. Really, just perfect accommodations for a couple looking to relax away from resort-land. Even better, Kat and Joe were wonderful hosts, they are so accomodating and helpful. They made us feel like friends, not paying guests. I've stayed numerous places on the Big Island and this is definitely my favorite.
About the Host, Kat And Joe
We grew up in Minnesota. Joe is part Hawaiian and his family is originally from Waipio Valley. We have been together for 20 years. He is the love of my life. Between us we have 5 children, 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. We are both very active. We bike, swim, hike, camp and like to travel. We have 5 acres that holds 3 homes that Joe built. We also have a cabin in Waipio Valley on the land where Joe's mother was raised. I am a very blessed lady!!!!!
