Chuck made us feel very welcome at his little cabin, and showed us all around his property. He also gave us lots of useful advice. Beautiful views, sweet dog, and awesome coffee - which he grew himself! Thanks Chuck!
I booked this place very hastily as I had been staying on the Hilo side of the island and decided to stay the night in Kona, rather than rushing. It was a bit of a shock to the system after staying in faerie wonderlands around Puna, this is not one of those. I didn't really read the description as I was a bit hasty in my decision, that's a lesson to me I guess, it is pretty much as advertised. The views are great if you don't mind looking past construction equipment to the ocean. Chuck is a very generous and lovely soul, also extremely eccentric. My experience with outdoor showers in the past has been quite good, with ones looking into the rainforest; this one is basically a hose, separated from the kitchen with a curtain. This is not a faerie wonderland. It was great to get some laundry done, I was very grateful for that, and Chuck's very generous sharing of his fruit. I can imagine that when it is finished it will be nicer, but at the moment, it's basically a construction site.
Every place has its own flavor and style; Chuck's place is a work in progress. Some of the facilities such as the outdoor kitchen are rustic for some people, but that is part of the charm. Chuck is a warm and gracious host, always ready to talk and share what he has and know of the island, Hawaii.
Chuck was great to stay with, he's very chilled, open and welcoming. His place is a work in progress, which will be a masterpiece when finished.
He gave us a great place to explore nearby, shared all his plans with us, we picked fruit from his garden and had it for breakfast. We liked it so much we stayed with him again at the end of our tour of the island.
If you are looking for a 5 stars place. Dont go there, but you will miss a beautiful mind and an a funny personality: Chuck! He is awesome,he knows everything about his island, he is really nice and funny and will you make feel like your home. He brought us twice see the mantas on his own boat and we went lobster sight seen! ;)
We had a great great time over there. And we had the chance to get Kona coffee every morning from his land! And papyas, litchies and avocado...
We def will go back to his place.
And the bed is one of the most greatest I had in US!
Cheers again Chuck! And thanks for everything!!!
Charles is great! The room was absolutely beautiful and we couldn't ask for a more generous host. Definitely a must stay if looking for affordable rooms around Kona.
The place was as advertised--funky and simple. Down a side road and off the beaten path but close to a good restaurant. Teshima's. Great location with a splendid view of the ocean. This place is not for everyone. Very rustic. Bathroom and shower outside the room. Cabin is very small, but with TV and internet. Chuck was very accommodating. He gave us a beer on arrival, then gave us a tour of the property. In the morning Chuck made wonderful coffee and whacked open a papaya from a nearby tree. Chuck's been around the area for a long time and knows what's what. Plus he has semi-wild donkeys on the property and a great dog and cat.
