Eruption Information:
Kailua-Kona, located on the west coast of the Island of Hawaii, is a two hour drive and 100 miles away from the eruption area, which is located on the far eastern side of the island. Transportation, the overall climate, sights, activities, are unchanged from normal for 95% or more of the island. Beach activities, snorkeling, surfing, fishing, hiking, biking, tours, swimming with the dolphins, manta ray viewing, scuba diving, and self touring for most island sights remains unchanged.
The island, also known as the “Big Island” contains more than 4000 square miles, and is larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined. The eruption area is in the east rift zone, and the total involved area is occurring in a 5 mile area. Volcanic activity of some sort is normal for this island, and for the last 35 years or so, most of the time, lava has been actively flowing into the ocean or viewable on the island in rift zones or calderas in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; ash and sulfur gases have been continuously emitted from vents and fissures during that time. While visually stunning, the main difference with this eruption is that it is occurring in a residential area, outside of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and is the first significant eruption outside of the park in several years. Obviously, for those affected in the immediate area with over 500 homes destroyed so far, it is a life changing and significant event. State and Federal government authorities, along with many local organizations, are providing relief assistance to affected residents. However, for the vast majority of activities of the residents and visitors, there is effectively no difference in the quality of their experience or enjoyment of Hawaii.
The only issue for some visitors may be the air quality which is more a function of the trade winds in conjunction with how large of an ash plum is emanating from the eruption site. It is not as much related to the dramatic lava fountains shown in the media (see current air quality on the island via link below).
