Enjoy a truly unique vacation experience at the High House on Black Thorn Farm and Kitchen. The private home on this farm and culinary destination features a spacious, eclectically styled interior plus a covered porch with sprawling mountain views. Ask your hosts about ordering baked goods, authentic farm-to-table meals and cooking classes during your stay. Peace, beauty and tranquility await you at this true mountain retreat.
The space
Black Thorn Farm and Kitchen is located only 35-40 minutes from Asheville's renowned restaurants, breweries and crafts. At 3000 feet elevation, guests can enjoy unspoiled long range views of the mountains surrounding Big Sandy Mush valley. A well maintained gravel road leads you through the farm's lush sheep pastures. Guests can relax on the farm or explore Western North Carolina's many outdoor adventures — hiking, waterfalls, and rafting to name a few.
We want you to feel comfortable and welcome on our dynamic farm while you are staying with us. Observe our flock of pastured meat and wool sheep as they eat their way across our 43 acres of mountain hills. Enjoy the best of both worlds as you relax in the well appointed comfort of the house and then venture out on a walk about the farm filled with seasonal delights and crisp clean mountain air.
The High House has been outfitted and designed to meet all of your needs while you are vacationing in the mountains. The balance of the open floor plan, spacious lay out of the house and large bedrooms are perfect for family and friends traveling together - everyone can have their own private bedrooms for rest and breaks AND enjoy time together in the living room, around the fireplace or outside on the porch.
We were led to farming by a love of food. To us, the food we raise here on the land is meant for enjoying - agriculture and cooking are one and the same! We invite you to deepen your vacation stay by adding FRESH DELIVERED BAKED GOODS, HANDS ON COOKING CLASSES WITH THE SHEPHERDS AND CHEFS, and or a FULLY CATERED MEAL FROM OUR FARM HARVESTS. You are not just staying in the mountains, you are tasting the mountains. Contact your hosts for more information.
Guest access
The High House is a stand alone house located above the farm so you will have total privacy during your stay. The house is a ranch style and comfortably accommodates its guests with an easy and open floor plan. The environment is cozy any time of year! The farm is 43 acres of rolling to steep mountain land located in a quiet, private and sparsely populated cove. Guests are welcome to explore around the farm, in the creeks and also around the pond. Enjoy the peace of the pond and if you desire, catch and release fishing as well.
Other things to note
-We have fast, reliable fiber optic internet WIFI at the house and it is suitable for all types of remote work. Although there is no cell coverage on the farm, by utilizing the 'WIFI calling' setting on your phone, you can use your devices as you normally would for calls and texts.
-We offer a PACK and PLAY and HIGHCHAIR upon request and any of the three bedrooms are suitable for infants.
-Because we are a working livestock farm, we ask that our guests refrain from bringing dogs - thank you for understanding this unique consideration!
-The farm road is gravel and accessible year round. Our guests arrive and get around in an array of vehicles with ease but we do not recommend very low profile cars as the road is a country gravel road - so maybe just don't rent a Corvette for your stay!
-Do you have more family or friends joining you on your trip? We also have a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom cottage for rent - check it out here on AirBnB: "Cozy Cottage on Peaceful Sheep Farm"
