Stargaze — while you can — in Northern Chile.
The deserts of northern Chile, whose dry, clear skies and high altitude make for unmatched stargazing, have long been home to some of the world’s largest research telescopes. Those stunning starscapes, as well as more down-to-earth charms, have lately proved a draw for travelers, too. The heart of the astrotourism boom is the Elqui Valley, a 100-mile strip of vineyards and orchards on the southern edge of the Atacama Desert, dotted with colonial towns and pisco distilleries. At least a half-dozen small observatories now cater to stargazers, while family-run hotels offer special domed and glass-ceilinged suites and in-room telescopes. But visit soon: Light pollution from new tourist infrastructure has already begun to dim Elqui’s magnificent skies.
WILL BE EMAILED. ECOFRIENDLY SPACE, RESPECT NATURE.

Our family stayed at the cottage for three nights and loved it so much that we decided to extend our stay another night. We would live here if we could. The location is absolutely stunning and the cottage is tastefully built and decorated. Everyone we met in the community was welcoming and friendly, starting with Mrs. Arsenia, the housekeeper, who welcomed us and who lives down the road. We travelled with our two children (5 & 8 years old) and they had a fantastic time exploring the property and playing with the friendly dogs and cats. I would recommend arriving during the day since the dirt road is narrow and the driveway to the property is steep and difficult to navigate in the dark. This house is just like the description claims: a stunning property!
This place is adorable and the 5 of us really enjoyed our 3-day stay. There is a private room with a queen bed and bath and the loft has 4 twin beds with another bathroom on the first floor. We brought one twin bed downstairs for our single friend which was fine with her because she had privacy and was closer to the bathroom. Everyone had lovely views of the mountains and stars from their beds. Plenty of hot water with good pressure and the kitchen has all the pots/pans/plates you'll need but you should bring with you all food you want to cook (including cooking oil, salt and dish soap) since the small towns may not be open or have what you want to eat. The views are just lovely from the outside table and there were surprisingly very few bugs (and no mosquitos during our stay!), so we left the windows open at night for cool sleeping. The driveway is quite steep but we got up it just fine with our Hyundai Elantra. It's just about a 15 minute drive beyond an artist community and a 5 minute drive from the closest little town so you could conceivably bike to things but we were glad we drove since the road gets narrow and a little "rustic" the farther up valley you go (but totally driveable). There is no wifi nor cell connection (unless you go down the road a bit), so you really are getting away from it all. We would definitely recommend this place to our friends who want a pretty, quiet place to just relax for the weekend.
Thank you for your review. Regarding your comment, let me say that in Chile is relative that a "private home rental" provide sheets (I do), towels (I do), etc, as oppose to cabanas and hotels that are in the lodging business. Chileans when rent private homes they usually know they have to bring these things (soap, dish washer, toilet paper, etc, including sheets and towels!! Is the airbnb concept adapted to the Chilean way, just like when sushi arrived in this country they decided that it was better with cream cheese!!!. I think you have a point when it comes to foreign renters and I will add toilet paper and soap. I should point out that in the property description under amenities> most common > essentials, the box is not checked (soap, toilet paper, etc). There is usually salt and a coffee maker, I apologize if my care taker put the later away. I am sorry you could not make the oven lit but it works fine. I am glad you enjoy the property.
You are welcome anytime!!!
Veronica & her husband have a great property in an amazing location. It is a beautiful area and if you want a great time in the mountains, this is a good place to go.
