Wooden forest house between the trees and fields: barn with wood-burning stove renovated under architecture. Ideal for couples or individuals seeking peace and quiet but also appreciating the proximity of the cozy and creative Arnhem. Just a few minutes walk from the entrance to De Hoge Veluwe. In clear weather you see the Milky Way in the evening. Ties and foxes scramble around the house. A little further you will see deer, pigs and ravens. You're sharing the house with two cats.

The space
The well insulated home was completed in 2013. In addition to gas, the house is also heatable with a wood-cv stove. The house is located on a former military site that is being redeveloped into a 'cultural enclave' where artists and designers live and work. The area has a special history; the site was part of Fliegerhorst Deelen during WWII. In two years, the German Luftwaffe built over 900 buildings that spread out in the woods and on the heaths would form the largest military airport in occupied Europe. For camouflage, the buildings were disguised as farmhouses and barns and grouped in a number of fake villages. A few hundred meters behind my house, in the middle of a field, is a barn......or so it seems. The painted windows reveal that this is something else; an aircraft hangar in which a bomber was housed. In the area around my house, you come across many of these strange traces. In 2017, I made a hiking map on which all buildings and complexes of Fliegerhorst Deelen are marked. This map is waiting for you and you can use it to track down the remains of this special heritage, which has been the largest national monument in the Netherlands since 2007. Occasionally I organize in cooperation with defence a bicycle excursion along all building complexes (a considerable part of it is behind the fences of defence). Of course, you can come along if such an excursion coincides with your booking.

Cycling and hiking is great; the Dealer Forest, the Hoge Veluwe (with the Kröller-Müller Museum) and the Veluwezoom National Park are all around the corner. Arnhem can be reached by bike and on foot via the beautiful parks Sonsbeek, Warnsborn and Zijpendaal. City bus 9 (every half hour) takes you from the gate of the site in 16 minutes to the beautiful station that UN Studio has designed. From here you can go to Düsseldorf and the Ruhr area for a day with the stop train for a good price. Nearby is a bakery but the nearest supermarket is about 4 kilometers away.
