Interaction with Guests
I love the city and am happy to provide suggestions or even grab a glass of wine with guests!
Sutter Street is a breath of fresh air after the downtown bustle. Actually everything quiets down North of Post Street. I like to tour the infamous Polk Street at all times of day, with its trendy bars, oyster depots, laid back cafes & bakeries and odd mom & pop shops. Before you know it you've walked up to the Marina! PS: Polk Street is one of the only flat streets crossing the North of the city...
I love to explore the city from its limitless hills and angles. Walking up Hyde Street to Alice Marble Tennis ground gives a breathtaking panorama of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
A few blocks into the city on Post Street is the city's high fashion quarter, with its Nespresso what else'ness.
On Stockton and Sutter is the entrance to the humungous China Town, with its quaint bakeries, restaurants and massage parlors
The Studio has a walk score of 98 a.k.a "a walker's paradise" and a Transit score of 100! Woot wooot. But don't get carried away, while the studio isn't set on a hill, you'd still want to explore the neighboring heights to get peaks of the priceless views, e.g. from the Top of the Mark (10 minute walk)!
I recommend downloading the free app Rover for public transportation in the city!
Van Ness is really one of SF's arteries (3 blocks west of the studio), with frequent buses to the trendy Mission district or the Marina & Pier 39 (bus 47). Other buses nearby take you to Union Square (2 & 3) Japan Town (38), Chinatown (61)...
Other Things to Note
The apartment is newly refurbished with wooden flooring, black tile counter tops, a new firm queen sized mattress and new kitchen appliances.
The apartment was light and airy and well located as described. However as someone else wrote, it is very basic. No TV, no fan (it was very hot in San Fran) and a very saggy bed held together with gaffer tape underneath with flat old pillows, which were so uncomfortable to sleep on, that my first outing was to Macys to buy a cheap pillow. We stayed 5 nights and were provided with one towel, no hand towels or face washers. It is a pity as it would not cost much to make the guest feel quite comfortable. Justin is sub-letting the place on airbn so you just use his toiletries. He is around if you need him and was very pleasant to deal with.
Thank you Cathy, always appreciate having guests from out of town.
Regarding towels, there's always a fresh pile in the guest closet. (I wasn't aware that there were two guests so had only left one in the basket on the living room table.)
Re toiletries, the full bottles of shampoo / body lotion and unwrapped soap bars are actually not 'mine' but samples that I leave for the guests.
I try to make each stay feel personal and homely - I certainly hope you enjoyed the wine bottle / flowers / chocolates / cucumber water as these are little ways I try to make my guests feel at home.
This is the first time that I hear that the bed is saggy and pillows are old! They're all new (less than a year old), and the Queen mattress is "firm".
Finally just to clear things up I'm surprised that this review is negative given that Cathy lost my apartment keys on the first day, which got me in trouble with my building manager...
I certainly tried to make your stay a special one!
Stayed in Justin's accommodation for 4 nights and just loved the location. It was our first time in SF so we were initially not familiar with the city but we soon realised that the accommodation was very convenient and near downtown and chinatown, etc. We walked alot and even walked to Lombard St and Fisherman's Wharf and to Top of the Mark. It was just walkable to anywhere (if you are ok with climbing hills).
Justin was very responsive and helpful throughout our stay. He has everything you need - iron, fridge, cooking utensils, etc. I loved the old school lift in the apartment! Haven't seen one in my life so it was a novelty experience for me. Justin was very nice and left us a bar of gluten-free chocolate to welcome us, pie (which I gobbled up when I arrived because I was so hungry), kale, blueberries and strawberries which we used to make juice, eggs for brekkie and some juices. He didn't need to provide all these but he did and we thought that was really thoughtful of him!
If you visit SF, I would highly recommend Justin's place. It's just nice for a couple or two best friends! Nice and quiet place and occasionally you will hear neighbours singing and playing the guitar in the late afternoon which was entertaining for us. Thanks, Justin!
Great apartment, great location! Justin was super easy to work with.
Justin's studio was in a transitional neighborhood, but there were plenty of awesome things (Nob Hill Grill, Polk Street, Trader Joe's) to outweigh the sketchy (flies, trash, pan handlers). Justin's apartment was fitted out with everything we needed in the kitchen and the bathroom.
Justin's place was great! It's on the back side of the building overlooking the back yard so there is no street noise. In fact, the windows were open all night and I never heard a peep. The building has an elevator if you're worn out from the SF hills, but it's only three floors up. The apartment has the basics. If you need more than that, then you probably aren't getting out enough to enjoy the city. Check-in and check-out was smooth and simple. Transportation is easy. Buses, Muni, Bart are convenient and there are plenty of cabs if you prefer.
Location is great. Lots of small shops and restaurants nearby and Union Square is in a waling distance.
I think Justin is renting this flat so nothing on the wall while ivy in the court yard is charming. A sofa and bedside light would increase the guests' comfort.
It seems it is a common problem of many US apartments but this building's washer and dryer in the condo's basement are not well maintained which discouraged me to use it, unfortunately.
