She gave us some great insight towards fun restaurants and places to see while in Newport. great location!
The host was fabulous! She made us feel very welcome when we first met with her. She showed us everything we needed to know about the rental and if we needed anything she was a phone call away.
Our stay in Newport was fabulous and the apartment was a convenient 15 to 20 minute walk from the downtown and the restaurants and entertainment. It was great for the 4 of us. We cooked our breakfasts in what reminded me of a quirky cottage kitchen. Then, as it was cooler and overcast we ate in the formal Victorian style dining room!! Reminiscent of a more leisurely, elegant lifestyle and a dramatic contrast from the Volvo Ocean sailing race we were there to watch!!.
The antiques and knick-knacks everywhere were fascinating, Jan has gone to great detail to decorate this unique space. The apartment is in a beautiful, huge old house, I wish there had been the time to learn the history of it. It needs some restoration, but as there was work being done on other sections of it while we were there (which did not impact us at all) I assume this is in process.
It was an action packed weekend and this was a comfortable and restful place to stay.
We stayed in Jan's apartment for 2 nights in mid-May. The apartment is very well-located, clean, and roomy. Jan is a wonderful host -- extremely accommodating and responsive, and also provided us with great recommendations for restaurants (we especially loved the Corner Café for breakfast). We found the apartment to be charming, but tired. The neighborhood is beautiful, but this building stood out as needing some work (eg, peeling paint). Inside, we found the bathroom to be dated (80s?) with a rickety toilet, a persistent musty odor (probably unavoidable in a vintage building like this), and the linens/towels a little beat. We settled in and enjoyed our time, but with some updates this place would be a slam dunk.
We had a fantastic time in Newport for a girls' weekend to celebrate our college reunion. Jan was very helpful and her condo had everything that we needed. Her restaurant suggestions were great. She takes pride in her place!
About the Host, Jan
I am a native New Yorker. I purchased my place in 2004 as a weekend retreat; I had visited Newport several times with family and friends over the years and fell in love with this lovely seaside community. Since I am a city girl I loved the in town location of the property and proximity to the restaurants, shops, nightlife, the wharfs, the beach, the mansions and the beach as well. Yet, the location provided me with the ability to retreat from the activity in minutes and find complete relaxation on a quiet residential street. I was able to create a beautiful space where I could put my feet up and am hoping that my guests will be inspired to do the same. Newport is for families as well as couples and singles. My association with airbnb began in December 2013. As your host I will do everything I can to make you comfortable and act as your concierge if you like, providing you with dining recommendations, suggestions on beaches large and hidden away, day trips to nearby towns as well as to the larger cities of Providence and Boston and ways to keep the kids happily occupied. If you love music, as I do, I hope you will attend the Newport Jazz Festival, the Folk Festival or other music festivals and gigs around town throughout the year. Enjoy a comedy show, a boat race or take a boat out yourself. I welcome you to my home which I hope you will make your own during your stay. Imagine!
