Interaction with Guests
We are not normally around when you arrive or leave, however can be reached on email.
This is a peaceful town, with a medieval origin and Dartmoor National park streams running through it. Go feed the ducks or sit in the 'Singing Kettle' cafe or 'The Seed' cafe/health food shop, to get a local taste of the place. Or walk onto the national park through the woods, or a stroll to Buckfast Abbey and to Hembury woods and River Dart swimming spots.
For children there is also a local Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary as well as a steam train ride along the River Dart to Totnes. At sunset you can view bats in motion near the pre-historical caves or arrange a daytime guided tour to Joint Mitnor Cave (containing unfossilised remains of bison, hippopotamus, hyaena, elephant and others).
A short drive to Dartmoor Natural Park's many beauty spots and walks (maps and guide books for walks available) as well as beautiful beaches.
Only 15 minutes drive to Totnes, famous funky alternative and historical town (catch the weekend market), 25 minutes to the cities of Exeter or Plymouth.
Bus 88 from Exeter, Totnes and Newton Abbot stops near the house. Nearest train stations are in Totnes or N.Abbot, 15 min. away, however it's best to arrive here by car to be able to explore the moorland and beaches freely. Car rental from train stations (Totnes or Newton Abbot, Devon) are a good option.
Other Things to Note
There is a wood for the wood burners at the end of the garden.
Do not worry if you see my elderly neighbours walking to their back door behind the house, as this is a shared path.
Please do not smoke in the house, or near the doors.
No noise outdoors after 11pm (not suitable for parties).
Central Heating, wifi and normal number UK landline calls (for up to 1 hour each call) are free and included in the price.
I am allergic to cats - please don't bring anything into the house that has cat hair on it (such as a blanket etc.).
Deposit may be used to cover breakage or excessive bills - phone or electricity (i.e. yoga studio heaters left on).
Sho was a superb host. She met us at the house and gave us a guided tour, and generously invited us to use produce from her garden.
The house itself is exactly as described on her posting - it is well maintained, spotlessly clean and had plentiful bedding, towels etc.; the kitchen has everything one could want and the house has a library worth of books and DVDs to entertain.
Finally, Sho has an excellent collection of guides and walks for the local areas - if you haven't done any planning before you arrive, you'll have all the resources you need in the house.
Location is also perfect, being on the edge of Dartmoor, but a short drive from the towns and beaches of the South Hams.
We would happily stay again!
The house is not fit for 8 pax. It was too crowded. 4 adults should be comfortable for the size of the sitting room and kitchen. The host has oversold the house and the facility.
We found the house to be very comfortable and was in easy reach of countryside and a short drive to fabulous beaches. We didn't meet our host but communication was clear and full. The house felt well loved. We had a wonderful time in Devon.
We stayed 4 days
The description of the house and its neighbourhood was accurate.
The house is spacious and very well equipped with every possible item that one would want to find. Tastefully furnished, nice garden, and view. Definitely will book the house again this year.
Staying in Shoshana's lovely house was an absolute joy. Buckfastleigh is a lively, quaint South Devon town with plenty to do and see nearby. Our Country House accommodation was unlike my previous Airbnb experiences, in that this one really felt like someone had invited you in to their home, which thoroughly enriched our weekend. There's plenty of space for everyone and a particular highlight was sitting in the lovely garden enjoy the warm May evenings with Dinner. The place has a nice, laid back vibe. Very relaxing.
We had a wonderful holiday staying at Sho's. The house is lovely and felt like a second home, nicely decorated and cosy. The 3 bedrooms were very comfortable and the yoga studio in the garden is a lovely extra space for early morning risers to stretch and have some quiet. Altogether a very nice place to stay and great things to do all around - walks in Hembury woods, or Dartmoor, to the beach for a picnic or to Totnes market.
We were a group of two families with young kids (toddlers). We had an amazing time in the house, felt like home away from home.
3 decent sized bedrooms with enough bedding stuff to make you feel cozy.
Thanks Sho, there was almost everything we needed on our arrival and we didn't have to go searching for groceries immediately.
Good collection of DVDs and indoor games.
It is a very nice location just 3 mins from the South Devon Rail station.
We would definitely recommend this place to any friends who would visit dartmoor national park area.

About the Host, Shoshana
After years of living in Asia I wanted to live close to nature and settled in a small Devon countryside town in UK, where I live with my daughter. I help people build healthier and more caring lives through my business, Karuna Detox, a health fast detox retreat, where I teach yoga, meditation, healthy lifestyle and nutrition.
I enjoy people and places that have heart and are relaxed and real. Peaceful, beautiful, artistic people and places inspire me.
