About this listing
Our beautiful 150 yr old Javanese teak house, Villa Melah ,with a private infinity pool overlooks lush tropical jungle and the Petanu River. Just 10 minutes drive to central Ubud, great restaurants, galleries & spas. Comfortably houses 2 - 6 guests.
Here you can experience the magic of Bali from the comfort and privacy of your own antique Javanese teak house.
Entrance to the 150 year old house is from steps at the side which lead up onto the long verandah and through large double doors. The verandah is perfect for lounging and watching the rich bird-life including Java kingfishers, coucals and cranes. A monkey may occasionally pay a visit.
The rustic main house has a spacious loft-like feel with massive carved pillars and a stunning ornate ceiling centre-piece. There is
a king-size bed with a dressing area behind carved panels. There is a dining table seating 6.There are sofas and seating areas, a simple kitchenette along the back wall with a small burner electric hob and a fridge. Furnishings are a mixture of antique and reproduction art deco colonial style and the glazed floor tiles are hand-made Dutch colonial style from Java. The semi - outdoor bathroom has a copper basin set in an antique door and a brass rain shower. We never felt the need to install a bath tub as we had the pool.
There is a flat screen TV with cable channels, an
iPod dock and a DVD player.
Downstairs are a further 3 bedrooms with single beds which our children used - ideal for friends or larger families. Two have ceiling fans , one has an air-conditioner- there is space for extra single beds.A small bathroom with a shower and toilet is shared by these rooms. Sliding glass doors open directly onto the pool terrace. There is no pool fencing so these rooms are not suitable for young children. The infinity edge pool has beautiful views and is sterilised by silver ionisation, not harsh chemicals.
There is a large open-sided pavilion in the garden which can be used for relaxing , meditation or yoga.
Interaction with Guests
Our lovely staff who also look after the other villas are mostly from the local village. They will prepare your breakfast and bring it to the house at your requested time and clean the house daily. The rest of the day you will be undisturbed unless you need something . We can be contacted on the house phone until 11pm. Our friendly security man Ketut is on duty from 11pm to 7am .Meals can be prepared by our on-site chef ( charged as per the villa menu .)
Melayang is a traditional Balinese Village where you can stroll down the street and see the beautful family compounds- you will probably be invited in to visit by one of the families, and if you happen to be staying when there is a temple ceremony you will be invited to attend.
You will experience age old farming methods and we can show you walks in the rice fields to see planting or threshing, ducks and cows. There is also a path down to the river where you can swim or just sit by the natural springs.
Just 10 minutes away is Ubud centre, home to art museums, galleries, restaurants and cafes. In the neighbouring villages you can watch the island’s most accomplished painters, stonemasons, woodcarvers, mask makers and silversmiths at work. The market is open every day selling handicrafts, garments, spices and foods, and Ubud even has its own sacred Monkey Forest. Ubud is the seat of the Sukawati Royal Family; the palace is centrally located and open to the public. There are many cultural performances staged here, in particular the famous Kecak dance, the fire dance, the monkey dance and the Legong dance.
We can arrange yoga, meditation, spa treatments and cooking classes either in Ubud or in-house, as well as visits to healers. For the adventurous we can arrange trekking, cycling and white water rafting.
We can provide a pick-up from the airport for USD40 and our car driver can be used for day tours, and sightseeing Ubud for very reasonable rates . Hourly rate in the local area rp 80,000 per car. If you have your own transport we have secure undercover parking. There is a free shuttle to and from Ubud 3 times daily
Other Things to Note
As in all Balinese houses, daily offerings are made. Every morning our local priest presents flower petal and incense offerings inside every building and at the various house temple shrines within the garden.
The Petanu River is considered sacred by the Balinese and a special temple for the spirits of the river is situated on the slope below the house. Particularly elaborate and beautiful offerings are presented during the full moon period. Many sites in Melayang are of great spiritual and archaeological significance. An ancient civilization existed here more than 2,000 years ago. Two stone sarcophagi were unearthed in the village which are estimated to be 2,500 years old and are believed to have contained the bodies of local kings. They can be viewed at the Archaeological Museum in Pejeng.

From Dec 01, 2015 - Feb 28, 2016 the minimum stay is 3 nights.
A wonderful villa into the forest of Bali.
Staff very kind and professional.
Breakfast really good also dinner.
Rooms clean and comfortable!!!
Ann's accommodation is nice but not worth the $500AUD that we payed. We got charged $50 each person past the original base price shown. We even got charged $50 for our 18month old son. Who didn't even get a breakfast each morning. The bed set up is also very confusing. By the looks of the photos down stairs has at least one double bed where another couple can stay. Theres actually 3 separate bedrooms all with singles. Each of these bedroom was so musty and un inviting. I feel very disappointed for our friends who we travelled with having to sleep down there.
I have stayed in Ubud before and thought it would be nice to stay out of town a little bit not realising how inconvenient it is. There is a shuttle service which we got charged for to use. You also need a mobile phone to be able to call the driver once in town. The drive in is at least 10 minutes close to 15 minutes away from the villa so nothing is walkable. Theres also no shops around the villa which makes it very inconvenient.
The villa is in a remote and peaceful location but there is much nicer accommodation closer to town which is better value for money.
I wish I could write a more positive review because the location is beautiful and I love Ubud but I just dont think its worth $500 a night for 4 adults, 2 of which having to sleep in separate beds.
Dear Lani , we are sorry you were dissatisfied with your stay. We describe our pricing , location and facilities in detail so that guests are sure to know all about the property before they book. It is disappointing you make it sound as if you were misled and overcharged. You checked with me about the pricing which is clearly stated $50 for each person over and above the first 2 . We do not charge for children under 2- at no time did you mention you were travelling with a toddler - you just entered 5 guests into the airbnb booking which we have no control over. Regarding the breakfasts, our guests are given a breakfast menu slip to complete in the evening to order for the next day. You can order continental , full or Asian breakfast and the quantities required. If there was no food for your child it is because you did not order it . We have lovely staff on hand to assist guests- you only needed to mention if there was a problem . It is clearly stated we are 10 minutes from Ubud Centre . We provide a free shuttle to and from Ubud 3 times a day at fixed times . You were only charged for use of the car when it was outside of the usual shuttle times. ( might I add the charge per trip was AUD 4.80 ) It is clearly stated that there is only one king bed and the other rooms have single beds. There is no photo of a double bed downstairs. If you had just asked the staff they would have been pleased to put 2 single beds together in one room.We strive to give our guests the best experience during their stay and would encourage people if they have any doubts or questions to please just check with us before booking.
Amazing villa, with great views from the infinity pool right into the jungle. The villa is located around 15 min outside of Ubud. With a scooter an easy ride. The staff was very helpful and tried to solve all the problems right at hand. wifi was initially not working but the staff tried to get it up and running again the moment we noted it. Overall a great place to stay!
This really was such a beautiful place, the villa was amazing, as was the view. Breakfast every morning in the villa was lovely overlooking the valley, such a massive mix of wildlife there too. We were lucky enough to have a group of monkeys play right next to the tree by the house, very close and hilarious to watch. I enjoyed going out with a torch at night to see what animals were about, it was fun.
My advice would be, take binoculars to make the most of the view. It says in the book they're available from the office, sadly they weren't.
Take ear plugs, it's really nice hearing all the different wildlife but they've got a lot to say.
All the staff were lovely, I'd highly reccommend a guided trip down to the waterfall for a swim, it was one of the highlights of the trip for us. The young chap who took us down was great, and it really was breathtakingly beautiful.
The pool was a little chilly,as it's a bit cooler there and at this time of year the Sun doesn't sit on it for an extended period of time, so you have to be a bit brave to pop in! But again the view once your in makes up for that though really!
So in conclusion, I'd highly reccommend staying here, you won't be disappointed.
We had a wonderful time in Villa Melah. The experience is more like staying in a luxury boutique hotel than a usual Airbnb place - it's grouped with a few other villas (although the house feels very private and secluded) so there are staff on hand 24/7, and they're all lovely. Breakfast (fruit, coffee, eggs, banana pancakes, black rice pudding) was delicious and we had a few meals at the villa which were good and very reasonably priced. Trips into Ubud were easy to arrange. $15 massages on the balcony were bliss. There were hardly any mosquitos and the nightly visits from the big geckos and frogs were entertaining! The setting and the villa are both even more stunning than the pictures suggest. It was the perfect start to our honeymoon and I'd love to go back some day!
Все было очень хорошо.
Очень аутентичный второй этаж и в этом есть своя прелесть и романтика.
Персонал хороший и внимательный.
Wow! I am a frequent traveler, and this is the first time that a house-stay exceeded all of my expectations. The architecture, the furniture, and layout, the space, the staff, and the million dollar views! I can't count the number of times that my friends and I used the word "wow". This 3-story property is built into the side of a cliff embankment, offering unobstructed spectacular jaw dropping mother nature inspiring vistas.
The location is set away from the city center, but for good reason. The peace and serenity are calming. I suggest renting a scooter for only a few dollars a day and it will give you all the flexibility you need.
Hands down I would suggest this property to all my friends and family that are staying in the Ubud area.

About the Host, Ann
I fell in love with Bali on my first visit in 1975 and have never lost my fascination for the people , the culture and the landscape . I spend part of the year here and part with family in Adelaide ,Australia , keeping a half eye on 4 adult daughters who come and go. Time in Bali is for inspiration, enjoying interests in art ,Ayurveda , eco-architecture , permaculture , edible and healing Balinese plants and generally just relishing the culture and the wonderful people in our village. You are warmly invited to experience the magic of Bali whilst living in our lovely old Javanese teak house .
