House - Entire home/apt · Jalan Melayang, Ubud, Bali 08571, Indonesia

Our beautiful 150 yr old Javanese teak house, Villa Melah ,with a private infinity pool overlooks lush tropical jungle and the Petanu River. Just 10 minutes drive to central Ubud, great restaurants, galleries & spas. Comfortably houses 2 - 6 guests.

The Space

Since 2005 we have had the privilege of creating 3 rental villas located in the traditional village of Melayang, 10 minutes drive from Ubud. They all have the same breathtaking views over lush tropical jungle to the sacred Petanu river below. We are now offering for rent what was previously our own home, located on the same grounds. Here you can experience the magic of Bali from the comfort and privacy of your own antique Javanese teak house.
Entrance to the 150 year old house is from steps at the side which lead up onto the long verandah and through large double doors. The verandah is perfect for lounging and watching the rich bird-life including Java kingfishers, coucals and cranes. A monkey may occasionally pay a visit.
The rustic main house has a spacious loft-like feel with massive carved pillars and a stunning ornate ceiling centre-piece. There is
a king-size bed with a dressing area behind carved panels. There is a dining table seating 6.There are sofas and seating areas, a simple kitchenette along the back wall with a small burner electric hob and a fridge. Furnishings are a mixture of antique and reproduction art deco colonial style and the glazed floor tiles are hand-made Dutch colonial style from Java. The semi - outdoor bathroom has a copper basin set in an antique door and a brass rain shower. We never felt the need to install a bath tub as we had the pool.
There is a flat screen TV with cable channels, an
iPod dock and a DVD player.
Downstairs are a further 3 bedrooms with single beds which our children used - ideal for friends or larger families. Two have ceiling fans , one has an air-conditioner- there is space for extra single beds.A small bathroom with a shower and toilet is shared by these rooms. Sliding glass doors open directly onto the pool terrace. There is no pool fencing so these rooms are not suitable for young children. The infinity edge pool has beautiful views and is sterilised by silver ionisation, not harsh chemicals.

Guest Access

There is a large open-sided pavilion in the garden which can be used for relaxing , meditation or yoga.

Interaction with Guests

Our lovely staff who also look after the other villas are mostly from the local village. They will prepare your breakfast and bring it to the house at your requested time and clean the house daily. The rest of the day you will be undisturbed unless you need something . We can be contacted on the house phone until 11pm. Our friendly security man Ketut is on duty from 11pm to 7am .

The Neighborhood

Melayang is a traditional Balinese Village where you can stroll down the street and see the beautful family compounds- you will probably be invited in to visit by one of the families, and if you happen to be staying when there is a temple ceremony you will be invited to attend.
You will experience age old farming methods and we can show you walks in the rice fields to see planting or threshing, ducks and cows. There is also a path down to the river where you can swim or just sit by the natural springs.
Just 10 minutes away is Ubud centre, home to art museums, galleries, restaurants and cafes. In the neighbouring villages you can watch the island’s most accomplished painters, stonemasons, woodcarvers, mask makers and silversmiths at work. The market is open every day selling handicrafts, garments, spices and foods, and Ubud even has its own sacred Monkey Forest. Ubud is the seat of the Sukawati Royal Family; the palace is centrally located and open to the public. There are many cultural performances staged here, in particular the famous Kecak dance, the fire dance, the monkey dance and the Legong dance.
We can arrange yoga, meditation, spa treatments and cooking classes either in Ubud or in-house, as well as visits to healers. For the adventurous we can arrange trekking, cycling and white water rafting.

Getting around

We can provide a pick-up from the airport for USD35 and our driver can be used for day tours, sightseeing or just a drop off in Ubud for very reasonable rates . e.g one way to Ubud rp 50,000 per car. Hourly rate in the local area rp 80,000 per car. If you have your own transport we have secure undercover parking.

Other Things to Note

As in all Balinese houses, daily offerings are made. Every morning our local priest presents flower petal and incense offerings inside every building and at the various house temple shrines within the garden.

The Petanu River is considered sacred by the Balinese and a special temple for the spirits of the river is situated on the slope below the house. Particularly elaborate and beautiful offerings are presented during the full moon period. Many sites in Melayang are of great spiritual and archaeological significance. An ancient civilization existed here more than 2,000 years ago. Two stone sarcophagi were unearthed in the village which are estimated to be 2,500 years old and are believed to have contained the bodies of local kings. They can be viewed at the Archaeological Museum in Pejeng.

About
I fell in love with Bali on my first visit in 1975 and have never lost my fascination for the people , the culture and the landscape . I spend part of the year here and part with family in Adelaide ,Australia , keeping a half eye on 4 adult daughters who come and go. Time in Bali is for inspiration, enjoying interests in art ,Ayurveda , eco-architecture , permaculture , edible and healing Balinese plants and generally just relishing the culture and the wonderful people in our village. You are warmly invited to experience the magic of Bali whilst living in our lovely old Javanese teak house .
