Interaction with Guests
Just ask what, where, when, how to get things and to places, and we will gladly direct you because we know Oaxaca like the back of our hands - and we will be glad to speak Spanish with you if you wish to practice the language with us :)
The studio is part of a family house, but totally independent. During your stay you will get a good glimpse of what a Mexican family live, interact, act like :)
The house is located in the "Barrio de la Merced" (La Merced parish neighborhood), one of the oldest in the city. Although inside the old city perimeter, it's still a residential area where 3 to 5 generations of families have lived and known each other very well. Aside from the main central market, there is also a fresh produce and meat market, with excellent traditional dishes to eat right there (Mercado de la Merced), plus a farmers market on Fridays @ El Llano park (6 blocks away).
Bakery, a taco stand on the same block; take-out food, laundry, grocery stores, dairy products, dry-cleaning, gas station, bookstore, pharmacies, restaurants, bars, everything can be found just couple blocks from home!!!!
The house is on a main bus route (single urban bus ride= 6 pesos)
Taxis for in-the-city rides cost between 40 and 60 pesos.
Other Things to Note
The studio is part of a family dwelling, and therefore you should expect normal noise during regular hours, but it´s quiet (and dark) after 10:00 p.m.
No children/ No smoking/ No pets/ No overnight visitors
LIGHTS and FAN:
Turn them off when not in use and upon leaving, please. We can lend you a flashlight if you might arrive after 10 p.m. during the week (on the weekends the corridors might stay lighted past midnight); the house gets pretty dark once the whole household and medical offices are closed.
Do not leave your patio/stairs lights until late; your (downstairs) neighbors do not appreciate getting the light through their windows.
QUIET TIME: During the week: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
CORRIDORS: You are welcome to rest, read, have a beer, or just relax on our corridors couches and chairs, but avoid the use of the doctor offices' furniture and/or their bathroom on the other corridors (they are for their patients).
TRASH: Please drop your bags (trash and recyclables) beside the iron-gate. Drop your empty-rinsed PET ( polyethylene terephthalate) container in the woven cane basket placed for this purpose.
Please water the interior plant(s) twice per week (about 2 glasses of water will be fine). If you are not into plants don't worry, just let me know and I will take care of them :) -- I will water the ones on the patio two or three times per week while you are out, either early in the morning or in the evening.
Overnight VISITORS are not allowed.
FRESH TOWELS and SHEETS are provided once per week.
No washing machine available.
ROOM SERVICE is not provided, but we can lend you cleaning supplies (mop, bucket, detergent, etc.) if requested. Or, if you prefer, we can call a cleaning lady who charges 250 pesos for the service if asked 2 or 3 days in advance.
"Things" I can't go without: my family, a dog, plants, a place where I can return (home), and the freedom to live and travel on my own :)
Cosas sin las que no puedo vivir: mi familia, un perro, plantas, un lugar donde regresar (mi hogar), y la libertad de vivir y viajar sola :)
