The Space

Charming & Cozy Chestnut Cottage is designed for guest to enjoy a peaceful overnight stay in the spirit of Henry David Thoreau's experiment of 'Life in the Woods'.

Chestnut replicates the square footage of Thoreau's 10' x 15' Cabin. The cottage has a newly constructed interior. You will find a full size bed with freshly laundered linens and blankets, two bedside tables with drawers for storage, writing desk, vintage chair for reading, closet rod for clothing and a full length mirror.

Our hope is you will find Chestnut Cottage a great place to rest and enjoy the solace of the woods, with added modern conveniences of electricity, climate control, wireless internet and close proximity to Lynchburg and all it has to offer.

Access to your private indoor bath, shower, kitchen and living room is a 30 second outside walk to the lower level of the main house. You can come and go as you please, at any hour. Our property borders hundreds of acres of unspoiled nature!

Chestnut Cottage is located in the backyard of our 1.5 acre wooded property, 3 miles (5 minutes) from Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church. Within a 4-15 minute drive you have access to shopping, dining, foundational American history, bike and hike trails. 12 minutes from Lynchburg Regional Airport. There is plenty to do in Central, VA while visiting!

While we are only three miles from Liberty, we live on Candlers Mountain and the two lane road is not safe for walking or biking to campus. You will need to make arrangements for car transportation to travel back and forth from campus.

Our rates range from $39 - $49 a night.

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion."
~ Henry David Thoreau

  • The best host family ever! Love staying at this cottage!

  • Hi Lisa.
Wanting you to know how much we have been enjoying ourselves and
our stay. We have done 3 runs-one down in Lynchburg on the trail, on
the mountain yesterday and through LU campus today. We spent a lot of time
at Appomattox yesterday taking in the pretty countryside and Civil War
history. We walked up the mountain from the Snowplex to see the sunset last
eve. Drove out to Poplar Forrest today and then to Blue Ridge Parkway. Some
fog, snow and vistas. Then came back to LU. Saw a lot on campus -
    inside and out. Very impressive.
Also, your place here is wonderful. We love all parts if it - the cabin and
the main house. We have cooked dinners, relaxed by the great fire like
heater, slept well and enjoyed the ambience of it all with the woods around
us. And our thanks for the fresh strawberries, oj, muffins, Very grateful!

We definitely recommend your place because of the accommodations and
your kindness! And would surely return if the opportunity were to arise!!

    Blessings to you and Steve!

  • I love love loved staying at the tiny cottage! I stayed there during an intensive at liberty university. At first I was afraid I would be lonely without so many people around like at a hotel, but let me just say, the pace and quiet was a welcome reprieve! I plan to stay here during my next intensives as well! Thank you Lisa!

  • Amazing accommodation! While I did not get to meet Lisa and her husband since they were out of town, their daughter filled in as tour guide and welcoming presence during my stay for a Liberty intensive class. The cottage is very nice and such a comfortable bed. The living room/bathroom/kitchen is really a very short walk. It is a nice place that feels like a relaxing seclusion up on Candlers Mountain, yet is only minutes away from Liberty, restaurants, and the mall. Also I felt safe - seemed like a nice neighborhood and Lisa's husband has his state police car parked in front. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone staying in Lynchburg, whether for an intensive or just visiting the area. The ONE downside I would state is that it's in the woods... which means bugs do get in (and I'm not a bug person at all!) Just make sure to have shoes on, at least socks, when you're inside in case you need to kill a spider. But that did not detract from my stay, it was just something I wish I had thought about and realized before going in the bathroom the first morning there and seeing a spider next to the shower! Anyway, as I said other than that it was great and loved it and would probably stay there again! Such a refreshing place compared to hotels! I think I received a text from Lisa's daughter nearly everyday making sure everything was okay!

  • Great place ! I was doing a trip last minute to a workshop with over 10,000 attendees. Lisa and Steve were great hosts and I couldn't ask for a better experience. Definitely would recommend staying there!

  • My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Lisa's Tiny Cottage while visiting our daughter at college. The accommodations were the cleanest I have ever seen. The cottage was so quiet and peaceful and the bed so comfortable, I slept 10 1/2 hours the first night there. My husband especially liked the setup with a separate living area as he could get up very early and do his stretches, watch the news and go for a hike without waking me.
It was incredible to wake up to a beautiful forest scene rather than a parking lot full of cars. Lisa and her husband were very warm and welcoming. We will definitely book again at Lisa's cottage in Lynchburg and use Airbnb for future trips.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Lisa's little cabin in the woods. I got in late on our first night, so I did not get to meet her; regardless, we felt very well taken care of and loved the setting and the privacy of this beautiful place. We are so grateful for Steve and Lisa for opening up their little mountain treasure to us. Oh - and she provided us with breakfast goodies! What a treat! Nowhere else I have stayed has the host paid such attention to detail with such kindness and thought. Thank you, Lisa! We hope to stay with you again sometime! Maybe I will get to meet you then!

  • It is indeed a lovely cottage! The Altizers were so welcoming and were even there to greet me when I arrived. It was incredibly thoughtful of them and their coffee/tea and breakfast nibble spread was such a nice touch.

For those of you who may be concerned by the bedroom being away from the living area (as I was initially). I'm here to tell you that it was no big deal! The walkway is very short and well lit. And the cottage bedroom was actually one of the most restful places I've ever slept. Everything in the cottage and basement is so tasteful and quaint! You can't help but fall in love with it!

I'm sure you will enjoy your stay!

  • Lisa and Steve are perfect hosts. Everything in the cottage is SUPER clean, and all the furnishings add to the overall warmth. We were there during a very cold week with a lot of snow on the ground, but we were perfectly warm the entire time. They made sure the path was shoveled clear of snow. The bed is oh so comfortable, and the breakfast items are very thoughtful. We are definitely coming back!
