The space

Visiting Lynchburg, Virginia or Liberty University stay in our Charming & Cozy Chestnut Cottage! Designed for guest to enjoy a peaceful overnight stay in the spirit of Henry David Thoreau's experiment of 'Life in the Woods'.

Chestnut replicates the square footage of Thoreau's 10' x 15' Cabin. The cottage has a newly constructed interior. You will find a full-size bed with freshly laundered linens and blankets, two bedside tables with drawers for storage, writing desk, vintage chair for reading, closet rod for clothing and a full-length mirror.

Our hope is you will find Chestnut Cottage a great place to rest and enjoy the solace of the woods, with added modern conveniences of electricity, climate control, wireless internet and close proximity to Lynchburg and all it has to offer.

Access to your private indoor bath, shower, kitchen and living room is a 30-second outside walk to the lower level of the main house. You can come and go as you please, at any hour. Our property borders hundreds of acres of unspoiled nature!

Chestnut Cottage is located in the backyard of our 1.5-acre wooded property, 3 miles (5 minutes) from Lynchburg, Virginia, Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Within a 4-15 minute drive, you have access to shopping, dining, Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest; Historic Downtown Lynchburg, Virginia; Foundational American and Civil War History, Bike and Hike trails at Blackwater Creek Natural Area and Liberty Mountain. We are 12 minutes from Lynchburg Regional Airport. There is plenty to do in Central, VA while visiting!

While we are only three miles from Liberty University, we live on Candlers Mountain and the two-lane road is not safe for walking or biking to campus. You will need to make arrangements for car transportation to travel back and forth from campus.

Our rates range from $39 - $59 a night for the first guest (second guest: $10/night after the first guest). Plus a $25 cleaning fee per stay (Airbnb booking fees not included).

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion."
~ Henry David Thoreau
