Susan is a Charleston expert
Guests highlight Susan's warmth and her detailed Charleston recommendations, from historic walks to local dining.
Tucked into a wooded neighborhood just 10 minutes from downtown Charleston, this house is located next to a state historic site with walking trails. It is a serene retreat filled with light and surrounded by trees and the perfect place to explore Charleston, the beaches and plantations. Furnished with antiques, the guestroom captures the charm of Charleston. There is also a beautiful garden. My poodle Zephie will greet you and you may meet my boyfriend who sleeps here occasionally. The space
Throughout the house, large windows frame views of the surrounding trees and bring in light. A four-poster bed and pretty rug make the guestroom a charming place to rest and relax. Enjoy coffee and breakfast at the large kitchen island and chill out in the shady outdoor seating area. Take a five minute walk to the Charlestowne Landing historic site where pedestrian paths lead through gardens and wind along marshes and the Ashley River.
Guest access
Private bedroom with a private bathroom just down the hall. Minimal use of kitchen and kitchen island for morning tea and coffee and low-prep meals (microwave only; plates and silverware provided). There are stools for sitting at the kitchen island. Limited guest access for living room. Reserved for host between 6 and 9 pm. Dining room is reserved for host. Pretty outdoor seating area.
During your stay
As the author of two books about Charleston, I have lots of ideas to share about where to go and what to do. I can direct you to my favorite neighborhoods in the historic district, suggest the best plantations and house museums to visit, and make restaurant suggestions. A copy of my latest book, offering the history of Charleston's architecture, is available in the guest room if you want to study up. My sweet poodle greets guests with enthusiasm and loves to be petted.
Other things to note
The guestroom is equipped with an air-conditioning unit and portable heater so guests can adjust the temperature to their comfort level. Extra pillows and blankets are provided for comfortable sleeping. My standard poodle is very playful and friendly, so if guests are uncomfortable with dogs, they might want to look elsewhere. My boyfriend spends the night here one or two days a week. If a guest is uncomfortable with this, I can go to my boyfriend’s house instead.

Neighborhood highlights
My neighborhood, established in the 1950s, is named Charlestowne Estates because it is next to the Charlestowne Landing historic state park, where the original settlement of Charleston was established in the mid-17th century. My neighborhood is wrapped on two sides by the state park and is very quiet, ultra-safe, and charming. It is in the Charleston area called West Ashley because it is West of the Ashley River from Charleston. The peninsula of Charleston, where the historic district is located, is boundeby the Ashley River on the West Side and the Cooper River on the East Side. West Ashley is a fun, eclectic area with lots of restaurants, breweries, and shopping.

I’m happy to spend time with my guests or give them space
I am a writer and photographer passionate about historic architecture and beautiful old cities. I have written three books about Charleston. I love cooking, traveling, walking and cycling in the state park next to my house. Having a beautiful, comfortable home is one of the most important things to me. I love to share it with visitors from afar.
