aloha! This house is my pride and joy! I have created a beautiful writing space and love nest. Perfect for a writing/creative retreat or a couple looking for the spot to be in love in Hawaii.
It's the jungle part of the big island, so it's more for the adventurers, who want to hike, snorkel, see black sand beaches, etc..Merland (my house) is in a little subdivision called seaview, one hour south from Hilo, Hawaii.
It's a very large open space with a nook where the bedroom is. (private large bathroom, of course). Totally private, clean, quiet, peaceful, great vibe. I have DSL internet, a land line (mobile phone's don't work here), washer/ dryer, full cooking kitchen, queen size comfortable bed, luxury linens and turkish bath towels. Large beautiful bathtub (shower as well) that looks out with a bay window on the back yard.
Ohi trees, orchids, pinapple plants, papaya trees. There are two decks. Half an acre of landscaped land with beautiful wonderful smelling plants and flowers, young coco trees, bamboo, plumeria, lime trees, fig tree, young mango tree...night blooming jasmine that smells so great. Many windows to look out at the millions of stars at night from every angle of the house and to wake up with the birds singing and the sun. Or to listen to the rain.
So relaxing and good for the soul. It's near Volcano (which attracts millions of visitors a year), 4 minute drive to Kehena (black sand beach) only for the strong swimmers, so be careful! 4 minute drive to Kalani ( a yoga retreat, with spa services as well as meals.) 2 hours drive to Kona. There are no resorts in this area. I have poured my heart into this land and house, I'm looking for clean, kind, non-smoking (cigarettes) people that are looking to have a life-changing experience in one of the most beautiful and wild places in the island of Hawaii.
view my little home movie to tell you more!
The Merland house and its surrounding tropical gardens are much more beautiful than the pictures show. We loved our week-long stay there. Elizabeth has planted so many wonderful flowers and interesting plants - we never got tired at looking at them and at the cardinals, mynahs, and saffron finches that fly around. The house itself is clean, elegant, interesting, and beautifully decorated. We wanted a place that was somewhat secluded, and the Merland house worked out very well for us.
While there we visited the tide pools near Kapoho, Issac Hale Park, McKenzie Park (with a hidden lava tube - bring a flashlight), two different warm ponds, the "new" black sand beach near Kalapana, and Kalani Retreat Center (a good place to eat a buffet lunch or dinner or to just stop by the front office/store for some ice cream). If you're there on a Wednesday afternoon or evening, go to Uncle Robert's market at Kalaplana for a uniquely Hawaiian experience - lots of interesting food, music, and people. Pahoa is about 25 or so minutes away, and we had a delicious dinner at Kaleo's Bar and Grill. We also drove up to Volcano National Park (maybe an hour and a half or so away) and on to South Point, the southern-most place in the US. I recommend that you have a car when staying at the Merland house.
The kitchen is well equipped and the refrigerator is large. It would be nice to have a little larger dining table, but because the idea here is intimacy maybe the little round cafe table is just right. The bathroom is really amazing, with lots of travertine marble and a bathtub that seems to hang out into the outside greenery. The shower works very well.
The WiFi system was easy to connect to and never caused us any problems.
Elizabeth warned us ahead of time about the possibility of encountering mosquitos outside, but as it turned out, we never saw one mosquito. In fact there was an amazing lack of insects everywhere we went. Maybe it was just the time of year (mid-February).
We hope to be able to stay at the Merland house again.
This is a great house and Elizabeth is very helpful and accommodating. The walk to the beach is about 30 mins, but it's a wonderful walk. The surrounding area is also very interesting with plenty of adventure. Highly recommended.
The place is even more beautiful and peaceful than the pictures. The house was spotless, the bed very comfortable, and the bathtub luxurious. The neighborhood is very quiet. There are lots of windows to let plenty of sunlight in, but all the trees and plants provide privacy. The kitchen was equipped enough for us to cook many of our meals and dine on the lanai. Our favorite space was the lanai which was large with a comfortable bench. Easy to get lost daydreaming on that bench while watching the rain. The location is wonderfully tropical. The sounds of the jungle at night will amaze you. It is a magical corner of the island worth exploring all the nooks and crannies. Overall, we highly recommend it and would definitely come back again.
