A charming little Cottage in the garden of LaBou cottage that resembles a birdhouse. It features a full size bed, a ceiling fan, 12V lights, a closet and a door with a privacy lock. A unique open-air design built by a swiss artist.
La Bou is a truly unique Country Retreat in the wilderness of Dominica. This is no ordinary log cabin or bamboo hut. This unique 0.85 acre retreat was hand-built by a Swiss artist and his wife over a period of two years in a stunning location. The main house is for rent to parties of 2 or more. See our other listing. The guest room in the garden is the Bird House Cottage described here.
Guests have access to their cottage and the entire gardens, including the BBQ area with fire place, the shower and the toilet of the main house and of course, they also have access to the surrounding area and all that is has to offer.
Interaction with Guests
We can interact with our guests as little or as much as they would like. We can let them enjoy themselves alone or spend all day with them showing them the sights and sounds of Dominica.
The unique thing about our neighborhood is the nature. All you hear and see is nature. You will fall asleep and wake up to bird song and other natural sounds. Typical sounds here include sounds made by tree frogs, birds and certain insects. We also sometimes hear sounds being made by the local domestic animals in the valley, such as roosters, pigs, goats and cows. Hearing dogs barking is also not uncommon.
As far as getting around is concerned, renting a small 4x4 Jeep is your best option. If you choose not to rent a car, you can still get around quite well if you are not afraid of a little walking. Local buses run to all areas of the island and are inexpensive. The nearest bus stop is about a 10 minute hike down the hill in the fishing village of Soufriere. Hitchhiking is also still a viable option here since the local population is very friendly and always eager to help out visitors. Please make sure you greet all people you meet with a big smile and a loud "Good Morning". They will answer you with a loud "OK" or a thumbs up sign. It is considered "rude" to not greet everyone you pass along the road.
Other Things to Note
La Bou is located between sections 1 and 2 of the National Trail and right behind the famous Soufriere Sulphur Springs. Soothing hot baths can be enjoyed there day and night. The springs are about a 10 minute walk down the road. La Bou gets its water from the rain, so there is no hot water in any of the buildings. Electricity is provided by a battery bank charged by solar panels. 12V and 110V is available throughout. There is no Internet or TV available at La Bou. Guests can get access to the Internet and phone line at our support house 1km away.
We are living in the middle of nature here, so do expect to see lots of wildlife, including but not limited to insects, birds, lizards, etc. Also let us know if you are allergic to dogs, or anything of that nature, as your allergies might act up here in the middle of the jungle.
Make sure you bring enough of your prescription medication if you need any. It may not be readily available here.
Please note: We do keep at least one dog at the retreat at all times. His name is Oro and he was raised there.
As far as house rules are concerned, we just want you to behave as you would in your own home. Smoking is allowed, but please don't smoke in the bed.
This place is magnific! Very relaxing, elegantly designed and surrounded by stunning nature. The hosts are very kind and explained us thoroughly how to best enjoy our time in Dominica!
Having a car at disposal, Soufriere is a very good location for the stay in Dominica: the hiking tracks of the area are easily reachable and, when you go back at night, you can always have a quick swim in the sources or at the beach and eat good local food!
This is a place I totally recommend!
Our recent stay at the Birdhouse Cottage near Soufriere in Dominica was marvelous - we only wish we could have stayed longer! The architectural detail of the cottage and main building is impressive and facility is completely off-(website hidden) and dining is accomplished in a beautiful covered outdoor shelter with gas-burner and fireplace. For a unique and peaceful stay in the mountains and small farms of in the South of Dominica this is a wonderful choice.
Hosts Arent and Mabel were welcoming, generous and also offered a degree of privacy that was conducive to such a romantic hideaway. Loved it!
Arent and Maple were welcoming and nice hosts. We stayed two nights in the birdhouse which was a bit shabby but otherwise pleasant experience to sleep like in the jungle. The place was surrounded by the mountains, which was great. The main house and the other parts of the place were uniquely decorated. With own car it is much more easier to get there. Would recommended this place!
The reservation was canceled 56 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
He and his partner were expecting us and waiting to show us around. They both made us feel welcome and comfortable. Their place was much more than advertised and we would highly recommend it to anyone interested in visiting Dominica.
Every morning we walked the property to gather fresh fruit for our breakfast smoothie and every night we grilled local veggies and fish on the charcoal grill under the stars. This property is an icon of sustainability in every way. If it was for sale I would buy it in a heart beat.
La Bou... La Bou... La Bou...
I write the words as if calling forth a mythical abode like Shambala, far away from the worries and cares imagined by the masses...
This is paradise. There is no other way to describe it. Fruits of all kinds grow without a care in the world all along the well-manicured grounds, free for the picking. The cottage itself is completely unique, and little architectural masterpiece, blending seamlessly with nature! I was constantly serenaded by the sounds of nature... Not at all loud or making it difficult to sleep but on the contrary deeply soothing and far better than the honks and sirens we're probably all used to.
Arent and Mable are reflections of their environment... Calm. Serene. Peaceful hosts who live a life you might not only be able to dream about but can actually live yourself for a while during your stay here.
The nearby villages of Soufriere and Scott's Head should rank amongst the very very top places to see before you die. They are truly hidden gems and great examples of how life can be when people live close together and in community (and along the rim of an ancient crater that has half -way eroded into the sea, which bubbles with hot springs for people to enjoy all surrounded by the most lush tropical paradise mountains and valleys I have ever seen)
It was truly a pleasure to have you stay with us at La Bou! Happy to hear that you enjoyed the experience and our property as much as we do! Hopefully your review will inspire others to visit and experience our paradise. Hope to see you again soon, but meanwhile enjoy the journey, wherever the road takes you!

Pleased to meet you! My name is Arent and my partner's name is Mabel. Together we have been doing business on Dominica for the last 1.5 years. We are your hosts. I was born in the Netherlands, but have spent the last 37 years in the Caribbean, namely on St. Maarten, where I worked as a Hotel and Restaurant manager. Mabel has spend the last 35 years in banking in Florida.
We look forward to welcoming you to our very special slice of paradise, where Mother Nature still rules the roost.
