The Space

Tranquil Jungle Setting, surrounded by nature...
Only 4 rooms - no more than 8 people to share the public space.

Immerse yourself in nature in this tranquil, jungle hide-away, just a 3 minute walk to a breathtaking beach, Playa Negra. Enjoy peace and quiet, yet have access with a 5 minute walk, to the charming town of Puerto Viejo, - cute shops, great restaurants and (email hidden)ly night life.

Hidden Jungle Beach House: where nature lovers can socialize around the kitchen table or enjoy solitude in a quiet spot on a hammock.
You fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake to the chattering of a million tropical birds.

Hidden Jungle Beach House is a typical Caribbean style wooden house with three levels. The kitchen is on the first floor. The bedrooms are on the second. And the third floor is my room, I'm the owner, Lisa, and I live here, too.

The first floor kitchen is spacious and open, with jungle all around. The grocery store is only a short jaunt away so you can buy what you need and cook it here. The shared bathroom with a hot shower is on the first floor.

The second floor of Hidden Jungle Beach House has four bedrooms and a living room with cable TV. It also has a shared bathroom with a sink and a toilet. The bedrooms are simple and small. Three bedrooms have double beds and one has a single. Each room has a place to hang your clothes, shelves, desk or table and chair, mosquito nets and a fan, along with clean sheets and towels.

We are a simple place: The windows have screens but we use mosquito nets, too; no A/C just fans and jungle breezes. We love animals. We have two German shepherds (and a cat) to guard the house and entertain the guests. Smoking cigarettes is allowed only outdoors in the yard.

Hidden Jungle Beach House is truly Puerto Viejo’s hidden treasure. You’ll love it’s relaxed and friendly vibes. You’ll sleep cozy and comfortable in the arms of mother nature. You’ll wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys, cute little geckos and a million different kinds of colorful birds.

Helpful suggestions on where to go and what to do are provided by your delightful host, me! I have lived on Costa Rica’s Caribbean for almost 7 years and can give you lots of good advice.

If you are looking for a simple, economical place to stay in the quiet tranquility of the jungle but close to all the activity, Hidden Jungle Beach House is the place for you.

Interaction with Guests

I am Lisa, the owner, and I live here, too! I am most always around - accessible for questions or help.

I'm a writer with a website telling you all about my experiences living in Costa Rica for seven years. I'll give you all the details on your options to get here from the airport, along with photos and instructions. I can book your transportation and I also offer personal guide service. Once you have made your reservation, Airbnb will allow me to give you the link to my website.

When you arrive I give a little tour of the place, showing you where everything is. I am happy to give guidance or recommendations and help you find what you need.

The Neighborhood

Life in the jungle! Our closest neighbors are sloths, often seen in the trees just outside our windows. Stunning Blue Morpho butterflies and colorful hummingbirds flit by as you sit on the patio. The mornings are chirpy and bright with a million melodic bird songs. Afternoons are quiet and peaceful under the cool of the jungle canopy. And the evenings are exotic with the heady fragrance of jasmine, white ginger and ylang ylang and the curious calls of our nocturnal animal friends. This is truly the place to refresh the mind, nurture the soul and release the stress of everyday living.

Getting around

It is easy to get here. From the airport you can take a bus, a private shuttle, a rental car or you can even take a rafting trip! I'll give you all the details and book your transportation, if you like.

Once you are here you can access most everything on foot or by bike. The public bus system works well and there are taxis at your disposal.

Other Things to Note

IF YOU HAVE A CAR: If you are coming by car, please let me know at the time you make your reservation. Parking is limited so I have to make sure there is space for you. Thanks!
DOGS: We have two German Shepherd guard dogs. They are very sweet. They do not bite. But they do bark to protect the property from intruders. When you first arrive they will not know whether or not you are an intruder and they will bark. Before you get here I will ask for your arrival time. When you get here I will be here waiting and I will walk out to greet you and introduce the dogs. Then they will know you and accept you as part of the family for the time you are here. No problem. When you leave and come back, they may bark until they see who you are but just talk to them and they will recognize you. No worries. Most all of my guest love our dogs and the dogs love the guests as well.

  • This place was really cool. It is very private and you can hear the waves crashing on the beach while you lay in bed at night. It is maybe a 10 minute walk to the heart of Puerto Viejo and less than 5 minutes to Playa Negra. Although the rooms have been "Mosquito proofed" you will probably still want to sleep in bug spray because they still get in.
The rooms are small but nice. The whole place is well decorated. The bathrooms offer very little privacy. You can see someones head if they are sitting on the toilet upstairs. This didn't bother me, but I know it would be an issue for a lot of people so I thought I should note it.
Parking is a pain if there is more than one person staying there with a car. It wasn't easy getting in and out of the gated property, especially at night since I had to back in while avoiding plants, construction piles and the other vehicle. I ended up leaving my car on the other side of the gate since it was such a hassle. Thankfully it didn't get broken into (which apparently is a problem).
Lisa is very strict with her rules. She can come off a bit smug while going through the ropes. As a 30+ year old frequent traveller I thought it was a bit over the top. Almost to the point of unwelcoming. I understand though as I'm sure she's had a couple unpleasant guests.
All in all the place is really cool, but I would probably find something more to my liking next time I visit Puerto Viejo.

    Response from Lisa:

Thank you for the review, Kacie. My place is not for everyone. There are many places to stay, suited for all different kinds of people. I do my best and many people really enjoy my place.

I would like to address each issue you mentioned.

The rooms are mosquito proof but if you leave the door open they can still get in. I always offer to put (email hidden) over the bed. Some people like that and some prefer not to use it.

The upstairs bathroom is small and the door does not extend all the way to the floor. You can see people's FEET not their head. There is a curtain at the top to give a bit more privacy. The bathroom downstairs is larger and has a normal door with complete privacy.

Kacie was here during some construction and unfortunately it caused some congestion in the parking area. The situation has improved. And there has never been a car break in on my property inside the gate or outside the gate.

As for my rules. You can see them listed here on the site. I am strict with my rule about locking the doors and closing your windows when you leave the property. I have never had a break in but I am cautious to keep it that way. For someone who thinks it is strict to be asked to keep things locked when you leave, better you travel to a place where there are no thieves. That would eliminate any developing country in the world.

Kacie I am very sorry you got the impression that I was acting "smug." I have never been called that in my life - never. But you know, I am only human. I do my best but not everybody is going to like me. That's just the way it is.

  • Lisas house was just perfect for my stay, a little oasis in the jungle and very close to the town. I wont forget the feeling in the morning waking up and listening to the ocean, monkeys and birds... I took spanish classes at spanish by the sea and stayed in the hidden jungle beach house which was a 10min walk. Coming back to her house was like having a little of a home. The house is very clean and so comfortable. You easily fall in live with the cat ant the dogs are just lovely. I had time to hang out and have my privat time, but had also a very good time with people that stayed there. Lisa was always nice and helpful and did everything to make my stay comfortable. Couldnt think of a better place to be in puerto viejo!

  • Lisa is a wonderful host. She has expert local knowledge and understands the needs of visitors in a uniquely empathetic way. Once you settle in to the clear, common-sense systems of the Beach House it will feel just like a home away from home. Lisa's background in interior design really shines through too, with a great color scheme and character-filled feel to the whole place. Would definitely stay again.

  • Excellent value: Lisa takes customer experience very seriously. She is extremely diligent and detailed in her approach to each guess. There is nothing laid back about her approach to your accommodation and experience. That said, she was not intrusive at all and allowed everyone staying at her place as much privacy as possible. My advice to guests is to not assume she will volunteer advice; you need to speak up if you need something. In turn, she will oblige. You get what you pay for, so don't expect large rooms (I was staying in the smallest room, a single), but that's typical of most accommodation in this price range. Very clean, very secure, very close to the beach, close to the town (5 minute walk?) but not so close that you cannot sleep. Next time I visit, I will probably splurge for something more private and spacious, but if you wish to spend under $100 US per night, this is the place to be in Puerto Viejo.

    Response from Lisa:

Thanks for the nice review, Michael. I do my best to be a good host. In the past I offered lots more suggestions and advice but it seems people prefer to ask me if they want something. So I do give my guests ample space to feel independent in my house. Yet I try to be available if needed. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.

  • I felt very comforatable, safe, and happy staying at Lisa's lovely jungle home. I loved greeting her friendly pets every night and I enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle animals. Thank you Lisa for being a great host. I will definitely be visiting Puerto Viejo again sometime in the future!

I’m Lisa Valencia, a writer and Costa Rica guide who has lived in Costa Rica’s Caribbean since 2007. I believe in following your dreams and living life to the absolute fullest. I believe in giving without regard to what you get. I try to find the balance between being in the moment and planning for the future. I work on keeping judgment in abeyance. And I am thankful, grateful and appreciative of almost every little thing in every moment of life. One of my greatest feats, since moving to Costa Rica has been that of learning to reinvent myself. In the USA I worked as a mural artist and an interior designer. I’ve continued my art work in Costa Rica, but only to a minor extent. To my own surprise my creativity took a turn to the literary, as I recounted my Costa Rica new life experiences to my friends. In September of 2009, I wrote a book about my first two years in Costa Rica, coming here as a woman alone. My book, “If She Can Do It, So Can I!” is available on my website as an AUDIO BOOK an EBOOK and the paperback version is available from Amazon. My love for literacy and language sparked another idea. I became certified to teach English as a second language and taught locally for a year. As my writing continued it stimulated more reinvention. Due to readers extensive inquiries about Costa Rica living, I developed a Guide Service and a Consultation Service for those interested in Costa Rica. Three years ago life brought another new way to share my Costa Rica experiences and to reinvent myself. I am the happy owner of a sweet little guest house in the jungle. Although I carry on my guiding and consultation, my realm of service has extended to providing lodging at Hidden Jungle Beach House. It seems things have come full circle. My book was written to inspire others to believe in themselves and follow their dreams. Now I can help those who dream of travel to Costa Rica by providing guidance and an economical place to start their own adventure.
