Beautiful, huge, and charming 1-bedroom villa in Penastanan, the most popular Ubud neighborhood for expats and visitors to stay. Penastanan is a 5 min motorbike or taxi ride away from the loud streets of central Ubud, nestled in idyllic and beautiful rice fields, also situated among the warmth of traditional Balinese people living nearby.
Private with lush green gardens, but only 6 minutes from the streets of Penestanan (and famous raw food bar and hangout, Alchemy).
NOTE, this is a PRIVATE villa, not shared with anyone. It is your own enclosed 1-bedroom oasis with living area, kitchen, huge lush garden, pond, lotus flowers, etc. Do note, however, the living area and kitchen are indoor-outdoor, like the majority of houses in Ubud. That means you have a roof over you, but no windows/screens when you sit at the kitchen table and sofa - it's like being on a terrace. There are bamboo 'curtains' that all houses have to pull down in rainy season, but I rarely use them. The bedroom IS totally enclosed. The bathroom is mostly enclosed, except the shower, which is open on the top so you can star-gaze!
Also NOTE: this house is not accessible directly by car. As with many villas in Ubud, you have to walk down 5 minutes on a foot/motorbike path only to get to the place (or you can ride your motorbike if you are very experienced at narrow paths!)
Beautiful hot-water outdoor shower and bath. Lotus pond, twice weekly cleaning and linen change included.
The villa is an 6 minute walk (or a 3 minute motorbike ride) from the famous raw food juice & restaurant Alchemy, Kue Bakery, 5 Elements Restaurant, Sari Organik, Wayan's Juice Bar, Round Bar, Brahma Kumaris Meditation center, and a few more spots. Penastanan is more like a small village/suburb of Ubud, close to a handful of lovely restaurants and shops, but still retaining very local Balinese culture. It is very safe and beautiful.
**Please note the MAP view of the house is inaccurate and I cannot manually change it. Because most places in Ubud to not have actual addresses, I cannot put down an address so the map just chooses a random place in Ubud! The map shows my location as a completely different neighborhood, FYI.
About the house:
1 bedroom villa with extremely large bedroom, Queen size bed, new mosquito netting, A/C, large ceiling fan, huge indoor/outdoor bathroom. Bathtub along with sink and toilet in the 'indoor' part and the beautiful outdoor shower complete with orchids and plants.
Full cleaning twice weekly by the owners (who are like family to me, and the sweetest people ever), complete with fresh flowers!
This place is surrounded by lush greenery, banana leaf, flowers, and a beautiful coy pond with incredible lotus flowers that spring up every night.
The living area and kitchen is indoor/outdoors like almost all Balinese homes. You can sit on a beautiful plush daybed/sofa or relax at the small table for eating meals or having tea. Kitchen with rice cooker, toaster oven, dishes, pots, pans. Note Balinese kitchens are very basic and so it only has a 2 oven gas stove, no oven.
The energy of this place is incredible, and the best part is that all the neighbors (Balinese and expats) are so helpful with anything you need. The neighbors, Mini and Made (Mini speaks English) live right nearby so they are like on-site security.
Wayan, the owner, comes every day to do offerings to the small house temple (all Balinese homes have small temples) and you are welcome to join him. If you want your privacy, you can let Wayan know a good time that works for you for him to come (usually he comes between 6 and 7 pm for about 25 minutes, but feel free to let him know what works best).
Yellow Flower Cafe is a walk on the path in the opposite direction from Alchemy, amazing food and tucked away in the rice fields.
No pool, but you can use the D'omah hotel pool & grounds a 5 minute walk away for $4 per person. Also some really luxurious pools for a small fee to use in Ubud that are open to the public for a small fee.
Room for 2-3 motorbikes in front to park.
Please ONLY take a motorbike down the path if you are comfortable riding small paths on your motorbike.
If you ever need ANYthing, my owners and their family (who all live nearby) will be by in under 10 minutes to help you. I am always there to help you, just a 1 minute walk away, if I am not out of town.
Interaction with Guests
I will be available always by email/What's App and by text if I am in the country.
Walking, motorbike, or taxi. Bicycling is also an option though I have never tried it, and prefer to take my motorbike on Ubud streets!
General respectfulness and cleanliness. Definitely NOT a place to have loud parties every night, out of respect to the neighbors (expat and Balinese). Very quiet neighborhood with noise after 10 pm kept to a level that others cannot hear outside the home.
Treat the place as you would your own home and please be respectful.
If you do smoke, please smoke outside ONLY (not in the bedroom) and dispose of cigarettes in trash.
Please dispose of trash and recycling in the proper bins to keep Bali clean. Thank you!
What a great place and neighborhood. Mona's an excellent advisor on all things Ubud, and the owner Wayan is basically a walking smile. I highly recommend staying here.
My expectations were surpassed.
Wonderful luxuriant garden. Pretty pond, on which surface lotuses bloom at nightfall. Spacious terrace with well-equipped kitchen area. Comfortable, bright bedroom and cozy bathroom.
The neighbourhood is inhabited though very tranquil. To my mind, the location is much more pleasurable than an urbanized central Ubud area. However, one can reach a center of Ubud by foot.
As far as you on Bali, important that there is no chicken coop nearby. So no screams at 4 am. Despite of ricefields are all around, the local frogs are obligingly quiet enough to save the bedroom’s silence. And surely there’s no traffic noise.
Wi-fi connection is stable and fast enough.
Mona will impress you as responsible and attentive host as possible. Wayan and Komang who maintain the property are very caring persons. Everything was exemplarily clean and nothing was out of condition.
For me it’s hard to define any drawbacks of this place. Weeks I spent at Mona’s house were magnificent.
This visit exceeding my expectations in every way. Mona had prepare everything perfectly and was on call for assistance regarding the house and Ubud in general. The landlords/housekeepers were the loveliest people and I really enjoyed my daily interactions with them. The area is great, close to things but private, and everything is just a little bit bigger, better and sweeter than the photos suggest!
I was travelling with my 1 year old daughter alone for a month and it was easy, safe and relaxing here. Can't recommend this listing highly enough.
This is my first time in Bali and honestly I wouldn't have had this much fun if it wasn't because of Mona. Mona helped me figuring out my living arrangement and really made the first time experience a lot less stressful. She set me up with airport pick up, everything i need to know about the area and local gems. I really felt like I was ready to experience Ubud once i got there instead of feeling lost. The house keeper couldn't be any nicer. They really left a great first impression for me of how warm and friendly Balinese are. And the villa!!! Pictures could not do it justice. You just have to experience it yourself in person. Beautiful beautiful place! Amazing space and energy. I stayed at 4 different villas and resorts during my trip and this is my favorite out of all of them. The villa really felt like a home instead of a foreign place. I cannot wait to come back! Thank you so much for making my Bali experience so far beyond what I'd expected. XO.
Thank you for your sweet review, Justin! Bali is a magical place and this little rice village in Ubud still retains that old-world character and I'm so happy you love Suweta House. I have put a lot of love into making it the way it is and it is SO nice to hear how much you appreciated the place! It is a true gem, this place. Look forward to you coming back! :)
Mona is a wonderful host, she is very nice, considerate and made coming to her home so easy and hassle free. I had just arrived in Bali from Australia and you just never know what you might be walking into!
The villa itself was private set in a lush little garden and the bedroom was lovely, clean and spacious. The 4 poster bed had a mosquito net which I'm sure would come in handy at different times of the year. The outdoor bathroom was lovely and totally private, in a island like Bali where people seem to be everywhere this home is really a gem!
Location wise it is really close to restaurants, bars and a short bike ride in Central Ubud.
A cleaner came around each day and cleaned the villa, the times when I happened to be there they were very discreet but friendly.
I'd thoroughly recommend staying at Mona's place if you ever come to Ubud.
