I am offering one bedroom in a two bedroom apartment and I live in the other bedroom. Albeit small, this apartment is clean and tidy. The number one perk is location...3 blocks from the lower east side, 10 minute walk to Soho, 3 blocks from Little Italy, etc. You will love how close everything is! Also, i am super close (practically across the street) to chinatown buses that will take you to place like boston, dc, virginia, all for cheap. If you don't mind smaller quarters and a loft bed (full size bed for one or two) this is a great fit. Please note that it is a five story walkup and the building itself has "character" (old tenement style/pre-war building). Safe neighborhood and building (mostly Chinese families). Easy access to the roof with beautiful NYC skyline view. I will have clean sheets and towels waiting. Laundry is around the corner (super cheap dry cleaning and drop off service!). Also, you can store your luggage at the laundry place for $3.00/day.
My top places in the neighborhood:
1. Best hand pulled noodles at Kuai Le
2. Delicious fried dumplings at Fried Dumplings (original name, eh?)
3. Brunch at Brown Cafe
4. Coffee at The Roasting Plant
5. Groceries at the Essex Street Market
6. Sunday morning stroll at the Hester Flea Market (summer only)
7. Chocolate Chip Banana Bread at Baby Cakes
8. Beer at New Beer
9. Shopping on Prince and Spring Street
10. Dance show at Dixon Place
Breanna was a great and flexible host and a wonderful person! The room is very functional, despite of cold weather it was warm and cosy all the time. And of course location is simply great.
Host: Breanna was one of two hosts (out of 10) who accepted our 15-day booking request, 6-months in advanced for the December period. As a result of this, I found this saved us some money* compared to prices listed in the December period which went up around 40%+ from other Airbnb hosts in the NY area. She responded quickly to any questions, and she let me purchase online goods that were to be delivered to her boyfriend's place. During our stay, she still responded quick to any questions.
The Room/Apt: The first 4-days unfortunately didn't start off great, as the central heating in the entire building couldn't be controlled, leaving our room especially very hot and unbearable. Trying to sleep on the loft/bunk bed was virtually impossible, and even with a wide open window letting in freezing cold air, it barely made a difference to the room temperature. A combination of NY's freezing weather (minus temperatures), mixed with the hot room temps and lack of sleep as a result, I believe lead to me becoming sick. Due to this, I made the decision to shorten our stay at the apartment (8 days in total after booking a week of tours) and visit other parts of the east coast instead *which saw our original savings become a much bigger expense. Breanna left us after day 5, and things did start to improve in the apartment. The heat problem went away, and we were able to sleep on the sofa bed in the lounge area which we found to be more comfortable than the loft/bunk bed. Sleeping next to the TV was great, as we were able to watch a great selection of Netflix entertainment before sleeping. The gas was also out for a few weeks, which Breanna notified us on our arrival and provided an electric portable stove for heating water etc.
The Area: The apartment is located in Chinatown, surrounded by plenty of places to eat, shop and do the laundry. This I believe is the best thing about living in this area. It's also located next to a train stop, so getting to and from places is a breeze and cheap, if you don't feel like supporting the local taxi network.
Conclusion: It was a great learning experience as both a guest and host on Airbnb. There wasn't much Breanna could do about the heating, so I think it's more a case of our bad luck with that, however as Airbnb hosts I think we must be prepared if things don't turn out and the actions we take to make our guests happy and safe in our home. Based on this experience, I can't say I'd be eager to stay there again, if the risk of similar problems were to pop up again. It really was the worst part of our NY trip, and we hope that any future guests there don't encounter the same problem and that our problem was just an isolated incident.
Breanna was very welcoming and accommodating. She made it easy to arrange the trip and her apartment was great, well equipped, tastefully furnished, great location (2 minutes from the subway) but a nice quiet room. I hope I get to go back! Thanks Breanna.
Breanna was very welcoming and helpful . she was rarely there and let us help ourselves to her TV and kitchen . she was very apologetic when the hot water went off in the entire building for a day and offered us a refund but it was of little inconvenience and not her fault . a cosy room with easy access to the metro
Breanna's house was our first Airbnb experience. Breanna was very helpful and polite and she even gave us tips about the neighborhood and the city. The house was in Chinatown, in a quiet and safe area where you could also find many grocery stores, restaurants and diners and only minutes away from Soho and lower east side. The metro station was conveniently located 2 min from our door. We were even lucky to have the place to ourselves for a few days, since Breanna left for Thanksgiving holidays. Our room although small was very cute and very very warm! Overall it was a very good experience. P.S. The house is on the 4th floor, with no elevator, so keep that in mind if you have a lot of luggage!
Great location, only a short walk to the subway. Bree was a great host too. I arrived much earlier than our agreed meeting time and she was accommodating enough to come home earlier to meet us. Will definitely recommend others there.
My wife ran in the 2013 ING NYC Marathon. Breanna's place was perfectly located for my wife getting to the Staten Island Ferry for the start of the marathon and for the both of us visiting the sights. The location has many subway connections (D, 6 & J). You have Canal street for asian food, Mulberry street for Italian food all with a 1/2 from he location. The room and bathroom were very clean and very comfortable. I would recommend this place for anyone visiting and wanting a taste of the New York life. We are definitely going to request Breanna's place again when we are in visiting NYC again.
After her prompt response to my booking request, Breanna provided me flexible arrival and departure times and was facile with text messaging to stay in touch. Her apartment was fairly easy to find, a Manhattan dwelling with a discretely situated entryway between two other businesses in the mixed use development typical of the Lower East Side.
Keep in mind her home is up about 4 flights of stairs. Her apartment appears recently updated, is clean, and tidy. The pictures provided (though may reflect previous furniture arrangements ) accurately reflect the feel of her home. The room itself is to my estimation very nice for a modest manhattan apartment. The loft bed is a double and a climb. She provided towels, linens, and availability of her glassware etc. All clean and actually very nice. The WiFi worked, is cable based so the bandwidth is understandably limited and at times temperamental.
Most importantly, she was kind, hospitable, and made me feel at home. Given the opportunity, I'd stay here again.
A great host and location. The room is perfect for one person and fine for two if you aren't bothered by limited space. Very clean and inviting.
