The village of Penestanan is set up on a ridge 15 minutes walk from the bustle of Ubud township and has long been known as the artists village. The main road to Ubud is 300 metres away, via a pathway and steps - 20 minutes walk to Ubud or 4 minutes in a taxi from the bottom of the steps. We are on a quiet walking path surrounded by ricefields and local and expat community life.. Nearby is an organic cafe, local warungs (casual eateries) and western restaurants, art galleries, a yoga studio and local supermarket. It is a SAFE area for women travelling alone.

The Supermarket also is close by.
I stayed at Ruth's villa for 2 weeks in December and was absolutely thrilled with both the house and the location. Ruth's house is ideally situated in a beautiful lush neighbourhood and has many excellent inexpensive eateries just down the path. I did not need to shop or cook for my entire visit as the local food was so delicious and affordable. Ruth's balcony and garden are just perfect - the balcony has a wonderful lush tropical view with numerous butterflies drifting by and the garden is full of stunning tropical plants and flowers. The pool was also ideal and it was a joy to come home to this little paradise after a hard days exploring. The house itself is charming, clean and comfortable with the added bonus of 3 lovely cats whose company I really enjoyed. Ruth has provided many thoughtful touches for her guests with linen and towels changed regularly and an excellent selection of DVDS plus her knowledge of the local area and Balinese culture were invaluable. I found Ruth's housekeeper Kadek to be a delightful and helpful person and her breakfasts were absolutely delicious. Ruth's driver Nick was also very friendly, punctual and reliable. I was lucky to be able to meet Ruth herself in the last part of my stay and found her to be a lovely generous and kind person who really went out of her way to make my stay a memorable and unique experience. Many thanks for our conversations and your wonderful hospitality Ruth and I hope to come back to Ubud some day very soon.
Ruth is a fine host who was very considerate during our stay. She provided plenty of information to get us started in our discovery of Ubud but also the space to really relax with no worries. The house is very lovely and situated in a calm and beautiful area, about 15-20 minutes from the center of Ubud. She proved very understanding and attentive when there were concerns, and it was a pleasure to share a lunchtime meeting with her, during an important day of ceremony in Ubud. Overall, we would recommend staying with Ruth whether your first or fiftieth time visiting Ubud.
A comfortable 2 storied home in quiet, safe Penestanan location, 20 min walk into Ubud Centre. I was fortunate to have the whole house as the host was travelling herself. Several cafes, restaurants and shops close by and accessible by lovely walking tracks.
Good WiFi. Loved sitting on upper verandah working online or reading a book! Lovely little garden and pool. Friendly, welcoming neighbours.
Ruth's place 'Above The Palm Trees' was magical. We loved sitting out on the daybed each morning and just reading and listening to nature. It really was like a refuge and so safe and surrounded by a few beautiful cafe's and spas within walking distance. The neighborhood would have to be one of the best in Ubud...not too busy and not too quiet. It was just right. Ruth as a host was fantastic. Really made our stay and gave us detailed notes and recommendations to ensure we had everything we needed. I would highly recommend staying here.

About the Host, Ruth
I’m a permanent resident originally from Australia (actually born in England but lived most of my life in Aus) with a love of Bali, its people and its culture. I love good food and In Sydney some years ago I had a cafe.
I enjoy having guests in my home and helping them get the most out of their stay, but I also respect people's privacy.
I’m into yoga and meditation and being healthy (as much as I can with such a love of food) . I’m passionate about colour and design, love travel, love sharing the things I know about and work towards balance in my life.
Here I am fascinated by the culture - continually learning more about the ceremonies, special occasions, and temple decorations. I love the gentleness of the Balinese people and how they are always smiling and willing to talk and help people. I am also grateful for the peace and tranquility living here offers - it really is a magical place.
