About This Listing
Classic San Francisco home (Edwardian) in the heart of San Francisco. Located 10 minutes walk from: Fisherman's Wharf, Little Italy, Chinatown, Coit Tower, Lombard (Crookedest) Street etc. and the cable car stops just around the corner.
ABOUT THE HOUSE
Ground floor of two story Edwardian house in a little one-block long alley in North Beach built in the early 1900's. We share a common front door. I live upstairs and guests have exclusive use of the ground floor living area (please see below regarding privacy). The house is an easy 10 minutes walk to many famous San Francisco landmarks - Coit Tower, Little Italy, Washington Square Park, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Lombard Street, Ghiradelli Square etc. With a Walk Score of 94 out of 100, this puts my place in the "Walker's Paradise" category on the WalkScore website. Cable car stop merely yards away from front door, and the historic F line street cars stop is only 10 minutes walk away at Fisherman's Wharf. For a $2.50 fare, the street cars will take you along the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building, along Market Street all the way out to the Castro area. There are plenty of bike rental shops just around the corner and lots of great restaurants, bars and cafes (including a stand-up comedy venue) a short walk from the house.
YOUR OWN SPACE
We share a front door, but unlike most other listings, other than your own bedroom, you also have your own bathroom, living room and a fully equipped kitchen. Like many bathrooms in older homes, the one provided is on the smaller side, but you have exclusive use of it. I live independently upstairs. Please note: the Guest's ground floor area is reached through a corridor next to the stairs leading upstairs to the area where I reside. While this provides a high degree of privacy, it does not guarantee total privacy provided by a door separating the two floors. Your queen bed is extra comfy with a luxurious mattress and cotton sheets. I also provide pure cotton towels for the bathroom and a hair dryer.
TRANSPORTATION FROM SFO
If you don't have too much luggage, I recommend taking the BART train which leaves directly from SFO Airport. The Hyatt Hotel is right beside the Embarcadero Station and from there, you can catch a taxi to 31 Jansen (about a 10 minute ride). Alternatively, you can take the 30 Stockton bus on Kearny St. about a half block from the Montgomery Station ($2.25 bus fare, you'll need exact change).
I don't recommend taking a shuttle van. In my experience, the van goes first to all the City hotels, then the Fisherman's Wharf hotels before taking passengers to residential addresses. The experience can be frustratingly long and tedious. Not fun, especially after a long flight.
The taxi fare from SFO is around $55 to $75 each way depending on traffic. A town car limousine service is around $100 each way.
I can also recommend reaching my place from SFO by using the car-share service Uber. If you have not downloaded the Uber app to your smartphone, you can sign on using this discount code: jhoqp
Doing so, you will get a $30 credit towards your first ride and that should make the ride to my place around $10.
However, I can offer you a ride to or from SFO in my Jaguar for $50 each way. Just email me to arrange.
San Francisco, especially North Beach is a pedestrian-friendly place (Walk Score is 94: see first paragraph above). You'll see a lot more going around by public transportation and on foot. Parking generally in San Francisco is expensive and difficult. Unless you plan to drive to San Francisco, or take side trips out of town (for example, to Napa or Santa Cruz), I suggest not having a car. There is 2 hour street parking (between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm) on my street and in the neighborhood as well as metered parking near shops. Availability of street parking is not too bad for San Francisco especially during the week, but can be a little challenging on weekend evenings. There are secure garages close by. The nearest is at the corner of Filbert and Columbus (721 Filbert), about a block and a half away. Rates are $10 Early Bird (in by 11 am out by 7 pm), $20 max.
You can also easily pick up a Car Share rental (e.g. 2 Zipcars are stationed next door) or Citycarshare a block away.
I am a semi-retired single guy who has lived in the Bay Area for almost 20 years. I have a little dog, a Westie, who loves having guests. I know a lot about the local businesses, so feel free to ask me for recommendations.
We share a common front door, but otherwise Guests will have exclusive use of the bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen on the ground floor. I live upstairs where I have my own facilities. Please see note regarding privacy above under "Your Own Space."
Interaction with Guests
Guests have a lot of privacy. Upon checking in, I can provide as much advice and information as they require, and will be on hand most of the time to provide whatever extra guidance and help as needed.
North Beach has been described as "the heart of San Francisco" and my place can be described as being in the heart of North Beach. From the front door, it's an easy 10-15 minute walk to Little Italy, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Telegraph Hill, Lombard Street, Russian Hill etc. Or, you can catch a bus or cable car from stops just around the corner to get to Downtown. There are numerous great restaurants and coffee shops just a short walk away.
The bus and cable car stops are mere yards away from the front door. In addition, you can rent a Zipcar from just next door.
Other Things to Note
Alcatraz tours are very popular. The ferries and tours leave from Pier 33, an easy 15 minute walk away. However, it is advisable to purchase tickets online well in advance. Right now, there's an extraordinary art exhibit there by Chinese conceptual artist Ai WeiWei. The exhibit runs until April 26, 2015. Don't miss it.

I had a perfect time in Peter's appartment.
Situation is incredible with lots of attractions at walking distance!
The appartment was exactly as advertised, very cosy and Peter was very helpfull with advices on what to do and where to go.
I totally recommend this place to anyone who want to visit San Francisco!
My husband and I wanted an unforgettable experience in San Francisco for our honeymoon. And that's exactly what happened. Peter was a wonderful host, we had the opportunity to meet their skills in the kitchen for a delicious dinner and also in a comforting soup that he kindly made when he knew that I had a stomach pain. Peter is very attentive and kind, he gave us several tips on how to best enjoy the city and his dog is adorable, very cute. The place is cozy and large, just as the announcement, everything was perfect. We recommend and certainly when we get back to wonderful San Francisco would like to stay again with Peter. It was exelente and unforgettable!
This North Beach apartment is the perfect place the put your feet up on your San Francisco vacation. It's close to everything, and it's bigger than a hotel room. So you have plenty of space to spread out. It was clean, and Peter makes sure you have everything you need. He's the perfect host! I hope to stay they're again next time I'm in the city!
Peter was really accommodating and helpful throughout our trip. The location of the apartment is central to all major tourist attractions. He's a very experienced host and will make sure you're well looked after. I would recommend everyone to stay here.
Peter's apartment is in a prime location. Easy, level walking access to the Fisherman's Wharf precinct (15-20 mins), cable car (Mason-Powell line) and bus stops within 100 metres.
Apart from location, the other outstanding feature of the apartment is the sleep quality - comfortable bed and peace and quiet at night. The kitchen had all we needed and the wifi is fast and reliable.
Peter's communications were prompt and informative. Even though he was out of town for our arrival he arranged for his friend Paula to greet us. His instructions for reaching his apartment via train and cab were accurate and cost effective. The information booklet in the apartment (collated by Peter) is a mine of advice and information.
For supplies we visited Trader Joe's (5 mins walk down Mason) for everything we needed. Coin-operated laundry (with change machine, also on Mason) is even closer. One minute walk to 901 Columbus Bar and Cafe for $2 draft beer and free wifi.
All in all a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Will have no hesitation to recommend Peter's apartment to friends and family.
Peter is a great host and his apartment is ideally located to explore many of the awesome things San Fransisco has to offer.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The location was ideal walking distance to some of the main sights in the city. Peter (and Haley) was a great host and provided us with good recommendations for nearby restaurants and cafes.
