I'm a dance teacher with an in-home studio, so I may be working with students during your stay. I've lived in Oakland all of my adult life and can tell you the best places to go in the East Bay and San Francisco, as well as the tourist traps to avoid. If you're dancers, I can also tell you where to go dancing. For a unique San Francisco experience, I can take you swing dancing in Golden Gate Park on Sunday mornings where you can take a free half hour beginner lesson at noon and join the regular dancers for lunch in a nearby restaurant a couple of hours later. It's a free, and one of a kind, event! Lake Merritt is considered by many to be the jewel of Oakland. I also offer a half off special for Airbnb guests who want to take a lesson from me!
The neighborhood offers:
* a charming farmers market every Saturday
* Easy walk to Gold's Gym and library
* A wide range of cafes, restaurants
* Cinema & shopping
* TraderJoes and Wholefoods SuperMarkets
* Gondolas & boating and
* 3 & 1/2 mile jogging track around the Lake
*Children's Fairyland, the original inspiration for Disneyland
* Easy access to San Francisco by Bart, bus and Carpool
* Close to historic Fox Theater & the new Cathedral
* Close to the Paramount Theater, Oakland convention center, Oakland Arena & Coliseum
Your room with bath is private. You share kitchen and laundry with me.
Interaction with Guests
I am happy to chat with you when you are feeling sociable and leave you to your privacy when you need to be alone. I also enjoy sharing insider tips about little known places to visit. My meal schedule is erratic and I eat when I have a chance in between students, so usually I'm not able to share meals with you.
walking distance to Trader Joe's, Lake Merritt, and a thriving shopping and restaurant part of town, but a small neighborhood feeling at home with plenty of street parking
I'm on the bus line to San Francisco and other parts of the East Bay, but BART is 2 miles away. There is a bus to BART but it takes about an hour to get to SF if you take BART.
Other Things to Note
The front door opens with a code, so you don't have to carry a key. I just exchanged the futon bed shown in the pictures for a queen size memory foam bed which is not shown yet, but soon I'll change the picture to reflect the change. Your bathroom was just added and not yet photographed.
Please let me know when to expect you so that I can arrange to be here to greet you when you arrive.
Cats are indoor cats, so please be careful not to let them out.
I'm highly sensitive to the smell of tobacco on clothing and breath, so please do not apply if you smoke, even if you don't do so inside the house. The house is not childproof, so I'm afraid I can't accomodate children. My cats are territorial , so please no pets either.
Very good stay, lovely host, great room, good neighborhood, walking distance to Lake Merritt. Highly recommend!
LaurieAnn made us feel very welcome, the room was as described and felt private with our own shower. The neighborhood was at the top of a hill an easy walk to Lake Merritt and Grand Lake area, perfect for us. We were visiting our daughter, so did not use the kitchen, but just slept there.
LaurieAnn contacted me several days before I came to advise me of her schedule and when the best time to arrive would be, also giving me alternative suggestions of times in case they were needed. I found that very helpful and considerate. She is a warm and congenial person and her house is in a pleasant hilly residential neighborhood with good parking opportunities. We had very restful and quiet sleeps and enjoyed the little cat who greeted us; also the great shower.The house is up a hill, as pictured, about 20 fairly steep steps so some may want to take note in case of any infirmities.
We also appreciated the little balcony. All in all, a pleasant place to stay.
Nice, comfortable, quite place. Laurie and rob were helpful and friendly.
LaurieAnn was great. Very friendly and made us feel right at home. The house is in a great neighborhood near Lake Merritt.
LaurieAnn was friendly and welcoming, and clearly has her airbnb process dialed in. Everything was clearly explained and I knew exactly how she was comfortable with me using her house, never felt like I was in the way, etc. She was available if I needed her but also left me to my own devices. The room is quiet and comfortable and exactly as described, with a very comfy memory foam bed. I slept so well! Bathroom and kitchen are also clean and nice. The neighborhood felt safe and welcoming. I really enjoyed my stay and would stay with her again.
I'm a dance teacher specializing in working with dance phobic people who can't learn from anyone else. I'm passionate about teaching and spreading the joy of dance, especially partner dance. I also collect rare plants and have a beautiful and interesting (if a tad unruly) garden, which I tend to all by myself, hence the unruly part. I love to cook, but my diet is pretty basic, mostly plants, simply prepared with very little processed foods. I'm a good conversationalist, but my schedule is erratic, so no guarantee I'll be around when you want to talk. Happy to supply you with all the info you want about the area! I can't live without good friends, integrity, laughter, dancing, new things to try, and nature. When I travel, it's usually dance related, although I did achieve my dream of an English country garden tour a few years ago. I spent the month of July in Sweden and Norway for 8 years studying a European jazz dance (boogie woogie) that I fell in love with. My home is a quiet space, good for people who want to rest when they get back to their room, not good for people who want to party in their room, rather than on the town. (Also not good for smokers. Please see house rules if you smoke.)
