The Space

Welcome to my clean and quiet renovated studio apartment in the historic center of Bad Aussee. It's cosy, fully-equipped and has a nice balcony with mountain views.

The price is for the whole apartment no matter how many people.

There's a big tub, a clean bathroom, a kitchenette, one bunk bed, a comfortable futon, a dining table, and extra chairs for morning coffee or evening dinner on the balcony.

There are lots of shops, grocery stores, bridges, trails and bus connections nearby.

The must-see village on the water Hallstatt is 2 train stops, 2 buses, or a 20 minute drive away. The other 2 beautiful lakes Grundlsee and Altaussee are a five minute drive from Bad Aussee.

It's a great base for mountain tourists of all kinds (adventure and relaxing). Free parking.

-See Ski and Internet info below!-

This place can serve as a writing get-a-way, a spiritual retreat or a base for outdoor adventure in all 4 seasons!

Experience this studio apartment in the center of the quiet mountain village located at the geographical center of Austria about an hour drive from where the Sound of Music was filmed.

This former hotel room on the 2nd floor includes a kitchenette with a stove, refrigerator, dish washer, coffee maker and everything you need for cooking on a stove top.

It's a small place but has a lot to offer. It sleeps 4 (1 bunk bed and one quality IKEA fold-out Futon (I sleep on the same Futon at home every night, love it)...best 2 adults and 2 children because the entire place is a former hotel room 32 square meters/ 350 Square feet).

The price is for the entire apartment not per person! Many families stay here. Please note the €30 cash key and cleaning fee (€45 if you depart on a Sunday or holiday...love the Austrian labor situation).

Check out the locality which Frommers calls one of the most scenic places in Austria. There are cafes, grocery stores, restaurants, narrow beautiful roads, hand-made lederhosen shops, a park, a golf course, rivers, idyllic bridges, trails, panorama views, spas, and skiing all nearby.

Visit Bergfex for more info on the area for summer and winter activities. Salzkammergut is good to visit as well.

Frolic in a field just 5 minutes away surrounded by 360' panorama mountain views. Walk back and window shop the hand-made lederhosen and dirndl outlets. Have a coffee across the street just steps away from the fairy tale bridge crossing a rushing Alpine stream. The well-groomed Kurpark is the confluence of two crisp and clear rivers.

This place is a real gem.

American-owned. Let me know how I can help make your stay terrific!

SKI RESORTS IN THE AREA

A free skibus runs to and from the center of Bad Aussee to nearby Loser Mountain Ski Resort. A paid bus or train run to Tauplitz ski resort. You can take a paid bus then free skibus to Dachstein West and/or Krippenstein Free Ride Resort (go cross-country or snowshoeing up there then go off-trail down!). These are all highly-recommended and are less than 30 minutes away by car and public transportation! There are even more world class skiing options within an hour of Bad Aussee. Schladming (Alpine World Ski Championships 2013) is a 60 minute drive away. Ski rental is available at all these sites. Cross country groomed paths are in Bad Aussee, Bad Mitterndorf, Obertraun and others. There's sled rental at Loser. Spas & saunas with swimming for children are here in Bad Aussee and also in Bad Mitterndorf and Bad Ischl. Snowshoeing options are everywhere! Enjoy the Winter!

OPTIONAL BUILDING INTERNET NOTE: Due to the request of a few guests I've installed a high-speed unlimited Internet connection in the apartment. The speed is tested at 10 MB/s download, 3 MB/s upload so it's plenty fast. You can connect via Wifi or with a LAN connection. The router has ethernet ports.
In order to keep the base price low and the "retreat level" high I'll respect my guests' wishes to not have to help pay more in rent due to this expensive Internet connection. Many have been happy to be able to "unplug" for a few days! So the WiFi Internet is optional. The cost is 20 Euros to connect for the entirety of your stay (keep the password if you return!). Email or text me if you'd like to plug in. Also, since I'm not an I.T. guy, I can't guarantee a connection. I'm down there only every 2-3 months and by no means wish to train down just to fix a connection. Thanks for understanding (The apartment has been fine without Internet for 4+ years... The nature is so beautiful outside. You might enjoy keeping the apartment work-free. But I want it to be a win/win solution for all my guests. I appreciate your understanding.)

The Meranplatz town square is idyllic. Like a fairy tale! The apartment is on Meranplatz between two 600 year old churches! Very Alpine. Very European (especially the bells).
Enjoy the restaurant below or the two wine bars on Meranplatz. The Penny Market grocery store is across the street. Treat yourself to a jog or a walk up any trail. Two children's playgrounds within a 10 minute walk. A lovely historic neighborhood!

A bus in front of the apartment on Meranplatz runs up to the beautiful Lake Grundlsee or to/from the Bad Aussee train station.

Another bus also runs from the nearby Kurpark/Post Office to Lake Altaussee and the Loser Mountain Resort for Skiing and Hiking.

The apartment is 1.6 km from the train station which connects the entire region to ski resorts, beautiful towns, other lakes, hiking, scenery, spas, Salzburg (1.5 hours), Vienna (3.5 hours), etc.

No pets. No smoking.

The 30€ cash key and cleaning expense is a typical expense in the area. (45€ if you depart on a Sunday or Holiday...local Austrian labor..) Thanks for noting this required one-time expense into your expenses.

Laundry and Internet connection are available for a fee.

I live in Czech so I won't be around but I've set things up so you can have an easy and enjoyable stay.

  • Mark provided detailed information for us. We had no problem finding the apartment. It was exactly as described, and was a perfect base to explore this beautiful area!

  • Nice town. Nice apartment. Great host.

    June 2014
  • Mark's apartment is situated in the heart of one of the most beautiful places of the world - Salzkammergut. It's very clean and comfortable for even 4 adult persons. It has own free parking, own good internet, incredible view from balcony. You can easily get to all the nearest attractions: lakes, mountains, Salzburg and Grossglockner. I advise Mark and his apartment to everybody.

    June 2014
  • The apartment was great! Super clean and in a great location. You can really feel at home here. Mark was great at getting back to me with any questions I had.

    May 2014
  • Mark is a very warm host and makes sure that you will check-in the apartment hassle free - including providing video and print instructions on how to navigate to his apartment, how to use the facilities and what's available around. Very quiet neighbourhood with a restaurant and supermarket right in front of the apartment block.

Will definitely look to rent this place when I visit Hallstatt again.

  • Our stay in Mark's flat was fantastic! It had all of the amenities we could need and was in an excellent location. Bad Aussee is a beautiful small town that you can spend relaxing days wandering through. Mark was very helpful in his information and everything stated was accurate. We would recommend staying here to anyone who wants an incredible price for a great place!

    April 2014
  • Great location, and great price. We stayed with 2 kids and enjoyed both the apartment and Bad Aussee. Mark was really helpful with information and responsive to our requests. We look forward to going back in the summer!

    January 2014
  • The Flat is exactly as described, instructions are very clear and everything was very easy to figure out, thanks Mark.
One huge plus was the fully equiped and clean Kitchenette and the Penny Markt supermarket across the street. We also had a pretty decent meal in the restaurant downstairs, but be aware they only take cash. The town is nice, but the area is really awsome, a visit to Hallstat is a definite MUST,,,,
    Thanks again

  • The Town: This was my first time in the Alps! A beautiful place for much needed rest and time with my husband. It seems there is very little Western/American influence in this Austria town; nearly everything, menus and all, is in German. Even compared to other European towns and cities, Bad Aussee seemed to possess a certain and rare purity, an ideal place to retreat.

The Place and host: We came in on the train at night, and as a result of Mark's clear directions, we were able to find the place and know exactly what to do to settle in. Because everything was exactly as advertised, nothing, except for the wonderful room-darkening curtains, surprised or disappointed us about the place. It was perfect for what we needed. Thank you.

  • This apartment is well located in the centre of Bad Aussee and excellent value for the price. It is worth noting it is a sofa bed and therefore may not be ideal for longer stays? Similarly if you are eating out most of the time the basic kitchen facilities will not be an issue. We found Mark to be helpful and prompt in his communication with us. Overall we really enjoyed our stay so any negatives should be seen in that light.

About
I am from Illinois, USA but I love Europe and have lived in the Czech Republic since 1999. I really like historical town squares and also the mountains. So I enjoy European cities and the countryside. Prague is the most beautiful city in the world, in my opinion. The Alps are so fun to see on a motorcycle, on a snowboard or on a good pair of hiking boots. I'm a big fan of Lonely Planet guidebooks--they've taken me to some fascinating places around the world. I listen to a lot of stuff on my iPhone and have plenty of pictures from the 40 countries I've visited. Put me in a narrow street cafe with some good reading and bad weather outside and I'm happy. Send me out into the crisp air with a blue sky and I'll enjoy nature with great appreciation. I've seen a lot of beautiful places but my favorite area of the world for natural beauty and Alpine culture is the Lake Region Salzkammergut in Austria. My pet peeves are bugs, humidity, traffic and rip offs. That's why I love the cool air, spacious views and customer service of central Austria. I like the air conditioning, public transportation and prices in Prague.
