Eco-friendly Kohala Cocopalms Hale

House - Entire home/apt · Hoea Makai Road, Hawi, HI 96719, United States

The Space

A contemporary Zen-like studio in its own separate hale (building) that incorporates an eco-friendly eat-in kitchen, living room space with couch, chaise and tropical-themed carved cabinetry, a spacious travertine bathroom with shower for two, and seven-foot diameter round floating bed! The three 11 foot wide and 10 foot high glass sliding doors and cathedral peak skylight bring the outdoors inside and provide breathtaking views of the ocean and gardens.

Our 34 acre ranch is only two miles from the town of Hawi but feels very remote with few nearby neighbors. We have extensive ocean views and our compound has two hales, a large bamboo barn/community building, a green house, a chicken house, and tractor storage shed. The town of Hawi and neighboring Kapa‘au have numerous shoppes, restaurants and attractions. Local popular attractions are the Ziplines, Kohala Ditch Adventure (a kayak ride through a handmade aqueduct which travels through stone tunnels and across elevated bridges), hiking at Pololu and I‘ole, swimming and snorkeling at Mahukona, and visiting many other local parks (Keokea, Lapakahi, Kamehameha, Kapa‘a, and more). We are 35-45 minutes from resort areas and some of the best beaches on the island.

Our property is off-grid as we generate all our own electricity so no overhead lines burden our views. We have several gardens ranging from our coconut circles, aquaponic gardens, herb mandala, pineapple and banana plantings, and our newly planted windbreaks. We raise organic chickens and tilapia as well as many tropical food and foliage plantings. We have been featured in several magazines and as part of the Grand Green Homes tours sponsored by the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. Our colorful clay walls are like living in a piece of fine pottery. Many people say our property is calming and in harmony with nature.

There is infrequent public transit within a couple of miles of our property. We recommend visitors have a car for ease of access to our property and nearby attractions. WIFI internet access is available in our Bamboo barn/community building.

We host public events such as African drumming and dance.

  • We live on the Big Island and decided to have a staycation for our 10th anniversary. Where do you go for vacation when you live in Hawaii? Somewhere else in Hawaii! Our stay with Eila and Holly was a peaceful respite from our multi-faceted life. We focused on three things: sleep, hike/walks, and eating. After only one day away from home, two nights at Kohala Koi Guest Hale, we feel completely restored and as if we have had two weeks of vacation. The Hale is very restful and cozy. The hosting family is gracious and joyful, as well as gently wise.

  • This guesthouse was a joy in our trip !
-The communication with Holly was easy, no problem at all to speak or to find the property, directions were clear.
-It's very close to Hawi town.
    -Great view.
-This experience was full of nice little attentions, details are being taken care of.
-The room and bathroom were spotless-clean.
-The bathroom was very pleasant to be in, many flowers and large shower.
    -SUPER comfortable bed.
-Holly and Elia are two great and very interesting women to speak with.
    -Good breakfast :)
-I could visit the hen house and pet some of them, yay!
-Cute cats and dog, they like to play and are very happy animals.

The room itself is a little bit on the small size, especially if you travel with larger suitcases. You cannot really fix a snack or make tea in the room. That was not a problem to us because we were out most of the time. But if you get stuck with bad weather and don't feel like going out, you can't really stay in the room all day. I imagine that in that case you could chill in the barn or on the lanai with the great view.

The wi-fi is limited to the hours we were away from the house, so it wasn't really easy to check out activities, mails, etc. But in the end it's all good because it forces you to relax and leave worries behind !

The property is amazing, really. I would definitly recommend to stay there. You will get a good sense of the good vibe these women live with! Thanks Holly and Elia ! x

  • Now that I have stayed here, my enchantment with The Big Island is firmly tangled with the energy of The Algood property and Holly and Eila. I am already obsessing when I can return for a longer stay here.

I stayed for two nights and had a magical experience: Arrived in the dark, greeted by Eila, the overwhelming starry sky and nature sounds. I asked Eila where to go for the sunrise and was so taken by the place she suggested that I woke up and went there on both mornings. Upon my return to their house, a delicious breakfast, coffee and Holly or Eila were awaiting me. As part of our engaging conversations, I took plenty of tailored advice on where and how to experience the area. I drove on all the roads they recommended, went to all the beaches and couldn't get enough. Wish I had more time to explore their recommendations for food places in Hawi.

Their land is big and full of life. You can decide how much you want to know or engage but you'll feel immersed regardless. Besides my high ceiling beautiful private shower, I was also revealed an outside shower, which I couldn't resist. Oh, and while lying in my bed at night, I could stare at the stars above through the skylight, listening to the life-giving sounds coming from the outside.

  • We spent an evening in February at the Algoods' Kohala guest house. The property is really impressive, at the north point of the island, looking across toward Maui. We were grateful to meet our kind, hospitable hosts; they made us a delicious breakfast and gave us great tips on what to visit in the area. It was also interesting to talk to them and learn about their work on the island--inspiring!

  • MUCH more comfortable than we expected. Some of the best available hot water we had on the entire island! Room is small but very well equipped (including candles) and Holly didn't seem to mind that we pulled some lawn chairs around to the patio in front of our little cabana, to sit out at night and look at the stars. They were amazing! The darkness is so complete. Note that the rental cabana is behind the main building. The deck (which we also used) is accessed through Holly's living space only.

  • We loved staying with Holly and Eila. They were great hosts! They were very friendly and helpful in sharing information of great places to see in the area! They made us feel very welcome! The room is beautiful, comfortable, very clean and had everything we needed. The proprety is absolutely stunning! Its very very quiet, but at the same time conveniently located close to Hawi. We loved our stay here and would absolutely recommend staying with them!

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kohala Cocopalms Hale which offers comfortable accommodations, great organic food, beautiful vistas and even whale watching! Holly and Eila were the perfect hosts and made every effort to make our visit there a memorable experience. I especially appreciated their willingness to accommodate my GF dietary needs. This is a special place run by two very special people. Hope to visit again soon. Ten stars!

  • We were only able to stay one night at the Kohala Koi Guest Hale, but will be returning for additional time on any trip to the Big Island. Amazing grounds with gorgeous views of the ocean and top notch facilities. Holly stayed up late for us as we were leaving Kona late in the evening and revolved breakfast around what time was best for us the next morning. We can't say enough about the hospitality and overall experience we had.
