House:
We have lovingly renovated this unique, mid century house and turned it into a modern home with a Scandinavian style. The house is located on a small hill near the Shenandoah River with gorgeous views of the National Park across the county. You'll wake up to the sunrise, then watch the sun slowly fall on the mountains as night comes. Though we are on a small road that follows the river, you'll feel secluded because there are no visible neighbors.
We've updated the home with all conveniences, including central AC, heat and high speed WiFi. This is not a rustic cabin, but some seriously awesome luxury. A great way to enjoy the outdoors. If you have any special needs, just ask. We live a quick ten minutes away.
Parking:
The home is on a small hill with a concrete driveway that will allow you to drive right up to the front door. Two cars can park up top. One car can park at the bottom of the driveway, if needed. Any vehicle can access the house, no AWD needed.
Bedrooms:
The house sleeps up to six people, but also perfect for a couple who want a quiet getaway.
There are two private bedrooms. The downstairs master suite has a Restoration Hardware king size bed and Roku smart TV. The second, upstairs bedroom has a West Elm Queen Bed, Roku smart TV and private deck with mountain views.
There's also two adult-sized, handmade bunk beds that are built into the downstairs nook. You can use the heavy curtain to separate the space for privacy. Great for kids, or adults who are kids at heart.
We gladly provide all towels, bed linens, and pillows.
Bathroom:
We have a large full bathroom with a brand new, Americast soaking tub and rainhead shower. We provide shower gel, shampoo and towels.
Living room:
We like to spread out on our vintage, mid century couch and the stylish, custom chairs. There are plenty of board games, playing cards, novels, kids books and backlogs of magazines to read. Or hook your phone up to the bluetooth speaker and play music on the stereo.
Kitchen:
The kitchen is fully equipped with a six person farm table. You’ll have everything you need to cook a holiday meal, bake cupcakes, or just make coffee + toast or use the microwave for simple reheating. The refrigerator is a smaller European model but can hold enough food for a big family. Plus we have an energy efficient dishwasher for easy clean up. We provide a blender, crock pot/slow cooker, pots, pans, dishes and all utensils.
If you need anything we don’t have, we'll do our very best to accommodate. We provide a lot of "starter stuff" so guests don't have to over-buy for short stays (condiments, Olive oil, spices, bug repellent, sunscreen, etc).
Coffee. We love it, we own Broad Porch Coffee and we roast it fresh downtown! There are a couple different ways to make coffee. We have a drip machine with a compostable filters. Or you can use our stainless steel french press. We provide fresh Broad Porch ground coffee, sugar (and non-sugars) and half and half minis in the fridge. If you bring your own beans, you can use our electric burr grinder. We provide different kinds of tea because tea we like tea too.
Entertainment:
The house and property has high speed WiFi access. We installed a Ubiquiti wireless router so the internet reaches to all corners of the yard and around the house. If they even have it, many local rentals have either slow satellite access or limited bandwidth from the cell tower. We made sure to get fast, unlimited broadband.
Lounge inside to check your email and catch up on videos, or hang out on the deck while researching cool hikes online. Both flatscreens are Roku Smart TVs where you can easily sign into any of your streaming accounts, they are in Guest Mode, so will automatically sign you out at check out time.
Kid stuff:
Because you're probably traveling with enough stuff already, we do have a high chair, a Pak n' Play, and plastic eating dishes for small kids. Just let us know if there's an infant in your group so we can have things ready for your arrival.
BBQ:
We have a brand new Weber gas grill with plenty of fuel. Have fun cooking on our custom hand-laid stone patio. We have foil, wooden skewers, and all the tools you need.
There's a rock fire pit to build small campfires on the side yard above the patio. We always leave you with BBQ tools, and plenty of firewood for the firepit.
Outdoor Space:
Our crowning renovation achievement is the black locust hardwood deck with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah National Park. Hardwood Adirondack chairs allow you to enjoy the view with a cold drink (bottle openers on every chair). Sunrises and sunsets are priceless. With no light pollution, you can see the Milky Way from the porch at night.
The yard is fairly steep since the home is on a hill, but there is an area to walk your dog right outside the door for quick relief. We also have a long leash secured to a pole on the front porch by the BBQ area so dogs can safely be outside while you're cooking or lounging on the benches.
Shenandoah River Outfitters:
500 ft from our front door is the Shenandoah River Outfitters. Here you can rent tubes, canoes, or kayaks to float down the river. They handle everything including life preservers, floating coolers, and transportation to and from the river. We have their schedule and prices posted in the house. It's an all day adventure.
If you are experienced and own your own equipment to float and can arrange your vehicles, you can drop off at the Inskeep Boat Launch on Bixlers Ferry Rd and get out at the public boat landing just down from our house. It's a nice 3-4 hour float.
Fishing:
The Shenandoah River offers plenty of spots to fish. There's also a small public pond, Bealers Ferry Pond, two minutes from the house. The fish are kept stocked by the Fish and Wildlife department. Great for kids who demand guaranteed bites!
Shenandoah National Park:
We're a quick drive across town to the Thornton Gap Entrance to the Shenandoah National Park. You can buy a day or week pass into the park to drive the 110-mile Skyline Drive. Or choose from the approximately 100 day hikes (of varying difficulty) that show off the Park's many waterfalls and vistas. We have booklets describing all the hikes. If you want to get 5 feet away from a deer, you'll be able to. Sometimes it's fun to eat at Skyland on top of the mountain where you can see the all of Page County below.
George Washington National Forest:
The forest includes the land across the street from us, but it's merely a fifteen minute drive to some of the best hiking trails in the area. The Stephens Trail Hike offers panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley along the Massanutten Mountain ridge line, ending at the stunning panoramic Kennedy's Peak tower. It's a really fun hike (our favorite) with lots of chances to see wildlife.
Luray Caverns:
The Caverns are world famous since they were discovered over a century ago. The family who runs the Caverns have done a great job creating an inspiring, tasteful experience. It's a perfect place for an afternoon trip underground. There also plenty of other activities for kids like the giant maze and jungle gym. The Pioneer museum showcases demonstrations on how the first settlers in the area lived.
Weddings:
Luray is known for its beautiful wedding venues. Our house is a perfect home base to stay when attending your friend's or family's wedding. We're are just a few miles down the road from Shenandoah Woods, Faithbrooke Barn and all the other popular venues. In order to help you look your best, we have a full length mirror, iron and ironing board, and lint rollers.
Small Town USA:
Luray is a quintessential small American town with a number of restaurants from fancy dining to burger joints. We opened Broad Porch Coffee cafe at 20 W Main St in April 2021. We take our coffee, food and hospitality seriously. Come visit for breakfast, brunch or lunch. We roast our coffee daily and our biscuits are fresh. We rival any urban coffee shop right here in little Luray.
Several pizza places deliver to the house if you just want to relax and let someone else cook.
Treasure hunt at the antique stores, or grab outdoor gear at the outfitters. Page Theater, a true local treasure (bright pink building on Main Street), is open for matinee and evening screenings. Several groceries stores and Walmart will provide you with everything you need. Hawksbill Brewery recently opened where they make all their own beer. West Main Market hosts live music in their outdoor beer garden, check their schedule online. The Luray Zoo is on the edge of town and famous for rescuing exotic animals. Perfect for kids who want to safely get close to some cool animals.
Our newly renovated hospital, Page Memorial, w/ a 24-hour emergency room is just 10 minutes away. We are just a text away if you have questions.
Renewable Power:
We buy 100% renewable power from our local electric coop (SVEC), which buys the power from Stony Creek Wind Farm. We have an outdoor 110v outlet if you want to trickle charge your electric car (we hope to see more of them!)
Guest access
Guests have access to the entire home. Everything is there for you to use.
