The Washington Cabin:

In 1796, George Washington endowed Washington and Lee (then known as Liberty Hall Academy) with $20,000 in the form of 100 shares of James River Canal Company stock. That gift helped the school survive and would be worth millions today. The daughter of George Washington’s adopted son, Mary Ann Randolph Custis, married Robert E. Lee in 1831.

Robert E. Lee served as president of Washington and Lee from 1865 to 1970. During that time, he provided innovative leadership and started many traditions that survive today. He added the first journalism and engineering courses as well as starting the law school.

Robert E. Lee is buried in Lee Chapel and his home is occupied by the President of the University.
