About this listing
Eclectic 3 bedroom home close to Pacuare, Costa Rica's world famous white water river, plus other high adventure real nature opportunities.
Private hot tub, fireplace, observation deck. Comfort, privacy, a touch of luxury, yet easy access to towns. Cook, meals, driver available at extra cost.
TURRIALBA VOLCANO ACTIVITY DOES NOT IMPACT VOLARE. The volcano is WEST of Volare and Turrialba Valley. Winds carry ash to San José, away from us.
Volare is in the middle of Costa Rica's true Adventure Capital, yet only 1:45 to the center of San José. Costa Rica's adventure crown jewel - the Pacuare River, Class IV white water, is year round action close to Volare. Canyoning, mountain biking, real jungle, bush whacking, Costa Rica's most active volcano - all close to Volare, all available as private adventures or join group tours.
When you arrive we have prepared for you fresh fruits, fresh milk, coffee, tea, sugar, spices, olive oil, condiments -- ready for your use.
Volare is super comfortable for six people for sleeping. We can add a single bed in the office... not an "official" sleeping room but works for kids.
Inside Volare our guests have access to all kitchen equipment (toaster, blender, coffee grinder, coffee maker and Italian Moka coffee pot, microwave, high capacity refrigerator and freezer, high capacity convection oven), to high speed internet, office equipment (including copier, scanner, FAX machine, printers) and telephone for local calls (no charge) plus international phone calls available at cost, plus office supplies (paper, glossy photo paper, pens, notepads, file folders, stapler, paper punch etc). Volare is the ideal place to continue running your business or staying in touch with your home or work.
Interaction with Guests
Franklin and Yamilet are the backbone of Volare. Their job is to make everything comfortable and easy for you ... as they have for me for 12 years. Cleaning the house, doing your laundry, replenishing the firewood, cleaning the fireplace, light duty shopping for milk, eggs, bread ... all part of their services.
Franklin can go with you to guide you to some hidden places - waterfalls and a crystalline swimming hole, hiking trails and nature areas, mountain bike routes. For an extra cost of $70 Franklin will meet your international flight in San José then drive you in your rental car (if car rental agreement has included him in Additional Driver insurance), through the mayhem of the city and the unmarked country roads getting to Volare. He also knows where to stop for good grocery shopping.
Yamilet is an excellent cook of local cuisine, and (for extra cost) she will prepare meals and picnics for you, or serve as your sous-chef, then clean up after meals. She believes making food is an act of love. If you don't speak a bit of Spanish we also provide a bilingual person to make logistics work smoothly.
We offer fixed price meals which you can order once in Volare or when you confirm reservations.
Volare's neighbors often go to work on horseback. It is a small rural community but on a good paved road (national route 230) and close to Turrialba, the city below the deck (10 minutes away) and San Jose, the capital, 1:45 away. Right next to our entrance is the soccer field and grade school (for 25 students) and church. Next to the school is a small supermarket -- fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, local cheese, bread, soft drinks, beer and some canned goods (but no frozen products or fresh meats). We're on a paved road, with beautiful views and little traffic, and Volare is remote from the road -- no one from the road even knows the house exists. Front entrance has remote control gate. During the day our trusted gardener and housekeeper are nearby, and a bilingual person is available if English is needed.
We highly recommend a rental vehicle.. preferably 4x4. It is not necessary for Volare, but for Costa Rica roads in general.
Public bus stops in front of the property (6 to 8 buses per day) and a taxi to Turrialba costs about $10. Volare has secure parking in the carport. Franklin is available to drive your rental car (if you have added him as an additional driver on your rental car insurance). A fully bilingual and educated bilingual guide, for nature or for adventure, is available for $145 per day.
Other Things to Note
A lot of guests LOVE to have meals prepared for them by Yamilet, my housekeeper. Eat on the deck overlooking the city, and not worry about driving in the dark from a restaurant. Yami makes fresh and local cuisine with a flair for (non-spicy) preparation... fish, vegetable, beef, pork, pasta, or vegetarian or vegan. Ask for a menu list and prices after you complete the reservation.
Volare has appeared in a British TV series on unusual homes. The driving concept of Volare:- COMFORT. TRANQUILITY. PRIVACY with some amazing adventures thrown in.
Pets welcome (please let us know in advance). NON SMOKING house. If guests include children under 12 please let us know (so we put away some fragile items). There's a whole list of "How To" that comes when you rent the house -- run the hot tub, lighting the fireplace, arranging for massage in Volare, descending the fire pole, hiking to Volare's waterfall, plus much more. We will send you the link to download the files once you have confirmed with AirBnB.
WASHER-DRYER: One batch of 11 pounds of laundry per day is without cost; additional batches are $10 each. Laundry equipment is only operated by Yamilet.
HOT TUB: LIMIT 6 people at a time!
BRIDGE TO HOT TUB: one person at a time. DO NOT INTENTIONALLY SWING OR SWAY WHILE IN THE HOT TUB OR CROSSING THE BRIDGE - it will create a wavelike movement which may cause structural damage.
TIME IN THE HOT TUB: Guests are invited to use the hot tub to the limit of one tank of fuel per day, which lasts about 3 hours with hot water (or all day if using only tepid water). Additional heating requires changing the large propane tank, which is $45 per tank added. Ask Yamilet or Franklin to change the tank.
TOWELS: we provide both high quality towels for use in the house, plus cheaper towels to take to the beach or hot tub. Please respect the use of the towels.
BROKEN EQUIPMENT: Please let us know if something gets broken or is not working or not clean. We do not charge for normal breakage like a glass or a plate, but we need to charge for excessive breakage or damage caused by fire, negligence, or misuse.
VERANDA AROUND THE DECK is useful for putting plates while eating, but we do NOT recommend sitting on the veranda. An earthquake, even a minor shake, is enough to knock you off and it's pretty high to the ground.
I built Volare because I thrive when living above the clouds. My home incorporates all the passions that have driven my life -- flying (I am balloon pilot), horses, dogs, and most of all, friends who come share my adventures with me.
But then I fell in love. And now I spend a lot of my time on our farm in northern Costa Rica with my new family. I want Volare to inspire other people the way my home has inspired me and many of my friends who visit.
