Interaction with Guests
Franklin and Yamilet are the backbone of Volare. Their job is to make everything comfortable and easy for you ... as they have for me for 12 years. Cleaning the house, doing your laundry, replenishing the firewood, cleaning the fireplace, light duty shopping for milk, eggs, bread ... all part of their services.
Franklin can go with you to guide you to some hidden places - waterfalls and a crystalline swimming hole, hiking trails and nature areas, mountain bike routes. For an extra cost of $75 Franklin will meet your international flight in San José then drive you in your rental car (if car rental agreement has included him in Additional Driver insurance), through the mayhem of the city and the unmarked country roads getting to Volare. He also knows where to stop for good grocery shopping.
Yamilet is an excellent cook of local cuisine, and (for extra cost) she will prepare meals and picnics for you, or serve as your sous-chef, then clean up after meals. She believes making food is an act of love. If you don't speak a bit of Spanish we also provide a bilingual person to make logistics work smoothly.
We offer fixed price meals which you can order once in Volare or when you confirm reservations.
Volare's neighbors often go to work on horseback. It is a small rural community but on a good paved road (national route 230) and close to Turrialba, the city below the deck (10 minutes away) and San Jose, the capital, 90 minutes away. Right next to our entrance is the soccer field and grade school (for 25 students) and church. Next to the school is a small supermarket -- fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, local cheese, bread, soft drinks, beer and some canned goods (but no frozen products or fresh meats). We're on a paved road, with beautiful views and little traffic, and Volare is remote from the road -- no one from the road even knows the house exists. Front entrance has remote control gate. During the day our trusted gardener and housekeeper are nearby, and a bilingual person is available if English is needed.
Public bus stops in front of the property (6 to 8 buses per day) and a taxi to Turrialba costs about $10. Volare has secure parking in the carport. Franklin is available to drive your rental car (if you have added him as an additional driver on your rental car insurance). A fully bilingual and educated bilingual guide, for nature or for adventure, is available for $145 per day.
Other Things to Note
A lot of guests LOVE to have meals prepared for them by Yamilet, my housekeeper. Eat on the deck overlooking the city, and not worry about driving in the ark from restaurant. Yami makes fresh and local cuisine with a flair for (non-spicy) preparation... fish, vegetable, beef, pork, pasta, or vegetarian or vegan. Ask for a menu list and prices after you complete the reservation.
Volare has appeared in a British TV series on unusual homes. The driving concept of Volare:- COMFORT. TRANQUILITY. PRIVACY with some amazing adventures thrown in.
Pets welcome (please let us know in advance). NON SMOKING house. If guests include children under 12 please let us know (so we put away some fragile items). There's a whole list of "How To" that comes when you rent the house -- run the hot tub, lighting the fireplace, arranging for massage in Volare, descending the fire pole, hiking to Volare's waterfall, using the washer and dryer, plus much more.
We spent 4 days at Volare and it was an incredible experience from the moment we got there. We were greeted by Franklin, Yami and one of the neighbors Auxi(who speaks English). Auxi was great for showing us around the house and introducing us to Franklin and Yami. From there Franklin and Yami took great care of us. Yami was there to clean and do laundry every morning which was really an added and unexpected bonus. With it being a bit wet while we were there it was nice to get everything clean and dry before having to pack up. She also cooked two dinners for us which were delicious and some of my favorite meals while in Costa Rica. I wish we had her to cook every meal. Franklin was also a great help. He took us on a hike to a couple local waterfalls and lead the way with his machete. The house itself is gorgeous, and the views are breathtaking. We also did canyoning and rafting while we were there which were set up by Tucker. This was a big help because she made sure she recommended places that would give us the best experiences. The people we dealt with were very friendly and really did show us a good time. If/when I come back to Costa Rica I would definitely stay here again.
These pictures do not do Volare justice, as it is a unique and unforgettable experience. My girlfriend and I had traveled to Costa Rica for 10 days, and we began our trip at Volare to celebrate our anniversary. From San Jose we took a bus to Turrialba which took 2 hours, then took a cab to Volare with Tucker's directions which took about 15-20 minutes. We were amazed by not just the incredible view and awesome architecture of the house, but also by the wonderful staff at Volare. Ligia, who speaks fluent english can help you with any of the activities you may want to do while in Turrialba, she helped us set up horseback riding, and she is always available in case there is an emergency or you have any questions. Yamilet who is the chef and maid comes everyday to clean, and is absolutely a tremendous cook, we wanted to take her back home with us! She made dinner for us(at an additional cost) for two nights, both which were fresh, healthy and delicious, and we even had leftovers that lasted us for lunch the next day! We've brought back a few of her recipes to our home in NYC. There is also Franklin, who sets up the fireplace every morning, and can also bring you to the waterfall on the property and point out where you can see the sloths and other beautiful wild life Costa Rica has to offer right in the backyard of Volare! Also, there is the neighbor Alexandra who is fluent in English and such a pleasant person to be around. She is an artist and also runs a dog shelter, her dogs are all super friendly and adorable! Alexandra helped give us advice for the rest of our trip in Costa Rica, even after Volare she continued to help us in any way she could and got us out of some pinches! My girlfriend and I joke that she became our mother in Costa Rica! There are a few nearby restaurants, we went to one of them up the road and it was delicious and very affordable. The hot tub on the property is awesome, and you will never get sick of the 180 degree view of Turrialba. We could not have spent our anniversary at a more romantic and perfect place. We have decided that returning to Volare is inevitable. Volare will make you feel both right at home and in perpetual paradise, you will never want to leave I guarantee it!
Worst part about the stay was having to leave!! Loved the location to nearby adventure activites! The staff helped us in every way and made the stay more relaxing than it allready was!
What an amazing place! So beautiful, with so much to do. Would come back here again 100%!! Tucker was great with instructions and so helpful. Absolutely, loved every minute of it!!
THIS IS AN AMAZING PLACE. Regardless of who you are, I GUARANTEE that your experience will be as magical as mine. First, the view is OUTSTANDING. It overlooks Turrialba and the surrounding mountains. During the day, you have a clear view of the area. During the night, you see lights of the town and stars. It is absolutely beautiful. The hot tub is a sole standing structure away from the house and is absolutely amazing. We sat in the hot tub during one of our nights and could not believe the view of the town and the stars.
Aside from the house, the people managing and helping at the home are among the friendliest people I've met. Alexandra, Frank, and Frank's wife were all SO friendly. They showed us around town, cooked us meals, did our laundry (without us even asking them!), and connected us with local hiking tours.
I could not have imagined a better place to stay in Costa Rica. If I were to return to Costa Rica in the future, I would stay at Volare the entire time. I wish that I stayed longer here during my trip. It was a surreal experience. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Volare is absolutely amazing! The pictures do not do it justice. I've never seen a home like this - it is truly in the clouds. The view is spectacular. Tucker, Alexandra, Yami, and Franklin were fantastic hosts - friendly and helpful when you needed them, but we still had plenty of privacy. I highly recommend this home for an authentic Costa Rican vacation. MUSTS: take a river rafting trip on the Pacuare, sit in the elevated outdoor hot tub and watch the sunset, do a zip line tour, have Yami cook a meal for you, light a fire and sit on the balcony and watch the clouds float by you, and drive up to the Turrialba volcano.
SUGGESTIONS: Rent a 4x4 vehicle - the roads are fun (winding turns up and down mountains). Try to arrive at Volare before dark - it is tough to find the first time, if you can't see, but Tucker can easily direct you if you get lost. Stay for at least 5 days - there is so much to do we wish we could have been there longer.
This place is beyond beautiful, the pictures don't even do it enough justice. Tucker's staff who help maintain the property are wonderful, kind and helpful in all aspects. The house was very clean with plenty of towels and linens all around. Stereo system for your music, the wifi is good as well. There are rainforest and mountain tours, and White water rafting nearby as well. Be warned, if you are highly afraid of bugs this could pose a problem for you because at night all the flying insects like to head towards the light in the house so don't leave the doors open. But they are only moths and light seeking bugs I only left with one mosquito bite and I think that was from the rainforest tour. Overall this place is absolutely incredible and Tucker was beyond a great host.
About the Host, Tucker
I built Volare because I thrive when living above the clouds. My home incorporates all the passions that have driven my life -- flying (I am balloon pilot), horses, dogs, and most of all, friends who come share my adventures with me.
But then I fell in love. And now I spend a lot of my time on our farm in northern Costa Rica with my new family. I want Volare to inspire other people the way my home has inspired me and many of my friends who visit.
