Our private peninsula on Prairie Lake has been a Northwoods destination since the 1950's when Mallard Point Resort opened. Although the resort days are over, the cabin tradition lives on. In addition to these two cabins, the owners reside here full-time as well. The cabins have been completely renovated into cozy guesthouses and are stocked with everything you need for a lakeside getaway with 330° views of quiet Prairie Lake.

The space
We are still taking reservations and following recommended cleaning guidelines. Parties and events are not allowed at this time.

Our two cozy, lakeside cabins sit side-by-side along the lakeshore. They feature natural light all day long, with high ceilings and large windows that look out onto the water. The water is so close that guests have said it feels like being on a houseboat. Each cabin has a loft with a quality king-sized bed and two double beds in the lower level bedroom. Together the cabins sleep 8 people. Cabin 1 sleeps 4 and has a dining table for 4. Cabin 2 has a slightly larger living and kitchen area with a dining table that accommodates 6 and has beds for 4. It’s is a combination of modern and rustic, with warm, natural wood finishes, an open living and dining space, and a kitchen and bathroom stocked with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We have Roku TVs to connect your streaming services, and fast, reliable WiFi. The cabins are winterized and available all all year so you can curl up by the fireplace and warm your toes after skiing or with a good book after a long week of work.

What we love about it

We have the best of both worlds- we're on the lake, but close to town. It's just 10 minutes to downtown Grand Rapids. Being located on a peninsula also means that we have lakeshore on either side instead of neighbors!

The Point was a resort in years passed and it still has a resort feel to it today, just smaller, slower-paced and more peaceful. Each cabin has its own firepit and charcoal grill in front, but otherwise all outdoor are shared. You can expect to see other guests or our family enjoying the beach, grilling out, or fishing on the dock.

The surrounding area has exceptional XC ski trails within 15 minutes. We also groom our own circuit on the lake. You can access snowmobiling trails directly from our property via the lake.

Prairie Lake is quiet and has little boat traffic, perfect for paddling and fishing. Visit the rocky gorge, reminiscent of the Boundary Waters, at the south end of the lake, take in sunrises and lake breezes on the dock, and enjoy watching beavers swim past and listening to the loons sing. The water is shallow and gradual along our little sand beach, perfect for small children to splash and build sand castles.

Where you’ll be

Grand Rapids, Minnesota, United States

Although the expansive lake views give the feeling of seclusion, we're just five miles from shops and dining in downtown Grand Rapids to the south and less than 10 miles from the National Forest to the north. Entrance to the Taconite Trail and Mesabi Trail, one of the longest paved trails in the nation, is less than two miles away. Access to numerous, well-maintained cross-country ski trails within 15 minutes. Direct access to the nearest snowmobile trail via the lake. The bait shop, convenience store and public boat access are just a half mile away.

Welcome all! I'm excited to share my place with you. Until moving to the Northwoods of MN, I worked as a landscape architect in the USA, Australia, and Pacific Islands. Now I focus on creating a great experience for my guests, caring for my awesome kids, and following my real passion of designing and building furniture. I love adventures big and small, from sailing to remote Pacific islands to jumping in the lake in November. I believe in thoughtful living and I try to reflect that approach in our rentals.
