We're located in central Austin. It's just a 7-minute drive to 6th Street (downtown) and a 3-minute drive to UT. It's nestled in the charming and historic Hyde Park neighborhood where beautiful trees line the streets. The house was built in 1938 and, interestingly enough, was the neighborhood doctor's office and house.
As our guest, you'll have the second floor all to yourself. You'll enjoy a private room with a ceiling fan and large windows that lets the light pour into the room. In our quiet neighborhood, you'll have a wonderful night's sleep on our double bed that's topped with a special cushion for extra comfort. You'll also enjoy a full bathroom, including a shower and tub, that's adjacent to the bedroom. We'll also provide you with a comfy robe.
You'll wake to freshly ground coffee or tea, and downstairs you'll be able to enjoy a breakfast nook that looks onto the backyard along with a dining room, living room, half bath, and kitchen. Our back porch is also a nice place to take in your morning coffee or wine in the evening. It's well shaded by an arbor covered with a lady banksia rose bush.
You can be anywhere in Austin in a 15-20 minute drive tops. We're only a few blocks from several city bus lines, and a cab ride is about $13 to downtown. There's some fantastic food within walking distance from the house, such as Kome, Your Mom's Burger, Tamale House, and East Side Pies. There's also a great coffee house called the Flightpath Coffeehouse, and there are some fun bars in the area like Barflys and The Tigress Pub. A nice grocery store and pharmacy are just a few blocks down the road, easily within walking distance.
Our neighborhood is very safe and it's a really lovely place to walk or bike around. There's also a neighborhood pool and tennis court a few blocks away.
To make your stay super fun and smooth, we'll provide you with a guidebook about our home, neighborhood, and city along and share our book about the best sights to see in Austin. We're also happy to make recommendations to suit your taste.
About the hosts: John is a native Austinite and software developer with an entrepreneurial spirit. Jamie has lived in Austin for 14 years and researches criminal and juvenile justice issues. We travel every chance we get but we love returning to our quirky, fun, and laid-back Austin. We also love meeting new folks and sharing Austin's charms -- both well known and local favorites -- with others. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
We had a great stay with John, Jamie and "Seeches" [their sweet little dog] in their lovely home. After four long days exploring and experiencing a sample of what Austin has to offer, it was so good to return to our colorful and cozy room with a comfortable bed and know we were going to have a peaceful sleep.
John and Jamie are the most accommodating people; easy and interesting to chat with .They are very considerate of their guests' needs and make every effort to make sure you are at home. They know Austin exceedingly well and have compiled a handbook with lots of suggestions.
Bryan and I used the metro bus to get around with two main lines (#10 and #7) within a short walk to downtown and UT. Also within a short walk is a cluster of restaurants [three of them in particular are well respected in the city] and a great bakery where Jamie buys her guests' pastries for the morning. The Hancock Center on 41st St/Red River [a shopping center ] has a grocery store, etc. and an Avis/Budget rental car office at the Sears Auto Center. We found it extremely convenient for picking up a car for our last 24 hours and dropping it off at the airport.
Jamie and John's home is very clean, charming, and comfortable. They also have a patio and back garden with a table and chairs for relaxing which was an added bonus to the Austin experience. We would definitely choose to stay with John ,Jamie and Seeches again.
If you have goings on at UT Jamie and John's place is the perfect base, just minutes away! Even though my daughter and I had a small snafu with the arrival date, Jamie and John were more than accommodating and adjusted accordingly. They made us feel so welcome even though they were hosting dinner guests the night we stayed. Clean, comfortable accommodations and delightful hosts.
Excellent location, very clean and tidy, beautiful home. The hosts made me tea and brought me water to my room upon arrival and began making a lovely loaf of bread for the morning. I had to attend a very early meeting and unfortunately passed up on their kindness. Lots of hot water, good climate control. They have a nice puppy who is not a nuisance at all. Easy in and out, close to main roads, well-located for a visit to UT. High praise. You can't go wrong with the place. They give you lots of room and privacy. It was perfect!
Jamie and John are awesome hosts! They welcomed us warmly and made us feel totally at home. We had the second floor of their beautiful house to ourselves, including a beautiful bathroom. Thanks!
John and Jamie are excellent hosts. Awesome home and neighborhood. The accommodations were great and very close to everything. We would definitely go back!
Our stay at John and Jamie's place was great. Their house is in an ideal location, which made it very easy to get around Austin. We were able to park in the neighborhood. As for their hospitality, John was always ready to answer questions or give recommendations. We visited various food places that he suggested and left feeling very happy (and stuffed!). Additionally, there was coffee and pastries left out for us in the morning. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend their place!
Wonderful stay. The room was clean and comfy and the hosts were great! Very friendly, had coffee and breakfast pastries ready for us each morning, and gave us tons of great recommendations for our first trip to Austin.
Jamie and John are the bestest (grammar error included) hosts, warm, interesting and efficient. And discreet. And warm. Did I mention interesting? And Siges the dog is adorable and funny.Their house is lovely and cosy, and they know how to respect your privacy while never let you feel isolated : staying there was a real total pleasure. They give their guests a pamphlet (right word?) to let them know the house rules, the map of the area and plenty of tips about shops, eateries and things to do/see in Austin, a very useful list that I used again and again. I fell in love with the city, and John and Jamie are for sure a part of why.
this was a very comfortable homey cozy place to stay. the hosts are lovely people. they make great coffee in the morning :) I have frequent migraines so often need to retreat to quiet solitude and this B&B was perfect to do so in. it was close to some shops & many good restaurants, good sushi and tacos near by. nice to be away from the hustle of downtown core and packed hotels. their dog is a sweetie too. transit was challenging at times with using taxi cabs during Austin City Limits festival ,so I'd recommend renting a car, or maybe using car 2 go they have that which i'll probably use next time. the hosts provided lots of information pre trip so I knew what to expect which was very reassuring as well.
Jamie and John's house is located in a quiet, safe, neighborhood. Parking was easy, the drive to downtown fairly quick, and close to the interstate highway which is useful if you are planning on any regional travel, like to the Hill Country. Hosts were easy going, friendly and flexible with our arrival and departure times. The room was comfortable to be in with a number of chairs and tables that did not crowd the room but rather provided guests with multiple surfaces on which to place their belongings. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well every night. The room has an air conditioner and a ceiling fan, so you are be able to adjust the temperature in the room to your liking. Overall, a positive experience. You will not be disappointed if you stay with Jamie and John.
