Minutes from Downtown w/ Priv. Bath

House - Private room · Red River St, Austin, TX 78751, United States

The Space

We're located in central Austin. It's just a 7-minute drive to 6th Street (downtown) and a 3-minute drive to UT. It's nestled in the charming and historic Hyde Park neighborhood where beautiful trees line the streets. The house was built in 1938 and, interestingly enough, was the neighborhood doctor's office and house.

As our guest, you'll have the second floor all to yourself. You'll enjoy a private room with a ceiling fan and large windows that lets the light pour into the room. In our quiet neighborhood, you'll have a wonderful night's sleep on our double bed that's topped with a special cushion for extra comfort. You'll also enjoy a full bathroom, including a shower and tub, that's adjacent to the bedroom. We'll also provide you with a comfy robe.

You'll wake to freshly ground coffee or tea, and downstairs you'll be able to enjoy a breakfast nook that looks onto the backyard along with a dining room, living room, half bath, and kitchen. Our back porch is also a nice place to take in your morning coffee or wine in the evening. It's well shaded by an arbor covered with a lady banksia rose bush.

You can be anywhere in Austin in a 15-20 minute drive tops. We're only a few blocks from several city bus lines, and a cab ride is about $13 to downtown. There's some fantastic food within walking distance from the house, such as Kome, Your Mom's Burger, Tamale House, and East Side Pies. There's also a great coffee house called the Flightpath Coffeehouse, and there are some fun bars in the area like Barflys and The Tigress Pub. A nice grocery store and pharmacy are just a few blocks down the road, easily within walking distance.

Our neighborhood is very safe and it's a really lovely place to walk or bike around. There's also a neighborhood pool and tennis court a few blocks away.

To make your stay super fun and smooth, we'll provide you with a guidebook about our home, neighborhood, and city along and share our book about the best sights to see in Austin. We're also happy to make recommendations to suit your taste.

  • John and Jamie welcomed us in from a Texan storm and we had a great stay. Very welcoming hosts, lovely house, excellent night's sleep and great breakfast! We enjoyed a meal in a local Japanese restaurant recommended by John. Oh and their little dog is gorgeous! Tanks John and Jamie.

  • Lovely home and sweet couple. Room and home were exactly as pictured. I felt very welcomed and safe. It was my first time to rent thru airbnb and highly recommend it to all.

  • This was my second stay with Jamie and John. As I planned my trip to Austin, my sons found a bnb closer to them and more convenient. But my memories of my stay at this bnb were too good to stay anywhere else. It felt a little like coming home. When you meet the Gardners you will know what I mean. Instant friends, happy people, who share their home generously. I had all the privacy I wanted and then great conversation too. My favorite part, beside the comfy bed, is their canopied patio with blooms in the spring. Hours of reading, writing, and just doing nothing fed my soul. If you can't tell, I just love this bnb and Jamie and John too.

  • This place is great! It's close to bus stops and locally owned restaurants/bars. John and Jamie are wonderful hosts who welcome you into their home and always have coffee ready in the morning. Highly recommend this bnb!

  • John and Jamie were great hosts! They have a really beautiful home and we enjoyed roaming around their neighborhood. They made a guidebook that they sent us with cool places to eat, drink and listen to music in Austin. I thought that was a really nice touch! I would definitely stay there again.

  • This is a charming old house with two generous people inviting you to their home. The area is quiet and layed back. Buses around the corner take you downtown. A beautiful bedroom helps you sleep like a queen. When staying in the house you have the second floor on your own, and are free to use the kitchen and the little breakfast room with a view to the garden. Better than staying in a hotel, I promise.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed my stay with John and Jamie at their home in Austin!

They are both very friendly, warm and welcoming. Their home has a warm feel to it and a nice layout. The upstairs bedroom is comfortable, private and quiet with its own bathroom. I enjoyed starting my days by sitting on their spacious back porch drinking a cup of the great coffee they prepare every morning. Seeches, their adorable dog, would sometimes keep me company and make sure I had everything I needed ☺

John generously loaned me his bike to get around Austin during South by Southwest. This was my first Airbnb experience. It were a good find and I would definitely recommend this Airbnb!

  • We had a great stay with John, Jamie and "Seeches" [their sweet little dog] in their lovely home. After four long days exploring and experiencing a sample of what Austin has to offer, it was so good to return to our colorful and cozy room with a comfortable bed and know we were going to have a peaceful sleep.
John and Jamie are the most accommodating people; easy and interesting to chat with .They are very considerate of their guests' needs and make every effort to make sure you are at home. They know Austin exceedingly well and have compiled a handbook with lots of suggestions.

Bryan and I used the metro bus to get around with two main lines (#10 and #7) within a short walk to downtown and UT. Also within a short walk is a cluster of restaurants [three of them in particular are well respected in the city] and a great bakery where Jamie buys her guests' pastries for the morning. The Hancock Center on 41st St/Red River [a shopping center ] has a grocery store, etc. and an Avis/Budget rental car office at the Sears Auto Center. We found it extremely convenient for picking up a car for our last 24 hours and dropping it off at the airport.

Jamie and John's home is very clean, charming, and comfortable. They also have a patio and back garden with a table and chairs for relaxing which was an added bonus to the Austin experience. We would definitely choose to stay with John ,Jamie and Seeches again.

  • If you have goings on at UT Jamie and John's place is the perfect base, just minutes away! Even though my daughter and I had a small snafu with the arrival date, Jamie and John were more than accommodating and adjusted accordingly. They made us feel so welcome even though they were hosting dinner guests the night we stayed. Clean, comfortable accommodations and delightful hosts.

  • Excellent location, very clean and tidy, beautiful home. The hosts made me tea and brought me water to my room upon arrival and began making a lovely loaf of bread for the morning. I had to attend a very early meeting and unfortunately passed up on their kindness. Lots of hot water, good climate control. They have a nice puppy who is not a nuisance at all. Easy in and out, close to main roads, well-located for a visit to UT. High praise. You can't go wrong with the place. They give you lots of room and privacy. It was perfect!

About
My wife, Jamie, and I are native Texans, but we don't wear cowboy boots. We love to travel, and we like to live like the natives as much as possible. We take advantage of all the live music opportunities in town whenever we get a chance, and we love classic Austin restaurants and discovering new and different ones. We enjoy exploring the natural wonders in and around the city, and we appreciate its quirkier side. We had such a great experience using Airbnb as travelers in Europe, we decided to continue as hosts when we returned home. The best part of hosting is getting to know new people, and we enjoy helping to make fellow traveler's visits to Austin as smooth and fun as possible.
