Bertha lives in a nice quiet middle class neighborhood. I felt very safe walking around. She is a thoughtful hostess. If you want to talk she is friendly and helpful. If you want some space she never intrudes. She helped me look for a long term apartment to rent, and answered many questions about the town. She walked me to the bus stop, which is only a few blocks from her house and told me which bus to take to get the the center of town. There is a bus every 15 minutes. I would like to add that Bertha has the most well-behaved dog I've ever met. Paloma is clean, friendly and has perfect manners. If you want to pet her, she loves it. If you want to read or check your email she sits in her chair and looks out the window. If you say her name one time she comes running to be petted. She never jumps on you or barks. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay with Bertha and Paloma.
This was my first experience with airbnb, and even at this point I'm not sure if I'm to expect only a room or bed to sleep on, or something more; that is, to be treated as a guest in one's home. I'll write this review from the perspective of the former.
Bertha has a bedroom and private bath available, although, private bath is a misnomer. Its Bertha's bathroom that she uses daily, but for guests she uses the bathroom downstairs. Unfortunately, she doesn't move any of her stuff out of the bathroom, which leaves no room for your stuff. Same in the bedroom, which she uses for storage and chachkis, leaving no shelves or storage. For 4 nights I lived out of my suitcase. The bedsheets are threadbare with plenty of pills (bobbles or clumps of fiber). They need to be replaced. I also discovered hairs on the sheet, which I always check on a "new" bed. Having done enough washes in my lifetime, I understand that hairs can "stick" even through a wash. I just hope that's the case here.
My last day, I left the house about 5:30 PM to head downtown. Unfortunately, Bertha was walking her dog Paloma at the time. When I returned about 10:00, I discovered I was locked out. After banging on the door, she finally came down, explaining she thought I was in my room asleep. No apology forthcoming.
The washer-dryer is very helpful, and Paloma is a delight for dog lovers. I got 2 cups of coffee in 4 days, no food.
I asked Bertha for a ride to the bus station, which she provided. She remained in her car, while I got my luggage and said good-bye. A very cold parting indeed.
Betty is a charming host, and being a teacher of spanish herself,is a great help for those of us who speak some, and invaluable if you don't speak much spanish at all. Her dog, filoma,is all I ask for in a dog.....friendly and quiet. The condominium is also friendly and quiet. It worked very well for me. It is a little far from the center,so if you are only in San Miguel for a couple days,it might not be the best. But I took the bus regularly ,and it was easy for me,and just took taxis back at night,50pesos. Her place? A very good value for the money.
Bertha was a sweet heart. She was extremely welcoming and hospitable like no others. The room was nice and clean just as what we expected. She was always helpful when we asked for suggestions and advice. The location was also great, not too far from the bus station and downtown. If you happen to go out at the same time Bertha goes to work, she offers you a ride to her workplace, which is actually close to downtown San Miguel. Paloma, her dog, was another memorable impression you would get from staying at her place. Highly recommended to anyone going to San Miguel !
