An extraordinary two-story antique royal suite, encrusted with museum-quality carved plaster, original mosaic and decorative painting. Authentic and spectacular.
Lonely Planet ranked it in Top 5 Author’s Picks of best places to stay in Fes; Frances Mayes called the Pasha Baghdadi Massriya “an arranged marriage of art and geometry”; and Conde Nast Traveller magazine says it’s "the Medina apartment to rent."
A remarkable two-story antique royal suite from 1880, the Massriya of the Pasha Baghdadi is the most beautiful Massriya we have found in Fez. Decorated with simple traditional furnishings, the Massriya’s romance comes from its original architectural detail: the suite is encrusted with museum-quality carved plaster, original mosaic, and decorative painting. Authentic, quirky and romantic.
* Two master bedrooms, including rooftop jewelbox "Menzeh" encrusted from mosaic floor to painted ceiling with museum-quality decorative detail, opening onto the terrace and city view from bed. Separate Menzeh is accessed through outside staircase.
* Small Garden Room on main floor contains ornate traditional fountain, small traditional domed Hammam bath designed for 4 people, and a shared bathroom.
* Large Salon with high original painted ceiling and cascading antique carved plaster.
* Rooftop terrace with medina view.
* Excellent accessible location in medina.
* Tiny kitchenette in Garden Room.
* Dramatically lit, with simple traditional furnishings.
* Down comforters, Italian linen and Egyptian cotton sheets and towels.
Other Things to Note
Due to guest feedback in May 2014, we have added a brand new air conditioner in the upstairs bedroom, and it cools nicely in the hot months now.
The apartment was exceptionally beautiful! The tiled floor and walls, carved plaster decorations, and beautiful ceilings were a feast for the eyes! I slept in the upper room, where the sunlight comes in through the colored glass windows early in the morning - wonderful!
The rooms were tastefully furnished, the beds were good, and the sanitary facilities were very good. There were plenty of towels, blankets, etc. A space heater was available but I found it not to be needed.
There is a small corner with a sink and two hot plates for a kitchen. In a pinch, you could probably cook there. We used it for making tea.
You can also go onto the rooftop terrace, where you have a great view across the Fes medina. On a couple of occasions we enjoyed the quiet terrace after walking through the busy medina streets.
Our host was absolutely wonderful. He was very responsive, picking us up at the the appointed place right on time. We had a rental car, and he helped us find a good place to park it outside the medina, but still not too far from the apartment, which would have been impossible for me on my own. When we arrived, he also explained the basic layout of the medina, which was very helpful as initial orientation.
The WiFi worked perfectly - I even had reasonable reception from the upper bedroom, which surprised me.
One point - the stairs are a bit narrow and steep, particularly going to the upper room. If you have problems negotiating stairs, you might want to contact the host before booking.
My wife and I had a great stay in the Antique Royal Suite. Thank You!!
The host was very quick to respond to all of my enquiries, both before and after I had made my booking.
The suite itself is absolutely amazing and in great condition. In my honest opinion I feel that the experience of staying in such a beautiful and well kept property exceeded the price that I paid to stay in such a property. I almost felt guilty paying the price that I did.
I loved the intricate details in the apartment. It was like stepping back to another time, and it was truly unique. It therefore also came as a suprise to find that the suite also had great wifi with no connection issues during my stay (I've found this to be an issue in other Moroccan properties).
The shower/bath was also in the unique style of a hammam, and made for another particularly unique experience. There was hot running water and the apartment was well heated (my stay was in winter).
The second bedroom up by the roof terrace really gives new meaning to a "room with a view". Waking up and looking out onto the Medina is something I won't forget any time soon.
I hope to stay here again one day.
Thank you for a wonderful stay.
The suite was a great place to stay in Fes. While it's easy to get lost on your way to most places in the medina, the suite is located just steps away from one of the main streets, so we never had issues finding our way back. Despite being in the middle of the medina, it was very quiet, which was a nice bonus.
The tiling and plaster carvings are absolutely amazing. We enjoyed unwinding while looking over the amazing details every evening.
We already had Moroccan SIM cards, but the host did offer us a mobile phone if we had otherwise needed one. The rooms are in a building shared with another tenant, and the upper bedroom requires walking in the shared hallway, but this wasn't an issue for us.
The hosts were great, arranging for pick up and drop off at the train station. I'd recommend booking guides and other services separately, though, as we booked an official guide for 1/3 of the price quoted to us by the host.
This apartment is a perfect example of why airbnb is a much more rewarding experience than staying in a hotel. The location and authentic details of this apartment were amazing. The hosts were very welcoming and easy to communicate with beforehand. They even picked us up at the train station at midnight. I highly recommend and hope to go back to Fes and stay there again.
This beautiful building certainly has the wow factor. If you like mosaic floors/walls and high wooden ceilings then get yourself to this beautiful oasis. The host made themselves available for any questions and took any stress out of the unfamiliar. The location is perfectly in the heart of the medina and a short walk to restaurants and shops. It is true that the beds weren't that comfy, but I was too distracted by the walls! There's a fridge and small cooker too. I didn't realise that the second bedroom is not attached to the main room (it is upstairs through the main building) so this would be perfect if you are two travelling couples/friends - it also meant that I didn't use this room. I'd highly recommend this property and hope to come back one day.
We were terribly late in arriving into Fes by train. But our host still arranged to have us picked up from the train station and transported to the Medina. We were then met and guided into the Medina and to the Riad. The Riad itself was very authentic and quite charming. Despite the lateness our host made certain that we had supper. The next day, our host also arranged to have a guide to take us through the Medina and all it's sights. We only had two days in Fes but they were filled wonderful sights and purchases.
We stayed three days. The place is beautful, as the pictures suggest. It is however not suitable for 4 people. There is a separate bedroom on the top floor using a shared staircase, but that room has no aircon and gets very hot. The terrace is shared as well and is used by the neighbours sometimes to dry grain, thereby blocking all access. The beds are small and very hard, not comfortable. The couch in the livingroom is not suitable to use as bed given the shape and hardness. So all in all, it is a very pretty place but expensive for two people. Also you will have to choose between airco noise and outside noise. The neighbors are friendly but live with 10 people in their apartment and do create a lot of noise as well. real marocvon experience.
