A cozy (450 sq feet) two bedroom, with a new double futon in the front room and two single beds in the back bedroom, one is a loft. Full bathroom and kitchen, small but functional, the place can easily sleep 3 people. We have 2 sweet, quiet cats.
This great 4th fl. apartment in a 80 year old tenement building has southern exposure with large windows, high ceilings, a murphy dining table that seats 6, 1 brand new full size futon bed and two single beds, one is a loft, plus two comfy, long living room couches that a small or spartan person could sleep on. Very convenient location just steps from many subways and buses, with hundreds of great restaurants, theaters, bars, galleries and museums close by, and a large park just 5 blocks away. Full bath and shower, Air-conditioner, TV, and radio. New Time Warner Cable & Internet connection, eat-in kitchen, nice view, quiet neighbors, what could be better? Big supermarket one block away, Whole Foods two blocks away, laundromats w/in 1 block, dry-cleaners across the street and many convenience stores w/in steps. We do have two cats, that do not meow, that you need to be ok with and please be aware that this is an old NY building and as such will not be a pristine and sterile environment, but more of a shabby-chic pad, like an old friend, not your basic Motel 6. Conditions are also much improved since we got some negative reviews, please scroll down and you will see many more positive than negative, give us the benefit of the doubt, you will not be disappointed. We have changed the lock cylinder and now have a very reliable wi-fi connection. And the elevator is working perfectly! We are steps from an uptown or downtown express bus stop, and three short blocks from the F train, and there are tons of taxis passing the building every hour of the day.
I am available by text, e-mail or telephone 24/7 and I stay 1 block away when I have guests, so I can easily resolve any issues that may come up within minutes or at most w/in 24 hours.
Very convenient location just steps from many subways and buses, with hundreds of great restaurants, theaters, bars, galleries and museums close by, and a large park just 5 blocks away. The area also had many good food markets, dry cleaners across the street, Citi-Bike station across the street, movie theaters two blocks away, and famous music venues in the area. You can see the new Freedom Tower from our windows and have a decent sunset view from the fire escape.
Yes, we are 3 short blocks form the F train, across the street from the Select (or normal) Bus Service with many taxis passing 24/7. Plus there is a Citi-Bike station across the street where you may register to rent a bike daily, weekly or monthly, and our city is perfect for biking, mostly flat with 1000s of miles of new safe bike lanes. There are also many bike shops in our area with helmets for sale, or you are welcome to borrow ours.

Maya's place in the East Village is awesome and the cats are very mellow and easy going. The apartment is located in a great area where you can walk to all the cool bars and restaurants in the area. Maya is a great host, she was very, very accommodating to our needs.
It was great trip and great flat. Very nice place with lots of bars, restorants and shops closely. Homelike and atmospheric flat. Maya was responsive and tried to help in all difficulties. Cute cats that became our friends.
Thanks Alexey, you guys were great guests, glad you enjoyed the place and my sweet cats. I'm going to do a trouble-shooting session with Time Warner today and get to the bottom of why people are having trouble logging on, that is intolerable when I think of how much they charge me monthly! Happy Olympics! Best from Maya
Staying in Maya's place was a frustrating experience. The most disturbing asset was the gas smell. The pitons did not work. The flames went out all the time. And the tube of one of the burners lay lose in the stove. And the hood was in the inside covered with fat. She advised me to leave the windows open. And it was freezing. She did not call the super, I asked him to have a look at the stove and he saw a dangerous situation in a very old building with hundreds of tenants. How about responsibility for other people? A new stove was promised. Her rude ex appeared the next day to turn at least the gas off. Not a guy to have a discussion about savety with. Not to mention a new stove of course. But then I was already fed up with the dirty apartment. I spend 2 days trying to get things organized as they should and people walking in and out. A tiny litterbox for 2 grown cats always in sight in the bathroom. She never told me if the AC might work, It was constructed in the bedroom. She threw a blanket on it to leave the cold outside and later I saw the AC was situated in a plastic window! She claimed to have installed a new lock but it did not work. For handling the tv and the wifi you need to be a technician. And why does she have to come to the apartment to bring catfood, it should be there. And for the record, I never woke her up at 4 in the morning. If bohemien and artsy means dirty, yes, with a pile of rubbisch in the couch. In the apartment smoking was allowed, and yes, I had 2 sigarets at the window out of pure stress. You are not going to smoke in an apartment smelling of gas. My son offered to have a meet and greet with Maya before I came to NY, as he always does, and I told him it was not neccesary, as Maya communicated well. And he wouldn't have noticed the things I myself encountered the next days. He organized a hotel for me, where it was safe, clean and warm. I don't understand Maya's insulting judgement over the relationship I have with him, visiting twice a year since he lives in NY for 8 years. In short, the apartment is dirty, cold in winter and it smells of gas. I will never stay there again. There are 2 pro's: the neighborhood and the cats. For me this apartment was a last minute booking. If you want to hire on airbnb, start in time, when there are decent apartments available.
I did not realize that there was a problem with the stove until Fleur told me about it. As soon as she did I called the super immediately and spent an hour making a arrangements to get someone to come the next morning to shut off the gas according to the guests's wishes, so I'm not sure why she says I didn't call the super, she sat next to me while I had about 5 phone calls with him. A new stove was promised to me and it could have been arranged, but they couldn't bring it the very next morning, things like that have to be ordered and one usually has to wait at least two days. If she had stayed I would have gotten her a new stove asap. I had originally suggested leaving the windows cracked open for a bit for fresh air, but then the temperature went down and she complained of being cold so i naturally suggested closing the window since you certainly cannot get the place warm with windows open. The gas smell was so faint one had to stand with face down by the burners to detect it and I live there so I know it isn't even detectable otherwise.
No one walked in and out, without her previous knowledge and permission. I asked her before I came if it was okay that I brought more cat food up, I didn't expect her to buy it! She had made a last minute booking and I had about 3 hours to clean the place and didn't have time to replenish the cat's food before she checked in, but I did all the other cleaning, changing linens, cleaning kitchen, bathroom and floors with vacuum and mop. I may have missed inside the stove hood! I don't know where else she would have me put the cat's litter box??? The bathroom seems an appropriate place. In the apartment letter on the airbnb site, it plainly tells all details about the AC, it is brand new and works, but why in the world would one need that when its freezing outside? It is NOT in a plastic window! As for the lock, it can be temperamental, I'm not sure why, I DID have the cylinder replaced in Jan of 2013 at a cost of 150.00, but it is still a bit tricky, but she didn't even try to learn how to use it, just left my place (website hidden) and WIFI is not so tricky, you only have to follow my written instructions and everything will work perfectly! I don't have time to respond to all of these ridiculous accusations, my place is not dirty, Fleur what do you even mean by rubbisch in the sofa?? If you are spending too much time inspecting all the cracks and crannies to see if can find a speck of dirt or dust somewhere, then my place isn't for you, and if you had taken the time to actually read the description on my site, you would have seen that, instead if sending me emails about how great it's going to be. You don't know that those emails go to my phone as a text and yes they DO wake me up at 4am! As for my rude ex, yes he is rude, that's why he is my EX and also why I had suggested that you be out when he was scheduled to come and turn off the gas. I admit I have no business referring to your family relationships, but you also were a bit of a harsh judge of me. I did my best to please you and fix the stove issue, which is a serious matter, but maybe this place was just not right for you, but I did my best to make you happy and you still felt the need to be insulting and (website hidden): One cannot have cats without having a litter box somewhere.
Very warm and cozy atmosphere! Fantastic location! Maya is very helpful and intelligent host! Only one thing - the lock… But we find a right solution!
It's a very convenient neighborhood, if you want nightlife and good restaurants in walking distance, this is it! its a bit noisy at night, but also a very good new york experience.
The three of us had a fantastic week staying at Maya's place in New York. The apartment is great - it's in an awesome location, and will make you really feel like you're living in your own NYC apartment. If you're like us, you won't want to leave..... It's not in a modern, posh building, so if that's what you want you should probably be in a hotel anyway. We recommend visiting the bar next door, the Edge - a great local (don't worry, no bar noise in the apartment). Maya was great, no problems with communication or meeting to show us round the apartment etc. The cats were lovely too, so unless you really don't like cats they'll be nice to have around. Everything was comfortable, normal NYC noise levels in the front room and quieter in the back room. Wifi was sweet, air conditioning worked fine, and the apartment is well set-up for anything you want to do - cooking at home if you fancy it, coffee in the mornings etc. If we lived in New York, we'd want to have a place like this...... Some day!
Maya's apartment and hospitality are both as wonderful as her two kitties. Great location. Cozy apt.
Maya was a fine host. Would be lucky to stay again.
