This guest-house formula offers our guests the advantages of having a spacious home away from home, shared with a selected few, plus the comfort and privacy of their own space. Steps away from La Sabana Park.

The Space

One of 5 bedrooms in an elegant 2500 sq. ft. apartment, this standard room offers a single bed, with new orthopedic mattress and quality bedding, plus a work-desk, an arm-chair, and wide windows with courtyard garden view. (See our other listings)

We're two flights up from ground floor, in a small attractive apartment building, in a safe, central, up-scale neighborhood. There is in-door parking with remote-controlled garage entrance, and camera-equipped intercom system.

Guest Access

Outside the bedrooms, all areas are accessible to guests: massive fully-equipped kitchen, bright dining room and living room that both open to covered balconies, library, computer, free wi-fi, telephone for local calls, central work-station, storage in case of return.

Interaction with Guests

We are a retired Canadian couple, who have their own residence on the same floor, so are always present to receive guests. Having been hotel owner-operators for a decade in Costa Rica, we offer all the travel and re-location assistance that may be requested, while guaranteeing the privacy of our guests. Their sole comfort is our goal! Pura Vida Costa Rica!

The Neighborhood

The residential neighborhood is one of the most prestigious of the capital, broad, tree-lined streets, well-guarded and well-kept. Two blocks from the largest and most animated of the city's urban parks, offering all kinds of sports and fitness options. Walking distance to all conveniences: grocery stores, pharmacies, clinics, banks, cafés, restaurants, gyms and spas, as well as the park's contemporary art museum.

Getting around

Situated on several public bus routes to shopping malls and downtown, near the urban railway line; a 10 minute drive to the domestic airport; 20 minutes to the international airport; taxi stations on several corners around the park.

Other Things to Note

The Residence is dedicated to the serious, the quiet, and the respectful. Perfect for extended stays, for work, for study, for convalescence.

  • Great location which is in a quiet neighborhood in San Jose yet still a 20 minute walk from downtown. After staying in a hostel in the jungle it was nice to come to such a nice apartment with a comfy bed and hot water!

  • A superb property with superb hosts!! For a pre arranged fee, I was met at the airport with a placard and a smiling face which is always nice when you are coming into a country where you do not speak the language.
The property is close to the Stadium and to a fruit/grocery shop, an ATM and
    Mc Donald's if you choose!
I can't speak highly enough of the hosts and their property.
Thanks guys for all your help and caring.

  • Wonderful friendly and knowledgeable hosts! The communication prior to arrival was excellent. Alexis helped to book a day tour and James supplied "taxi" service to the airport when I was ready. (much easier than calling a cab and for the same $25 fee). Because I was traveling alone I appreciated their willingness to talk to me about Costa Rica and to give suggestions about where to go and what to see. Top notch service in this very clean B & B! (My bath was cleaner than a 4.5 star hotel I had stayed in the night before). Delightful residential neighborhood was safe to walk around after dark, yet close to the bank, restaurants and a grocery. No A/C needed here because of the marvelous constant breezes. Reading on the balcony was quite enjoyable, other guests were interesting, and the WiFi was fast. Breakfast items are supplied to fix on your own schedule. James and Alexis were attentive, making sure that I was comfortable and had everything I needed for my stay. Five thumbs up for super service! I'm glad that I chose La Paz!!

  • I visited San Jose, Costa Rica from June 3 – June 10 and lodged at La Paz Bread and Breakfast. My first night was spent in Room #1. The host, James, informed me that the room is utilitarian, and that I would likely be more comfortable in the bigger room #4. I decided to try out Room #1 for the night anyway. Nothing wrong with the room, except that being used to a queen-sized bed, the double bed was somewhat uncomfortable for me. I moved to the bigger room the following day and stayed there for the rest of my trip. My review of La Paz as follows: THE ACCOMODATION It is an upper floor apartment with no elevator. It may not be convenient for handicapped traveler. For the able-bodied ones, the walk-up is fairly easy. The stairways are wide with railing supports. Internet connection is adequate for (website hidden) and surfing. The common living room is very spacious, with high ceiling, bright and well ventilated, with comfortable sofas facing a big screen TV. There are four dining tables and chairs. This area always feels clean and shiny. The kitchen is also very spacious. No worry about getting in each other’s way. The fridge is big and adequately stocked with basic breakfast stuff – Bread, Milk, Juice, Eggs, and Butter. Coffee, Tea, cereal, salt and sugar is provided in the counter beside the stove. These supplies are replenished continuously. The kitchen was always clean during my stay. With the renter’s cooperation, cooking implements, plates, glasses and utensils are washed and left on the draining tray after each use. THE LOCATION Transportation: It is located in a residential area two blocks behind a main Avenue. fronted by a very tall and big Bank of Nova Scotia building. The other side of the avenue sits the Estadio Nacional. Bother landmarks ensure that you’ll find your way home, if you ever get lost. The bus to downtown sports the sign “Estadio Nacional” and can be taken at the stop a few meters from the Bank. Bus coming home is a little complicated. The only stop I know of for sure is the one at the corner of Avenida 2 and Calle 1, (email hidden)i from downtown to La Paz seems to vary. It cost me US$10 for the short ride. Bob, another guest said it cost him US$5. Food and Stores: A McDonald is located just across the Bank building. Next to it is a Pharmacy/Convenience store. A few doors down (email hidden) – Fruits, Veggies, Wine, Beer, and Pops etc. Two blocks to the left of the Bank is a Chinese restaurant – El Dorado. Not bad eat but somewhat more expensive than Canada or US. Further down, maybe two or three blocks is Rosti-Pollo – a Mexican Taco, Chicken place. So overall, good, quiet, convenient location. THE HOSTS James and Alexis were very good and helpful hosts. They worked the place efficiently and unobtrusively. Alexis actually has...

  • Spacious elegant appartment with several guest rooms and all the amenities you need. I just stayed there one night before my return flight as the airport is very easy to reach. James was superfriendly and helpful.
    Thanks for the hospitality!

  • Wonderful hosts, both very helpful, knowledgeable and experienced in the hotel business and have been in the area for several years. I stayed for a week but happened to choose a week where 2 concerts took place, (the stadium is very close to the B & B) and a company party next door one evening so a bit noisy. The B & B is kept very clean but the arriving and departing of guests daily, the neighbors downstairs (this B & B is on the top floor of an apartment building which shares the building with 4 other neighbors) it got a bit too noisy for me at times. That is the only complain I have about this place but it was all out of the hosts' control. Everything else was great

  • James & Diane endeavored to make my stay in their comfortable San Jose home as productive and restful as possible. The residence has the feel of a small boutique hotel: it's run professionally and with impeccable personal attention from the hosts. The room is tastefully decorated, without any unnecessary distractions, and I found it quite easy to concentrate and work in my room when not socializing with other guests. This is my first choice for accommodations when in San Jose. Thank you James & Diane!
