One room guest apartment with kitchen, 6 doors from the beach, one block from the Venice fishing pier. The apartment is small but very efficient, usually quiet & comfortable for two. There is a new 14" microfoam mattress getting rave reviews!
Bed on a bright day (duvet covers vary). Bed is now a 14 inch microfoam mattress. To the rear & right: table, chairs, closet, wall heater and TV.
Free-standing (detached) 1 room guest apartment with kitchen & small private gated yard just 6 doors from the beach & Venice fishing pier. The apartment is small (220 sq ft inside, 100 sq ft outside) but very efficient, usually quiet & comfortable for two (there is one bed). Please note the size; the images & floor-plan show it exactly, which is small by American standards. Shops, neighborhood grocery stores, local farmer's markets, restaurants & Venice's historic canals are all in easy walking distance. Venice has different 'zones' from 'crazy noisy' near Windward Ave. to 'fairly mellow' near the fishing pier. The apartment is in the fairly mellow zone, but just 1/2 block from Ocean Front Walk which, in summer, is door to door entertainment (you can look up Venice Beach Oceanfront on the great_public_spaces website). The rest of the year OFW makes for a great long walk with a parallel bike path. Bike rentals are nearby.
The hallmark of my hosting style is the offer of privacy. I am easy to reach and available if you need anything but, as travelers, my husband & I value privacy so that is what I try to provide.
We keep the apartment open to rent & for home exchanges when we travel, as well as visits from family & friends. It is efficiently outfitted with everything we could think of from our experiences as travelers and home-exchangers. As guests have inquired or requested, we have added amenities.
The kitchen includes a European sized fridge (10 cubic ft) with freezer,an oven w/a 4 burner cooktop, an electric kettle, toaster, coffee bean grinder, single-cup drip cones, a french press, a microwave as well as all kinds of cookware & utensils.
We provide a blow dryer, an iron & ironing board. We have various travel books & magazines listing local activities inside the apartment.
There are fresh sheets, extra pillows, wash cloths, bath & hand towels, as well as beach towels, large and small boogie boards (1 ea.), a beach umbrella & beach chairs.
The flat screen TV is very small but includes a DVR (for recording) and a subscription to HBO (as well as On Demand services).
Pets pass through the property, but the apartment has always been pet-free.
No smoking inside or in the courtyard. It's too close to our home. No pets or animals allowed; even service animals. This is not the place for heavy partiers to stay as its part of our home.
Please note that there is NO parking space with the apartment. Street parking only. You can always find parking, but how nearby is variable depending on the time of year and day of the week. Venice is THE public beach for one of the largest cities in the world, so on beautiful weekends and summer beach days parking nearby can be challenging. Buses run frequently on nearby Pacific Avenue and Washington Blvd. to various locations in Los Angeles.
Please send a profile, request or questions through the "Contact Me" link before actually booking. I'll respond quickly and, if you've decided, click the "Book It" button. Thank you for looking!
We have a patio with table and chairs if guests would like to use it. We access our cars and bikes via the patio, so it is not strictly private nor do I clean it as I do the apartment. There are plenty of hand brooms around to sweep the dust away, which you are welcome to do.
Interaction with Guests
I will interact with you as much or as little as you like. Unless I hear from you, I will leave you alone. Please don't hesitate to let me know of any concern you have, no matter how small.
This is a friendly neighborhood. Our street is one block long. Permanent residents all know and watch out for each other & each others pets and children. Neighbors can be helpful in a pinch, especially if you tell them you're a friend of Barbara's.
Other Things to Note
Please check my online guidebook, which I add to or modify from time to time. I'm really picky about where I would recommend eating but there are plenty local eateries I don't list, with options that may be fine with you.
Please send a note with your request, so we have some idea who you are. The apartment is an extension of our home, but you may have as much privacy as you want. Often, we do not see our guests at all. We are friendly & available, but it's your call.
-No smoking & no pets. Please don't smoke in our courtyard or deposit cigarette butts in the apartment. No partying. It's just not our style. Please stay elsewhere if that's your plan.
-Please keep sand outside, as much as possible. Our drains are 100+ years old & there is no way to extract sand from drains.
-Please wash your dishes before you check-out.
-Please don't use white towels to wipe-up dirty stuff. I provide black hand-towels for that. I know it seems like common sense, and yet I have good reason to repeat it here!
-No parking spot comes with the apartment. Parking is not hard to find unless it's summer or a beautiful weekend. If you come to visit Venice, summer +/or beautiful weekends are the best times to stay put & do just that! Otherwise, on-street parking early in the morning & during the day, most of the year, is fairly easy to find. Everyone has always been able to find parking; it's just a matter of how close it is.
There is one queen-size microfoam bed which is the most comfortable bed we've ever owned & is good for a couple. We will give you a change of linens and towels every 5-7 days, or on request, if you are renting while we are in town.
Barbara's place is a real gem, quiet and right near the Venice pier but just a short walk along the foreshore to all the area's craziness. We were so comfortable there, the studio is set up really thoughtfully and uses its "diminutive" amount of space well. We felt we could have stayed a while; the kitchen is fab and kitted out for those who like to cook, while little things like extra beach towels, a beach bag and an umbrella in case of rain made our whole stay very comfortable and easy. Barbara and Judd are also super warm and gave us lots of privacy, while maintaining easy contact. All in all, a great experience.
Barbara and her husband were very welcoming and gave great suggestions for what to do around the area. The place is extremely tidy and cute, and definitely in a prime location. The trip was enjoyable and we would definitely stay again.
We loved Barbaras private beach apartment. This was our first time with airbnb and we enjoyed our stay very much. It is a prime location!! The beach is 2 minutes away! An the area felt hip and safe. Everything was just exactly as described and looks like in the pictures you see on here. We travelled as a couple and the apartment just had the perfect cozy size. We even felt that it was (a little bit) bigger than it looks on the picutres. The apartment was tidy and has pretty much everything you need when you go on a little vacation, incl. shampoo, hair dryer, beach towels, beach chairs and so on. The kitchen was super helpful.
We met Barbara when we arrived and she was very nice and welcoming. Communication was excellent, quick and easy. Even though she and her husband live next door, they give you all the privacy you want. We would definitely recommend this place!
We also had no problem finding parking near by. Thank you again Barbara for beeing such a professional and nice host!
Barbara's private studio was lovely, and Barbara was a great host. Her description and photos were perfectly accurate-- especially the part about the location being so close to the beach!! Barbara was very responsive, and was present to the degree that I asked her to be (which was relatively little). We had a relaxing stay and will definitely look up Barbara's listing if we are in LA (website hidden)-- others have mentioned the plane noise. It woke me up very briefly one night, and the noise ended quickly. I am a somewhat light sleeper, but I never needed the ear plugs that Barbara provided.
Barbara was a great host. She was very accommodating and quick to respond to any questions she had. Communication was excellent. The space itself was beautiful as well, very clean and had everything we needed.
Space is very close to the beach and a few blocks down from the boardwalk. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay while checking out the area.
The location is very close to the beach indeed and is on the quieter side, which is a good thing in my opinion. Barbara is a wonderful and professional host. Instructions given were comprehensive. The room and bathroom is a little small but this has been made known.
We felt very welcome. The apartment is separate from the house so we didn't see much of our hosts but when when we did they were very gracious and helpful. This place really couldn't have been better. She had everything you could possibly need. The kitchen was perfect. We went to Whole Foods(right down the street) and made meals in the apartment which saved us some cash! We were right down the street from the ocean and a block's walk from restaurants. Get fresh squeezed juice at the cow's end! So delicious. We were so happy and impressed with our stay!
We are both academics and artists. We live in the small house directly in front of the apartment. I am from DC/MD and attended Georgetown before transferring to UCLA (many years ago!). My husband is from Manhattan Beach and got his MFA from Cornell. He teaches at USC. We both adore California and we travel near and far as often as possible. We use our apartment for friends, family, foreign exchanges & airbnb rentals. We consider the apartment an extension of our home, albeit a very private one, & hope that visitors also feel at home.
