We stayed in Sugar Shack 1 for a week, before moving into Sugar Shack 3 for a further 3 weeks. It really is a Studio with kitchen, dining table & bed all in one room. There is really nowhere to relax, other than the bed and because of this, we would only recommend this for a short stay. That said, the property was very clean and the kitchen provided everything we needed. The bed was extremely comfortable & the bathroom was good. We loved all the Beach provisions which Kelly made available to us-beach towels, beach chairs, cooler, snorkels/fins & Boogie Boards. We really didn't expect such a variety of "Toys!" We made full use of them all. Further facilities included a small Weber barbecue. We didn't meet Kelly in this our first week, but were fortunate to meet Kim. He made sure that all was ok for us & he supplied us with fresh Kona coffee beans & told us to help ourselves to papaya, avocados & mac nuts. We decided that we had really landed in heaven. During our stay we also met Adam the farmer & Paul his friend who seemed to work from dawn 'til dusk tending to the variety of "crops". Making the booking was incredibly easy and Kelly responded to all my questions as soon as she was awake!! (allowing for the time difference between Hawaii & UK) We really enjoyed being on the grounds of a working farm. There was such a delightful friendly atmosphere.

My wife and I had an excellent stay at the Sugar Shack! Kelly and Kim were extremely helpful during our visit and kept us well caffeinated with their homegrown coffee and homemade banana muffins. We feel like we found a hidden gem on the Big Island and had a great time for the week we were there. My wife especially enjoyed the garden on the property. Kim stopped by one day to drop off some snorkeling gear for us and gave us some background on the art of growing Kona coffee. The kitchen has a stove, pots, pans and dishes for eating in when you want. All in all, it was a wonderful location we hope to visit again some day. - Brad and Georgia

The sugar shack delivered everything it promised: secluded private location, excellent finishes, authentic Hawaian experience, and comforts not found in most hotels: washer/dryer, kitchen, outdoor firepit, snorkel gear, etc etc. It's a great place if you're looking to stay in one spot for a few days and just relax. Beyond the property itself, the thing that distinguishes my visit was Kelly's excellent communication before and during my stay. It's truly rare for someone to be so responsive -- unless you're staying in a hotel, so perhaps it's the best of both worlds. Note that the shacks (like most of the rest of Captain Cook) are about 1500ft+ above sea level and about 16 miles to Kailua Kona, so if you're planning regular day trips to other parts of the island you'll almost definitely need a car and some time: things are very spread out on the island and traffic can be a bit pokey at points. I biked KonaShack a few times (not an easy ride and not recommended for casual cyclists without road bikes) but more often than not found myself taking advantage of their reliable Element-for-rent, especially b/c the sun sets promptly at 6pm in October.

My husband and I are in our mid-50's. We grow our own label 100% Kona coffee August-Jan. We've been building soil over time, and apply the good stuff to our farmland. There is a small wood shop where we use hardwoods and craft custom wood flooring. On occasion, you will see us in the garden when not attending our children and farm animals. Husband+Wife of 28+yrs, parents of 3 children. We share our love of communication and hospitality, and welcome world travelers. This is the 'Land of Tropical Waters, Plentiful Fruits, Fragrant Flowers, and Funny Animals.' Come and join us!
