About this listing
Make yourself at home staying at “The Pennrich” during your visit to beautiful San Diego. Located in the central neighborhood of Hillcrest, famous for its diverse population, gay friendly, and home to many bars, restaurants, shops, and transportation, my studio apartment is located above a garage with a private entrance and has no common walls. You can enjoy sitting on your private balcony and enjoy a leisurely breakfast or your evening happy hour. Inside the unit you will find a queen size bed, queen size futon, a full size kitchen stocked with basic cooking supplies including a french press coffee maker, toaster, blender, and a nice selection of coffee, teas, sugar, sweetener, and creamers, TV, DVD player (I have a selection of movies you may borrow, or you can rent movies from a nearby Red Box machine). There is a Mexican marble bathroom with large pedestal sink, bathtub(towels supplied) , and European shower head. There is plenty of natural light, wonderful natural ventilation, cathedral ceilings, track lighting, along with hardwood, tile and marble floors. In the evening you can enjoy the ambiance of a gas burning fireplace, or sit out on the balcony by candlelight. To be honest, airbnb's photography makes my place seem larger than it really is, but it's far from feeling claustrophobic having such high ceilings, even in the bathroom. There is plenty of free street parking in front of the studio should you have a rental car. A major bus line is only 3 blocks away which will take you to the center of the city in about 20 minutes, or you could walk there in less than an hour. The world famous San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park is a short 15 minute walk, and you are a short 5 minute walk away from grocery stores such as Whole Foods, Ralphs, Trader Joe's, and a liquor store. There is also a Rite Aid (24 hour pharmacy) within walking distance, as well as close proximity to both Scripps Mercy Hospital and UCSD Medical Center. In addition, no matter what type of food you’re craving, you will be satisfied with your choices of Thai, Mexican, Japanese, Continental, Indian, Mediterranean, and American cuisine within a 10 minute walk, along with a 7 Eleven, McDonalds, Subway, Starbucks Papa John's Pizza, Fed Ex and a Post Office. There is a wide choice of bars within walking distance, including gay, straight, mixed, or wine, where you can dance or socialize. The Alibi, Hillcrest’s oldest bar is 3 blocks away, and each Sunday morning there is a wonderful farmer’s market where you can shop for fresh produce, hot and cold prepared foods, and inexpensive fresh flowers.
Your host is a native San Diegan, and can give you many recommendations of “must sees” in San Diego. Whether you are here to enjoy Pride weekend, the Rock and Roll Marathon, Comic-Con, or any other large event, or just here to relax. I will try my best to make your stay as enjoyable as possible, and hope you will visit us soon. If you find you are unhappy at The Pennrich for any reason, I will be more than happy to refund your full rental costs (minus airbnb's own fees) for any unused nights. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to meeting you in “America’s Finest City” soon!
P.S. I'm sorry, but our property is not suitable for those with children. Babies who are not yet walking are welcome though. I do have a wireless internet connection, but have received complaints about it's strength, so no longer list it as an included amenity. Some guests have had no problems making a good connection though. There is a coffee shop and McDonald's 3 blocks away which both offer free internet service if it is absolutely necessary for you. Please keep this in mind when reserving my space. This is a non smoking rental.
Own entrance gate, and private balcony.
Interaction with Guests
There are only a few short hours per day that neither one of is is at home and on the property should you have any problems or need assistance. We respect our guest's privacy, so will leave it up to you as to how much you'd like to interact with us. We will be more than happy to sit down chat whenever you'd like though, and give you advice as what to see and where to eat. :)
The neighborhood of Hillcrest is quite trendy, very friendly, and always lively, yet quiet during the late night hours when you're ready to rest. It truly offers everything you could possibly want or need.
The main bus line is just 3 blocks away, so access to Old Town, the Fashion Valley shopping center, and the city center are very easy to access for those who don't have access to a private vehicle.

Filbert is an incredible host--great about answering our texts/emailed questions, welcoming & friendly when we arrived, and full of wonderful suggestions and tips throughout our stay. We loved the apartment. It was private & yet had an open, airy feeling because of the high ceiling and abundance of windows. Very comfortable like a home away from home. We liked being able to wake up & make breakfast in the kitchen and eat on the large covered balcony. But if you don't feel like cooking there are plenty of places to dine out. It truly is a fantastic location, a few blocks from stores, restaurants & hiking trails. We fell in love with the Hillcrest neighborhood and felt safe walking around at night. I will recommend Filbert's place to all my family & friends.
So nice spot. Comfortable. Gorgeous. Filbert is gentleness, helpful, respectful !! Me and my fiance had good time!! We recommend this place.
Nick and I had such an awesome time in Hillcrest! Thanks for being so welcoming and accommodating.
It was really nice to have you meet us out front and even have a parking space open, after that long drive. Everything about the studio was comfortable and clean.
It was very apparent that you care about the people who you host in your space. We're so happy we've made this connection and can't wait to come back!
Thanks again :)
This has been our first AirBnB experience and has been a very positive start. Filbert was there to greet us and show us around. Everything was explained or written down for our later perusal. The flat was very nice, clean and cosy. Had breakfast whilst watching several Humming birds entertaining us out in the back yard. Location was in a nice quiet area near Balboa Park. Bus routes were nearby, but we chose to drive into San Diego & parked for $10 all day. Nothing was to much trouble and help was always on hand. Thank you Filbert for a wonderful time in your lovely home. Annie & Mal
An excellent place to stay while in San Diego. Accommodations are perfect and exploring the neighbourhood was fun. Once there, really can walk everywhere for great food and entertainment.
We absolutely loved our time at Filbert's place. Everything was as described (and better), clean, the kitchen had everything we needed, there were plenty of towels and toiletries, you really just have to bring your clothes :). Filbert is a great host that goes above and beyond for his guests. Communication was great and very timely from the beginning which made us feel really comfortable. He gave us some great suggestions for places to see and places to eat. His place is in a great location, close to everything. We walked around and really enjoyed the hip neighborhood and its friendly people. A couple of evenings we had dinner on the porch outside and that was really lovely, it reminded us of our childhood back in Romania.
This was our first experience with airbnb and all I can say is that Filbert set the bar really high!!!
Thank you Filbert for everything! We hope to come back soon!
The place is very good located! Everything is near the apt. and it's in a calm neighborhood! We felt like home because there is everything you need to live.
Filbert gave us some useful tips and he was very helpful before and during our stay!
About the Host, Filbert
I was born in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego and have never left its accepting and diverse culture. I have traveled extensively in our small world, and know how nice it is to come home to a warm, clean, and cozy place at night, whether it be a private home, hotel, or tent. I take great pride in offering you a home away from home which is clean, safe, private. and has what I hope includes everything you need to feel comfortable after a long day of touring San Diego. I can recommend the "must sees" for you to make the most of your visit, and hope that you will leave my city with fond memories, and anxious to return. I also offer you a money back guarantee, so that if you're not happy for any reason with your accommodations, I'll make sure you get a refund for any unused nights. I love my day job working with kids who keep me grounded and young at heart. I have a great sense of humor, and like to spend my weekends just relaxing at home with the Weber grill and some good company. My mother used to tell me that you need only 3 things to be happy: Something to do, someone to love, and something to look forward to. Heeding her advice, I look forward to hosting you soon! Happy travels, Filbert.
