The space
First of all, let us thank you for considering our space for your respite while traveling. With over 900 guests to date, we are grateful to each of you. Please read all that follows:

Whether traveling, passing through, or just craving that much needed getaway, this cozy one room studio is best suited for couples or single travelers who need a safe, centrally located and secluded space while in town for work or play.
Fluff up the pillows and curl up on the soft sheets on the relaxing memory foam queen bed. There is also a comfy love seat/pullout SINGLE bed, making the space perfect for parents, traveling with ONE child, who don't want to rent two spaces.

PLEASE NOTE: As mentioned above, even though there is space for three people to sleep, the SPACE IS BEST SUITED FOR SINGLES OR TWO ADULTS.

Need a long term home-away-from-home? This is the place for you! You will find a comfortable and quiet environment here. Just check out the photos and see all that is available to make you feel right at home.

However, please note that WE DO NOT HAVE A FULL KITCHEN.

But, be assured that your space is totally private. You will see a door at the top of steps. That is the entrance into our home and it is locked for your privacy.

For your peace of mind, please know that, originally built to be used as an art studio, your cozy one room retreat was added on to our home in 1985 and is attached to the rear of our 1923 bungalow. It is NOT a separate building, but it IS a separate space apart from the main house. The wall between the house and the guest space is actually an exterior brick wall that is virtually soundproof.

However, please understand that we do live in our home, so we apologize in advance for any noises emitting from inside the house. We do our best to keep any sounds to a minimum, including any intermittent barking!

BEFORE YOU BOOK: Please go to the "THINGS TO KNOW" section, at the bottom of this listing, to learn about our house rules. This list will help you determine whether or not you want to book with us, as will the FOLLOWING section:

PLEASE NOTE: in order to maintain your complete comfort and relaxation and avoid trash overload, we will personally service your suite by giving DAILY SPECIAL ATTENTION to the following:

1. Hate washing dishes while on vacation? No problem. Just leave your dirty dishes on the tray provided. WE WILL WASH YOUR DISHES DAILY. (The small bathroom sink is not conducive to washing dishes and we don't want you to have to eat off of paper plates and use plastic cutlery! Ewww!)

2. And, though we do not clean up after you or make your bed, we will empty the trash daily.

3. If you want to have clean towels, please leave the dirty ones on the floor. We will replace them with fresh ones for you.

4. In addition to bottled water and a choice of cold drinks, you will have ice in the freezer and adequate space in the fridge.

5. We will restock snacks and drinks daily.

6. In order to not disturb you when we do all of the above, we wait until you are gone before checking the room. But. Just in case, we always knock first.

MORE ABOUT THE SUITE:

Several of the late artist's paintings line one large wall for your enjoyment. (You will find information about her and her work in our welcome/information booklet. Spoiler alert: The artist was Pixie's mother, who made a name for herself painting portraits all over the world!)

With it’s own private and hidden entrance off the courtyard, the room is cozy and inviting. It's large north windows mean that there is no direct sunlight, giving the area an airy, yet warm feel. Wooden beams and a handsome ceiling fan bedecks the 15' high ceiling.

Although the lower windows can be completely darkened with room darkening drapes, the high, tinted windows will always let in just enough light to let you know when morning arrives, but not too much to awaken you. In addition, the lower windows can be easily opened if you are a fresh air lover.

NOTE: There is a sleep mask in the bedside drawer if needed.

Also, please know that we are in the FedEx flight path. Sometimes their landings can be noisy. We also have a train that passes through about a block away and it often likes to blow its whistle to say good morning!

NOTE: We provide earplugs and a sound machine, if needed. You will find them in the bedside drawers.

In addition, although we do our best to keep it under control, there will be some intermittent dog barking from time to time as our neighbors have dogs who like to say hello to Baxter and Bailey (our two fur babies) when they go out to play. (You can see them in the photo gallery.)

On the love seat/sofa you can relax comfortably or curl up with a cup of coffee or tea made in room. (A variety of each is supplied along with a choice of creamers and sweeteners.)

You will find a selection of family games in the corner shelf under the toaster. Enjoy.

Enjoy some popcorn (also supplied) while watching your favorite shows on ROKU/HULU, Netflix, Peacock and Amazon on the large, adjustable wall-mounted Smart TV. A variety of snacks and Oatmeal are also provided.

Your mini kitchen is equipped with a Keurig, hot water kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge, with a small freezer (and ice) and dishes, cutlery and glasses. The mini kitchen is more than adequate for preparing microwave meals or warming up restaurant leftovers.

Enjoy your warmed up leftovers or delivery at the drop leaf table. There, you can also charge your phone and set up your computer to finish that last memo before your business meeting.

Make yourself at home when you arrive. Empty those suitcases into the antique wardrobe and the ample chest of drawers. Ahhh. Just like being at home!

Enjoy the calming spa like feel of the attached en-suite bathroom with adjustable shower head and soft, absorbent towels.

NOTE: There is NO tub. (See listing photos.)

Don't over pack!!!

In addition to plenty of towels and linens, we have tried to include any necessity you might need or may have forgotten. You'll find shampoo/conditioner and body wash in the shower. (There is also a small travel size bar of soap in the medicine chest, if you prefer that over liquid body wash.)

Included in the medicine chest and the cabinet over the toilet, you will find miscellaneous toiletries and feminine necessities.

Next to the medicine chest, there is a wall mounted makeup/shaving mirror! (Pixie's insistent addition!)

Along with a hairdryer, we have also provided an iron and a small ironing board. (Ironing stuff is tucked away in the wardrobe.)

Just outside your private entrance are two lovely, quiet, and private courtyards for your enjoyment (and for vaping/smoking, if needed.) We rarely use them except when we let Baxter and Bailey out to play periodically! (Should the mosquitoes try to visit, you will find bug spray in the medicine cabinet.)

We want you to feel comfortable in the space we have so carefully prepared for you. Relax knowing that the space has been well cleaned and sanitized with fragrance free green products, NORWEX cleaning cloths and according to the CDC requirements. You will find disinfectant wipes in the cabinet above the toilet.

We would also appreciate knowing what you plan to do while in Memphis. It will give us a chance to better accommodate your needs and have some helpful info on hand when you arrive.

On another note; don’t let the deposit scare you. You will not be charged a deposit when you book. The “deposit” is there as a precaution just in case. It is only required if actual damage occurs!

A few more thoughts:

We would like to know a bit about our guests before we meet. After all, you already know a lot about us, which we hope will be part of your decision to choose us. Please tell us a little bit about YOU when you contact us. And. Please give us the names of all travelers as we like to greet all our guests by name when you arrive!

Also, we like to be able to recognize our guests when they arrive. After all, you can see our happy faces alongside our listing. We would love to be able to see your happy face too. So. PLEASE be sure that your Airbnb profile has a recent photo of YOU--not your dog or your house, etc.!

We look forward to seeing and meeting you. See you soon!

Guest access
As mentioned above, you will have full access to the courtyard/patio area which has a sitting area for your enjoyment. (Smokers, since there is NO SMOKING or VAPING ALLOWED in the room, this is where you can sit and enjoy your smokes.)

With it's own private entrance, your suite/studio is attached to, but totally apart from the main house. It is off of a quiet and serene patio which is for your enjoyment.

Though self-check-in is allowed, if necessary, we do enjoy meeting our guests. Therefore, when you arrive (unless very late), please come to the front door to introduce yourself. We will then accompany you to your space and show you around. We want you to feel at home.

PARKING: Feel free to park anywhere on the street in front of or near our house. It is a busy street, so you may feel more comfortable parking on the side street across from us.
In that case, feel free to pull into our driveway long enough to unload your suitcases, etc.

But. PLEASE. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR IN OUR DRIVEWAY!

NOTE: If your car is loaded to the hilt and/or you are just uncomfortable parking on the street, we can offer you a place in our driveway to be arranged after you arrive.
If this is something you will need, please ask in advance so that we can discuss the possibilities.

After we greet you, you’ll walk about 50' down the driveway, through a gate on the way to your private front door. (We will gladly help with your luggage!) There is only one small step to get into your suite.

There is a door, at the top of some steps, that separates your space from the rest of our house. We keep it locked. Therefore, you will have total privacy. Even so, we will still be available should you need anything.

Other things to note
Long term guests are welcome! Please read on...

Nurses, residents, traveling medical personnel: We are only two miles from Methodist University Hospital, about a five minute commute. UTHS is about 10 minutes away and St. Jude will take you about 15 minutes.

Corporate professionals or interns, we are centrally located about 15 minutes from wherever you may need to be.

The studio is great for singles or couples. You will find it cozy, quiet and comfortable. If you don’t want to cook but are content with a MINI kitchen (micro, fridge/freezer, Keurig and hot water pot), then please come stay awhile. (Please note: WE DO NOT HAVE A FULL KITCHEN!)

Check in is anytime 2:00 pm-10 pm. But, we do ask that our guests give us an approximate time of arrival, so that we can be sure to be home to greet you. Late check in is available with prior consent.

Short or long term guests, you are welcome to drop off your luggage if needed. Check in time can be flexible depending on when our last guests have checked out and your specific needs. You are welcome to drop of luggage early no matter what!

You will find information about the Memphis area in your room as well as contact info for the various hot spots/museums/etc., in the area. If you have told us in advance about your plans, we will make every effort to find out as much as possible to help you plan your adventure to the fullest!

We are located a little over one mile from Overton Square. Cooper Young, Railgarten and Central BBQ are much closer and within walking distance, which is a good thing since parking is difficult in those places.

Football fans, the Liberty Bowl Stadium is just a short walk from our house so you won’t have to fight the traffic or pay for parking.

We are two miles from the Pink Palace, and just a bit over a mile to the Children's Museum.

Brooks Art Gallery is just over a mile away located within our peaceful and lovely Overton Park where you will also find the award winning Memphis Zoo.

Graceland is a short (15-20 min) drive from our house. The medical center is about 10 minutes from us and downtown is 15 minutes away. In fact, even the airport is less than 20 minutes from our front door!

You can't find a better location than the heart of Midtown Memphis for just about anything you want to do!

You need to know that, though WE DO NOT ALLOW OTHER PETS, we have two small non-shedding dogs Baxter and Bailey. They will always bark when you arrive, but they are friendly. Baxter loves attention. He loves to lick and will wag his tail eagerly. Once he gets to know you, you'll be a friend for life! Bailey, on the other hand, is a rescue and a work in progress. She’s coy, timid and does everything in her own time.

Please don't forget to read our house rules in the "Things to Know" section at the bottom of this listing before making your decision to book with us.

Neighborhood highlights

Our neighborhood is lovely and safe. We are in the Central Gardens Historical District in the center of Midtown. With most of the homes having been built in the early 1900s, you will enjoy walking through the neighborhood to take in the intriguing variations of architecture.

Built during the time that Memphis was known as the Cotton Capital of the world, our neighborhood is filled with history. Just a short walk west, you will find a beautiful tree-lined boulevard of gorgeous mansions. These were home to those who ran the cotton and lumber industries in the early 1900s.

Our Craftsman style home was built in 1923 in what was probably the first suburb as Memphis began it's eastward expansion. (An interesting side note: I, Pixie, grew up in the home that you will be visiting. It has been in my family since 1951.) We are surrounded by wonderful neighbors who care about their homes and love the history.

Central Avenue is a main street that separates Central Gardens from the equally charming Cooper-Young area to the south. From our house you will enjoy safely strolling and taking in the beauty and charm of ours and the surrounding midtown neighborhoods.

So you can feel more comfortable about your car's safety, there is a street light right in front of our home where you will park. Not only that, it will light your way at night whenever you return after dark. We also have plenty of light coming down the driveway to your own private front door!

My work: We are retired grandparents! (That's not work. It is a pleasure!)
My husband Richard and I are grandparents and we love spending time with all of our eight grands and now, four great-grands...and their parents, of course! We also love to travel. We simply love being together and doing things that give us pleasure. We especially enjoy refurbishing like we did in the area we have prepared for you in our home! When we can travel, we like fun dining adventures, shopping in off the beaten path places, sightseeing in general and learning the history about the places we visit. We don't like crowds or crowded places, but we do like to check out what makes a place buzz. We love to sit and watch people while dining or having a glass of wine. We are easy going, but like to live our lives to the fullest. As for places that we like to stay? That’s easy. We like places like the one we have provided for you to enjoy: Clean, nicely appointed and comfortable with accessibility to sights and good dining, shopping and entertainment. Internet connection is a must and a TV is always nice. We like our morning coffee and the ability to refrigerate and warm up leftovers. All of these details, and more, we have carefully incorporated into our guest area for you. Basically, we like the same things you do. We welcome you. Come. Relax. Enjoy!
