Exceptional check-in experience

Recent guests gave the check-in process a 5-star rating.
The Windy Top Cottage is an old stone building constructed in 1932 by H. L. Bitter, a wealthy Hartford businessman. This area of Granby was a favorite of the Hartford elite for a place to 'summer' in the early part of the 20th Century. The cottage was the quarters for the domestic staff while the family was in North Granby. With an elevation of 970, we offer clean, fresh country air!

The space
Dawn and Ken have refreshed the interior with vintage "pumpkin pine" floors and warm, decorator wall tones. The cottage has over 1000 sq. ft. of living space with the original bath fixtures from the 30s and a huge stone fireplace with propane-fired gas logs There is NO KITCHEN …. No sink, no Stove or Microwave. The Cottage IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN OR INFANTS…the large first-floor great room has a small coffee service area. There is a small refrigerator,
The second-floor bedrooms are spacious and yet very cozy. The home has an English Country House feel with all furnishings provided by Dawn’s painted furniture business: A Girl With A Paintbrush. Flower boxes adorn several windows that overlook an herb and flower garden. The property is accessed by original brick walkways that lead to the private entry door.
The exterior patio out the rear door is covered by an awning, with a fire pit to enjoy. We live in the main house on the property, we greet guests upon arrival.

Guest access
Guests will be able to use the entire building with the exception of the garage bays for their private use. A private exterior patio is located out the back door with benches and a firepit.
Amenities include freshly laundered, soft cotton bedding and towels, bathrobes, hypoallergenic or goose down pillows, cozy sofas and chairs, comfortable carpeting, and rugs. The linen closet has an ample supply of bar soaps, shampoos, a hairdryer
The spaces are accessorized with old framed artwork, mirrors, clocks, and folk art. We offer a quiet, relaxing experience without TV, (but with good wifi internet access) and also offer books, old magazines, and games so you can enjoy a special time with friends or loved ones.
The coffee service provides a toaster oven, an espresso machine, and a Keurig single-cup coffee maker with fresh cream and organic sugar.

NEW: GIV GOURMET COFFEE SYSTEM INCLUDING LOCALLY ROASTED BEANS, PROFESSIONAL GRINDER, TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED HOT WATER POT AND A FRENCH PRESS.

NO KITCHEN

We provide a complete list of emergency numbers in the unlikely event that you would need it.

Other things to note
Windy Top is in the heart of Connecticut's best private boarding schools. 7 of the top schools in Connecticut are located within 20 miles of the cottage. These schools include... Ethel Walker and Westminster Schools in Simsbury; Suffield Academy and Loomis-Chaffee Schools; Miss Porter's in Farmington, Kingswood-Oxford in West Hartford and Avon Old Farms School in Avon, Connecticut.

Neighborhood highlights

Granby is an "upscale", small suburban Hartford community with tons of nearby amenities and located in an area known for working dairy farms, equestrian centers, apple orchards and farm wineries. Our beautiful community also offers self-serve farm stands, homemade ice cream stores, art galleries, country libraries as well as gourmand evening dining establishments.
The Windy Top Cottage is located in an area with breathtaking views of Massachusetts (walk just a little more than a half mile to the amazing Mary Edwards Property) and a 5 minute drive from the best waterfalls in Connecticut! We are surrounded by thousands of acres of hiking/walking trails, a game refuge and several state forests. Our street has huge old oak trees with amazing old stone walls and is a local favorite for jogging and walking. Ask us to send you our "Granby Hiking Guide"....
Connecticut is home to many historic covered bridges, waterfalls and a few ghost towns. See our local guidebook for more details.

Lives in Granby, Connecticut
Dawn and I are an "empty nest" couple with a love for hospitality. We currently own an older Cape Cod home in North Granby, Connecticut. The property includes our stone guest house which we have had on Airbnb since the Summer of 2017. Dawn has a furniture restoration business and Ken has been in real estate sales for over 40 years. We love country antiques and decorating with a vintage style. Ken is involved with the local historical society and has served on the town Economic Development Commission for over 10 years. Please see our Guidebook for many ideas of what you can do when you stay with us.
