Modern guest suite on a hill in Mill Valley's Almonte neighborhood about 5 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. This garden suite with private entrance is located below our home; street parking is generally available nearby. We're located on a quiet street and enjoy views of Mt. Tamalpais from an expansive raised deck that you are welcome to use during your stay. It's a short walk down the hill to catch a bus to SF, and about 1.5miles to the shops of downtown Mill Valley. Easy access to the MV-Sausalito bike path. We're also near to a stop for the Marin Airporter (a direct shuttle to/from SFO airport).
The sleeping alcove/platform bed has a comfortable queen-sized mattress with high quality linens and down pillows & comforter. There is ample closet space for hanging items and a dresser available for use. The breakfast table overlooks our lower gardens and the suite is equipped with a compact fridge, microwave, and electric kettle + coffee and tea supplies. There are dishes and basic kitchen items provided so you can enjoy a peaceful breakfast before heading out for the day, bring home take-out for dinner, or relax in the evening with a glass of wine. No kitchen. We have a reliable, high-speed WiFi network, and the suite is furnished with a 30-pin iPhone compatible alarm clock/speaker. Hard-wired USB ports (2) in the wall for charging devices.
If you're a cyclist (road or mountain), hiker, or runner there are excellent options right from our house and we have plenty of maps - enjoy nearby Stinson Beach, Muir Woods, Marin Headlands, or Mt. Tamalpais. A visit to Pt. Reyes makes for a nice afternoon drive or scenic bike ride (~30 miles each way through the farmlands of West Marin). If you're more interested in the sights of the city, it's a scenic trip via the Sausalito ferry, an easy connection via bus, or a short drive to the Golden Gate Bridge. We're also within easy reach of the Napa/Sonoma wine region by car (very limited public transit in that direction). If you aren't in the mood to explore, then feel free to enjoy our expansive deck or our terraced hillside yard.
This guest suite is below our living area. We have recently (Jan2013) insulated the ceiling/floor in between, so there is greatly reduced noise transfer between the two spaces and increased warmth in the guest suite. Even so, you will probably hear us moving about at some point during your stay. The ceiling is somewhat lower than standard height so it is best if you are not extra tall. With the insulation project, there are no longer open beamed-ceilings and we lost another 1/2" in overall height - but a good tradeoff nonetheless! :)
We do have a dog who is occasionally in the yard when we are home, but is always indoors when we are gone.
Also, we live on a hill so there are several steps to & from the guest suite. These are irregularly spaced and sometimes moist from fog or rain. The garden suite is NOT a good choice for guests with decreased mobility.
If you are not familiar with Mill Valley, it is easiest to plan a first arrival in daylight. Our streets are winding, hilly, and narrow - many visitors find them challenging to navigate, especially at night. Do look at a map rather than relying on a GPS device for your initial arrival.
A little info for first-time visitors to the SF bay area:
- We are located in Mill Valley. This is very close to SF, but not actually part of the city. In fact, we are across the Golden Gate Bridge from SF, in Marin County (also called the "north bay"). It is less than 10 miles to downtown SF from our house, but takes longer than you might expect with the bridge and city traffic. Many guests stay with us to enjoy the green space and beauty of Marin (trails, paddling, Mt Tamalpais, Muir Woods) but still with easy access to the city for some sightseeing there. If you are planning to spend your entire visit in SF, you may want to consider finding a place to stay right in the city.
- There is excellent public transit between Mill Valley and SF, and adequate transit around Marin County. The most convenient/frequent schedules run M-F, and directed at commuters. Weekend schedules require some planning. There is no late-night service to & from SF, and taxis quickly get expensive if they have to cross a bridge.
- There is little to no effective transit directly between Marin and other parts of the bay area (i.e. east bay, etc). You generally have to go through SF and this makes for a long trip. BART does not service the north bay at all.
- SFO is convenient to reach via transit or driving. The Oakland airport is less convenient by car, and difficult to get to by public transit from here. There are door-to-door shuttles but they are fairly expensive.
** Please note that to keep some flexibility for ourselves & visiting family/friends, we do not accept reservation requests for the distant future. We usually open up the calendar for the few upcoming months only. If you're considering a stay beyond that period, check back within that time-frame for availability **
The pictures accurately reflect the space. It was clean and the snacks were great. Great place to stay.
What a peaceful place to stay !! This was our first stay at an Airbnb rental - what a perfect experience! From start to finish communicating with Cheri was a delight. She was very quick to respond and very well organized before us getting there with all the detailed information. The unit itself was IMMACULATELY clean; A basket with healthy and very yummy snacks and sturbucks coffee welcomed us and the provided folder with a list of great nearby restaurants and sightseeing recommendations, clipper guest cards etc. was better than any travelbook you can get in a bookstore.
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay at your place (and thanks for the borrowed hairdryer Cheri!)!
cheri and andrew are really kind and helpful in conversation and preparation of the room: a lot of information, maps, ... and also tea - coffee - snacks: everything was perfect. the studio is really nice - everything is as decribed and works really well: the quality of furniture and electronic equipment is above the standard - the studio is very clean, everything is new and works well. thank you for such a good time, i really enjoyed my stay!
I loved staying here...great space and location!
Cheri & Andrew's downstairs studio was just the right place to rest for a couple of days. It's cozy, clean & comfortable. I felt that we had total privacy and were able to recharge our tired selves.
Everything was nice.
Super clean space. Accurate listing and directions. Cozy bed and everything I needed was provided for; they have great attention to detail. I appreciated the healthy snacks and the ample area information provided in the well-organized binder - I think I have my next trip to the area planned! I will definitely consider booking with Cheri & Andrew again.
This little suite in Mill Valley was clean, quiet, comfortable and affordable. The hosts left thoughtful snacks and information about the area. The bed was comfortable. As advertised, the suite is cozy - a euphemism for small. It turned out that the room wasn't so much small as it had low ceilings, being a basement apartment. The guest I booked this space for was 6'2" and found the low ceilings and low shower to be a bit challenging but enjoyed the quiet, peaceful atmosphere. Probably best for people who are under 5'10".
Cheri and Andrew's suite is tucked atop a cozy hill peppered with all types of gorgeous homes, including many craftsman style residences. Quite a nice hub for staying a few days to explore the areas north of SF, including all of wine country, Sausalito and Marin, and the city itself. The bed was comfy, the room was open and easy to relax in, and the bathroom was immaculate and inviting. Cheri and Andrew's response time was lightning fast, and they were lovely hosts. I will definitely be looking to stay at this suite again.
Cheri and Andrew were great hosts! The place was clean and cozy. We arrived late at night, but thanks to Cheri and Andrew's thorough directions, we were able to find the place without any problems. Cheri and Andrew had a great welcome binder with some great tips and even a parking pass for the local state park. This was my fist airbnb experience and it was great! We would definitely stay here again.
