Joti's oasis in the historical town of Malacca
What a fantastic host Joti proved to be. His hospitality was wonderful. He provided fruit, water & beer in the fridge, home cooked meals, iced water in a bucket for my swollen ankles, laundered towels and sheets, and most memorably of all, he freely gave us the benefit of his enjoyable company in and out of the house. Joti's oasis is truly that.... an amazingly comfortable relaxing space in the heart of Malacca. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend!
Joti's Oasis is located near the Heritage sites in Malacca. A minute's walk can take you to the Dutch Square or to Jonker walk. Joti's a very warm host, he made sure to make our stay in Malacca as comfortable as possible. He arranged for a pick-up and drop-off vehicle from our bus stations. He gave us a brief history of the rich culture of the city. He drew a very useful map of the places to visit and dine, to which I kept even now that we're back in the Philippines. The house also has a lovely courtyard! We will be back at Joti's when we visit Malacca again.
Joti is a very friendly and sociable host, and he's even thoughtful enough to draw out his own map to show us how to get to the places nearby for mostly food. (trust me the map is detailed enough to understand, he used to be an interior designer!)
As for the Apartment, it consisted of just one big room that can hold up to 6 ppl, I like the style and feel (kampung like, open spaces and helps to bonding w family and friends, I feels like im back to the days of camping). There's no door to lock but just curtains to shield for the bathroom. But the whole of the top level will be just for our own use, so there's nothing much to worry about being exposed (unless u have cheeky friends staying with u). But do take note that, there's no lock at the door where you are staying(the large room), but Joti won't go up unnecessary, so you need to have a mutual trust with the Host.
For the first night, my family was not used to the kampung style as it looks a bit rundown, but from second day onwards, they started to get use to it and liked it.
Thanks Joti for having us =)
Remember to bring insect repellant if you are prone to get bites.
Beautiful house in a great location, right next to Jonker street. The place is quiet with a lot of character and Joti is a wonderful host who went all the way to accommodate us and make our stay comfortable.
We got to Malacca by bus from Singapore. Joti's place is very easy to find and is located in the famous China Town area of Malacca.
We were very warmly welcomed by Joti, who by the way is a very eccentric person. I liked the fact that house is very simple. It has all the basic amenities - clean toilet, bathroom and bedroom along with a washing machine, AC, etc. Considering the fact that this is a 150 years old Chitya house with a courtyard, it very well naturally ventilated. However, at night you have to keep the AC on to keep away the mosquitoes (a common problem in the whole of Malacca).
We were given the whole of the first floor. Joti ensured that we had complete privacy and no disturbance. He is a very helpful person by way of suggesting the best places to eat and visit. He hand drew a map for us with all the locations marked on it. He also introduced us to his Trishaw rider friend Firdaus, who took us around Malacca on a 2 hour long, commented Trishaw ride, explaining the history of Malacca.
Overall, if you appreciate history and architecture, you will love this place.
My bus from Singapore arrived in Melaka after midnight and Joti was kind enough to help me find my way to his place, after a very warm welcome and introduction to the neighborhood, which is only a street away from all the yonker street walk, but surprisingly quiet. I had the entire upstairs + bathroom all to myself. The room leads out to a great balcony. The beautiful room (with aircon) and bathroom were clean and functional. While I was there, Joti invited me to a community party held out in the back alley. Jotis cooking was aaammmaaazing. really. He made me feel totally at home. Part of his little community. Oh and theres a bike rental right around the corner. It was way beyond what i expected. Thanks, Joti!!
We had a whole floor in a very charming and well decorated house. The place is very central but still calm and quiet. Yoti was a great host and advised us wisely on places to visit and to avoid. This was the most amazing room I ever had. I highly recommend this place!
