About this listing
This traditional 2 bedroom apartment lies in the quiet residential area of Catete/Gloria, in one of the oldest parts of Rio de Janiero, with wonderful views across the city to the Christ. It is very close to public transport to the City Centre via the Metro and bus, so is well placed for events like Carnaval, conferences, and tourism. It is surrounded by old-style private houses, quiet cobbled streets, and small bars, and sits on a small hill with a colonial era church on top – the street has been used by Brazilian TV companies as a location for historical dramas. The house is close to Flamengo beach (15 minutes walk). 5 minutes walk to the Metro (Catete/Gloria), halfway between the city centre and the beach areas of Ipanema, Botafogo and Copacabana. Taxis from the Metro take only 5 minutes to the house. The cultural quarter of Lapa is a few minutes walk away, with its famous bars, music clubs (samba, forro, choro, jazz etc), restaurants, antique shops and nightlife. It is close to a wide range of shops and malls, cafes, banks, museums etc. In many ways, this quiet area has all the charm of the more famous Santa Teresa, but is much closer to city centre transport and shopping, as well as the beach areas.
The accommodation is on the first floor, with communal entrance hall and stairs leading up the apartment entrance, and a living/ dining room, two large bedrooms, large shower bathroom, and a good-sized kitchen with gas cooker and fridge freezer. The bedrooms overlook the city with views across to the famous Cristo on the hill above Copcabana. Secure entrance from the street, free parking on the street.
No smoking anywhere in the house, please ! Please keep noise to a reasonable level - this is a quiet residential neighbourhood, well away from the hustle and bustle of Rio's main streets. No importation of furniture or decorations without the owners' permission. Please do not stick, nail or pin anything to the walls. No additional guests overnight without the owners' express permission. Rubbish must be put out onto the kerb in plastic bags on the collection days that will be notified on your arrival.
About the Host, Humphry
I am helping to manage the listed properties on behalf of my wife, Patricia Costa. I am English, she is Brazilian, and we divide our time between the UK and Brazil. We both work in film and TV production, although I am semi-retired now: and I am also involved in film education at university level. Between us, we speak English, Portuguese, French and Spanish, so we can help a wide range of people with queries about how to go about things in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil generally. We both love Brazilian music and culture, and are also involved in environmental issues, and follow the development of Brazil as an exciting emerging country with great interest. We like to have a friendly relationship with our guests, on the basis that you should treat people as you would like to be treated.
