Artsy Alberta Cottage Private Room

Our small cottage, in one of Portland's trendiest neighborhoods, abounds with creativity and cozy comfort. Your private room is bright, warm, and ready to support your time in Portland. We look forward to being your hosts.

The Space

Welcome to our artsy collage! Our home is a small one story filled with our art and colorful Navaho rugs, with Wayne's sculpture, paintings, and Kaya's pottery.

We have a piano in the living room and love when people play it! Our home is filled with plants and is warm and cozy all winter! In the spring and summer you will enjoy the garden and patio!

Your room has an excellent quality firm Queen bed with all organic cotton sheets and decorated with our hand-painted furniture. You share the full bath and have use of our fully outfitted kitchen.

Wireless internet and complimentary herbal teas and french press coffee is available in our handmade pottery mugs.

We are dual citizens and lived in New Zealand for 12 years and in an international community. We bring that spirit into our home and we both enjoy meeting new people from all over the world.

Guest Access

You have access to our kitchen for light food preparation, garden, living room, piano, shared bathroom, laundry and all the amazing cafes and hot spots in our trendy neighborhood. We have tons of maps and Portland area information plus we love helping people figure out where to go and how to enjoy the area!

Interaction with Guests

We love chatting when it happens. If there is time to share a cup of tea we always enjoy that too. If you prefer total privacy we of course, respect that as well.

The Neighborhood

Portland is unique in that much of the real Portlandia culture is on the east side of the river and this is where we are located.

We live in a close-in urban, neighborhood in NE Portland, just a short walk to Alberta Street and the many cafes, great food, boutiques and happenings here. There are almost a dozen yoga studies near by to choose from.

We are blocks from a half dozen Portland hand-crafted brew pubs and surrounded by many baristas. Every restaurant in our neighborhood has gluten-free and vegan options.

We are walking distance to two city parks and five minutes to New Seasons huge organic super market. We have a drawer full of Portland maps, bike routes and arts events information.

Concordia University is at the end of our street and it's a three minute drive to the antique shops on Mississippi Street.

Getting around

To easily get to the downtown spots; the Pearl, Saturday Market, and PSU, the bus is only 1.5 blocks and a 20 minute ride. You can come back here where it's quiet, peaceful, and welcoming!

Other Things to Note

Our tiny Poppet is sweet, extremely cute and friendly; however she is now older and will ignore you if you aren't interested.

We use only non-toxic cleaning products and tend to be health conscious!

  • We had a wonderful time with Kaya and Wayne in their cozy apartment in Portland. Their neighborhood was really close to the Alberta St. Arts District and there were some cool restaurants and shops close by. It was easy enough to walk to Alberta St. and find things to do (even though it was raining!). They were both very helpful in recommending things for us to see and do.

  • Oh where to begin...Staying with Kaya and Wayne at their quaint and cozy cottage has been a highlight of my time in Portland thus far. They accommodated my last minute reservation request with open hearts and a comfortable room for me to rest my head and have time to myself while I began training at my new job and apartment hunting. Despite the comfortable room, I found I preferred spending time in the open kitchen area with Wayne and Kaya, sharing tea, wonderful conversation, and smiles.

On top of my time in the house, the neighborhood is a fantastic locale within walking distance of vibrant Alberta Street where cafes, restaurants, yoga studios, and shops abound. Their place is also a quick block away from the number 8 bus that will bring you right downtown in under 30 minutes.

I would absolutely stay with this fantastic couple (and their adorable pup Poppet!) again, and recommend that you do too!

    Response from Kaya And Wayne:

Thanks so much Ariela! The feeling was mutual and so happy to have met you!

  • Had a lovely time in Portland. Kaya was extremely helpful & the house was a great base to discover the city as only a 20minute or so bus ride into town. Plus you get to meet & play with Poppet, the cutest dog in the world!

  • Kaya, Wayne and Poppet the dog are awesome. Kaya & Wayne went out of their way to make my stay comfortable and advise on buses, restaurants, and places in walking and busing distance. The room comes complete with a drawer of maps and bus schedules, lists of restaurants etc. The house is sweet and cute. The bed was comfy too.

  • We had a lovely visit to the Artsy Alberta Cottage. Great location, easy to come and go. Kaya and Wayne are easy going and good resource for things to see in the area.
HIghly recommend the Tin Shed for breakfast. Take the short walk and get there early to avoid a wait.
We were back to Alberta street for a light dinner and again for breakfast the second morning to La Vita - also excellent.
We would recommend Kaya and Wayne and their comfortable cottage.

  • Wow, we had an awesome experience visiting Portland and staying with Kaya and Wayne. We felt really welcome in their home, and enjoyed hanging out with them when we weren't out on town.

As a huge added benefit to us (because we hadn't really prepared much for this trip) they really tuned in to what we would like in terms of eating, drinking (mostly coffee mind you), and experiencing, and they gave us excellent recommendations.

Their house is close to Alberta St (easy walking distance) with great dining, coffee and shopping. There's also excellent public transportation where the house is, so it's totally easy to get around. We didn't rent a car and enjoyed travelling by bus and tram.

Of course an added bonus was Puppet, the most adorable little dog we ever met!

We miss all three of you!

  • Our hosts were so welcoming, warm and friendly, and we could easily imagine ourselves having stayed longer had we the time! Our lovely room was very comfortable, clean, quiet, and our privacy easily accomodated with the bathroom right across the hall. The creative atmosphere and art in this colorful house is cheerful and inspring. What a wonderful 'home away from home' for our pleasurable visit to Portland…we definitely recommend the Artsy Alberta Cottage!

  • We had a wonderful time in Portland while staying with Kaya and her husband Wayne (and Poppet, their little dog). They couldn't have been more hospitable. They showed us where their favorite restaurants were and gave us directions to other places we wanted to visit. We wanted to meet the "natives" to learn more about Portland and the Singers were the perfect natives. Public transportation was just down the block and made getting into Portland city center a snap. Plus we were within walking distance of quirky Alberta Street - good restaurants and the best ice cream ever at Salt and Straw!

  • Kaya and Wayne were wonderful hosts, as hospitable as humanly possible. Poppet the dog was also a great host! Kaya helped me out by recommending the best parts of nature in Oregon to see, and based on her information I had an amazing day on a tour of the Columbia River Gorge. The house is in a convenient location 2 mins walk from the bus into town, it's a very safe neighbourhood with loads of nice restaurants and shops up the street. I would definitely stay again and I recommend Kaya and Wayne's house to everybody! Thanks again for having me.

  • The set up was perfect for us as we really wanted a comfortable bed, friendly hosts and a quiet place. No complaints at all!

Hi and welcome! We live in Portland and we also lived in New Zealand for 12 years, enjoy community and meeting new people. Kaya is an entrepreneur and Wayne is an artist and social worker. We are both into health and wellness and enjoy riding our bikes around our folksy neighborhood as well as hiking in the Oregon forests. We are both gardeners and clay artists. You will see our painted furniture and other art in nooks and crannies when you visit our home. Wayne's pastel paintings adorn the living room. We look forward to meeting you.
