The Treehouse is a spacious bedroom + 2 private sundecks all to yourself on the top 3rd floor of authentic Hawaiian home surrounded by trees near the Anahola River. The gentle sound of waves can be heard in the distance at the local beach down the river. You can walk to the local secluded beach where you can swim, snorkel, boogie board, surf, bask in the sun or take a long walk on the beach. The Anahola beach is less than a mile down the river (3 minute drive or 25 minute walk). We are also walking distance to the local farmer's market every weekend, a convenience store for basic groceries, a Hawaiian shave ice stand and Kauai's best charbroiled hamburgers on the island.
The Treehouse is tucked away in a quiet local Hawaiian town for those who want to get away from it all, especially the tourism, and feel like you're in old Hawaii yet perfectly located to see everything on the island. We are halfway between the wetter and more lush north shore (Hanalei Bay and the world-famous Napali Coast) and the dryer south shore which is hotter and sunnier, but more touristy. Here in Anahola, the weather is absolutely perfect – sunny and warm virtually every day with occasional 3-5 minute refreshing tropical rain showers to bring everything to life. You can have the best of both worlds staying here and see ALL of Kauai from one place using our home as your home base and choose which way to go depending on the weather and your interests.
The Treehouse features a private top 3rd floor upstairs all to yourself with 1 queen bed (with memory foam mattress!), 1 double futon couch that opens into a 2nd bed, 1 private bathroom with bath tub, 1 outdoor shower, 2 private screened-in sundecks for your exclusive use, full access and use of the shared kitchen and dining room downstairs and the outdoor deck for enjoying meals outdoors with the birds and the trees. Coffee and food are not provided; however, there's room in the refrigerator for your food - you get your own shelf!
The Treehouse is spacious enough for couples and cozy enough for singles. While staying at the Treehouse, we are close enough to the beach that you can hear the gentle sound of waves in the background at night. Smell the fragrance of Plumerias (a favorite in leis), night blooming jasmines and gardenias that fill the air. Listen to the birds sing and coo all day long. Chickens with their baby chicks and scuttle through the yard looking for worms. Palm fronds and banana leaves flutter in the tropical breeze and dance in the rain. Banana trees burst with inflorescence producing an abundance of bananas. Coconuts drop daily so watch your head – if you’ve never had fresh coconut water, you’re in for a treat. Exotic birds of paradise mingle with the Papayas. My playful cats will entertain you and make you laugh. They are bursting with joy living in paradise and can’t help but show it. I feel the same way! I am fortunate to have found Airbnb to let other cool people know about my place with whom I can share a slice of paradise with. In every case without exception, everyone has one or more of the following experiences here: fun-filled, joyful, restful, peaceful, magical, memorable, spiritual, uplifting, life-inspiring and sometimes all of the above (especially if you sign up for one of our Epic Excursions (described in greater detail below) created just for our guests and those lucky enough to find us).
Epic Excursions: If you want to experience the most magical and beautiful parts of Kauai not open to the public or found in the guidebooks, please let me know. While living on Kauai and spending quality time with local Hawaiians, I have been shown the most pristine and beautiful parts of Kauai, places most residents living on Kauai still haven't seen. I can arrange for you to be guided to the most surreal places with by far the best scenic views of the island (Top of the World), or experience the magnificent power of the largest waterfall on Kauai by literally being taken inside and behind the waterfall (Waterfall Shower) or a day exploring Secret Caves and Coves frequented by turtles and dolphins, or rock hop up a river and hike through a green lush valley to the base of another stunning waterfall (Makaleha). These excursions vary in price depending on the number of guests and are not offered by anyone else. These are our discoveries and are only offered to our guests (or those lucky enough to find us). It’s very important to check available right away to plan this during your stay on Kauai around the weather and our schedules. Please inquire if this interests you.
Private parking, free high speed Internet, full kitchen, outdoor BBQ for grilling, boogie boards, snorkel gear (masks, fins, snorkels), beach mats and umbrellas, beach towels, beach chairs and coolers ALL included at no additional charge so you don’t have to rent, buy or pack these items for your trip. The washer & dryer available on the premises at $5 each per load (due to the very high cost of electricity in Hawaii).
Also included is a very cool hostess and in-house guide. According to my former guests, I'm an excellent hostess. They all say that after I give them my insider tips on what to do on the island or treat them to my homemade raw chocolate eternal bliss, fantasy cookies or specialty smoothies.
I know the island well, so I'm an excellent resource for choosing what's best to do on your island vacation, including where the best hikes are located, best snorkeling spots, where the dolphins and turtles swim (including their caves), and where are the best secluded beaches, etc.
The main criteria I care about more than anything else in sharing my space with guests is "quietness." If you think you are "loud by nature" or want to play music, watch TV, or make phone calls without headsets, this would not be a good fit for either of us. Instead, please choose one of the 2 private units offered under my listings.
Staying with me on your vacation can be either a secluded one where you keep to yourselves and have the upstairs all to yourselves or we can hang out together downstairs for a few meals and talk story. It's up to you. I meet very interesting people visiting Kauai this way. Sometimes it's their honeymoon as in the case of Nick and Amy from Vancouver Island, Canada. Other times it's life-changing as in the case of Claudia and Monika from Germany. No matter what, I assure you that staying with me on Kauai will be a most memorable vacation for you and your loved one or guests.
My partner is Swiss so we can assist you in three languages: English, German or French.
The best description of me and place are those written by former guests in my reviews. Be sure to read what they have to say. If you resonate with what they have say, then you'll know you came to the right place and will feel at home in a matter of minutes upon your arrival. This might also explain why my place books up full all year around. For this reason, the best way to help me choose a great fit for both of us is to read the house rules before inquiring to be sure the details fit your expectations AND tell me a little bit about yourselves, e.g. what drew you to my place, how long you'll be on Kauai, any special needs, etc.
The only way Airbnb lets you inquire and write to me is to first find available dates in my calendar first (even if you have to make them up). I highly recommend that you check for yourself by clicking on the "Calendar" Tab above the photos. If it's already booked for your dates, please check the calendars on my other listings which are adjacent to each other on the same property (see bottom right hand corner of this webpage for the other listings).
FACTOID: Did you know that when the Dalai Lama of Tibet came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1994, he asked to see only two places. Both requests were on Kauai and surprisingly he did not even ask to see the world-famous Napali Coast on Kauai. Instead, he asked to see Anahola and Polihale. When his surprised hosts asked why, he said "We [the spiritual leaders of Tibet] know Anahola is a portal where the souls or spirits enter this world and Polihale is where the souls or spirits exit this world." So there you have it, Anahola recommended by none other than the Dalai Lama himself. This is more than just a legend. There is a sacred pyramid shaped mountain peak in the backdrop of our home. In recent times this pyramid was filmed in the movie King Kong, but it's importance to Hawaiian history and culture is of much greater importance. There is a sacred birthing temple thousands of years old at the base of that mountain which is still guarded today by a living Kuhuna (Hawaiian priest of royal decent). Anahola is one of the most protected places on Kauai by the Hawaiians hence why there is very little tourism here and its the only town on this side of the island where portions are reserved exclusively for Hawaiians. Our home is one of the few in this Hawaiian village that is allowed to be owned and occupied by non-Hawaiians. We hope that you enjoy this unique opportunity to stay in a Hawaiian village far away from tourism yet conveniently located to see everything on the island from our home-base.
P.S. I have a 3 night minimum on all my units, unless there's only 2 nights open between bookings, then I will consider making an exception.
DO YOU NEED A RENTAL CAR? Often I get asked if a car is necessary on Kauai. Unequivocally, the answer is YES, unless you don't mind missing out on 80% of the best sights on the island. All the sights worth seeing are spread out across the island and the local bus and hitch-hiking cannot get you to most of these sights. The next most common question is about discount car rentals. Without exaggerating 70% of discount car rentals are unreliable and have problems so you are likely to play car rally for your first few days and that's assuming they have another 'running' car to offer you. The best car rental choices are the national brands, e.g. Enterprise, Thrifty, Avis, Hertz, Dollar, etc.

Cozy single unit and we enjoyed meeting and visiting with the other temporary residents of the house. The host shared some tips for places to go and headed a hike for guests that was AWESOME! Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and we would stay there again! When Sean mentions being quiet and respectful, that is necessary since the house has a fairly open floor plan.
We had an absolutely great time, staying at Treehouse # 1.
The Place is very nice, clean and the kitchen left no wishes open.
Sean is a great host, she’s always around to answer questions and she will give you tips what you can do on the Island. Staying at the
Treehouse brought us a bunch of new friends all over the world
as we had dinner in the shared kitchen. We would definitely
recommend the Treehouse for your stay on Kauai.
I almost forgot to mention.. you should try the outside shower… best thing ever!
I could tell right away that Sean's place would be a great fit for us -and it was. Beautiful wood loft, peaceful tree-filled yard, good energy from host & guests alike. Met neat people from other places in the communal kitchen. Plenty of cute little nooks to tuck yourself away for morning coffee. Thanks for the lovely stay, Sean, what a terrific home base for our Kauai adventures ~Amber & Kevin
Kaui is a great place to be and this is a great way to see it. Sean was extremely helpful and the other people staying at the place were easy to get along with. You fee like you're in nature at this place, but it's wonderfully located between the two developed areas, so you can easily access both. We especially enjoyed Sean's adventure tour into the Waimea Canyon because it led us through amazing trails that we would not have attempted on our own, though they were quite doable in the end. It was a great trip!
Sean's place was clean, comfortable, perfectly located, and beautiful. Sean herself was incredibly welcoming and friendly and more of a friend with valuable island insights and fun ideas and invitations than a chilly or distant space-renter. She even had a copy of the Kauai blue book for us to borrow. True hospitality.
Mahalo Luz and Christoffer for your fabulous energy and appreciation. You were both such delightful guests. Please stay longer next time! Glad you liked the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook that I loan to all our guests to make the most of their stay. Happy my personal insights and suggestions were valuable as well.
Sean's place was really fun. I enjoyed the time there. There were a few of us that came to Anahola to do a project and rented three of Sean's spaces for 12 days and it worked out well. I hope we were good guests. The rooms in the house are communal and require a fair level of social cooperation. The treehouse is the upstairs level of an A-frame house and the walls are open at the top, so there is visual privacy but the sound carries. This construction creates a nice air-flow between indoors and out but if you're fierce about privacy, you might book a different room. Inside the house, there will likely be people in other rooms who aren't in sync with your habits and schedules.
If you are receptive to it, there is a genuine Hawaiiana feeling here, Multiple facets of earth, nature and sky. Rain, flowers, fruit, and compost. People living simply and having reasonable relationships, but this can be incomprehensible to conventional social norms. This is a gentle hideaway--a form of bliss--you can rent short-term.
The wifi is decent and runs throughout the house. It's easy to come and go from this dell and Anahola beach is very sweet. Absolutely you can walk there but there is a brief traverse of highway.
Sean is kind and helpful and practical. She shows genuine concern without doting. In fact, she is quite dear and her level of sensitivity is above and beyond letting rooms for a living, which typically requires a slight level of callousness that is clearly not her nature.
The rooms are homey and cozy but not glamorous. Rooms inside the house are akin to a home-stay, not a resort. By this I mean casual, but the things that matter are in abundance eg corners of the house where you feel charmed and private, Soft breezes and meditative vistas. Beds are comfortable as described; linens and towels are plentiful. Bath amenities are generously provided and the kitchen well-outfitted. Easy laundry. Generous beach supplies. This is simple, self-reliant accommodation. Sean assumes some intelligence in her clientele. We took an excursion with lovely Alexandra and everyone returned awed not only by the wonders of the land but charmed by Alexandra herself.
Thank you Teresa for this very thoughtful and insightful review. It's really spot on and one of the best written genuine descriptions of my place and my personality. I appreciate the way you articulated the need for awareness and social cooperation in the shared/hosted environment of the Treehouse rooms. Sound does carry and for this reason we advertise our listings to seek quiet guests and ask that they use headsets for audio devices so as not to disturb others. No one wants to go on vacation and listen to others watch TV or make cell phone calls or have loud conversations in the kitchen or dining room while you're resting peacefully in your private bedroom. For this reason, we ask for whisper voice levels between 9pm - 9am in the common areas of the Treehouse. For those who prefer more flexibility with their audible levels, the two private suites are a better fit. Regardless of which room or private suite is booked, I do favor guests who seem to have an awareness of others.
My mom and I had an amazing time staying at Sean's treehouse! We stayed in Kauai for 9 days and chose to spend the whole time at Sean's instead of splitting it between bnb's like we heard some other people doing. I think it was a great choice! The location of Sean's place in Anahola is great because it's close to the beautiful green north side of the island where my mom and I spent most of our time exploring. Sean and Alex are fantastic hosts! We became very bonded with them during our stay along with their 3 cats. We went on 2 of the epic excursions as well and I highly recommend them!!! We went on the "Top of the World" hike and the "Waterfall Immersion Experience". An an outsider to the island it's hard to find the hidden gems, so we are really glad we chose to make the most of our trip and go on these excursions! Both of those days were the highlights of our trip as we were seeing amazing things and also in excellent company. My mom does not hike that much but she definitely had the enthusiasm to try both of the excursions, so Sean thought it would be fine to take her along. Not only did Sean find and clean proper shoes for my mom (as we had left our proper hiking boots at home, oops), but she took excellent care of my mom when we were hiking on both excursions. She guided my mom the whole time, telling her where to step if the trail was tricky and offering my mom her hand. I was amazed at Sean's kindness and generosity. We went on the excursions with 2 of Sean's other guests and became good friends with them as well. After the waterfall excursion my mom was so happy that she decided to make an indian dinner for everyone that evening!! After dinner we played a fun board game together. Overall it was a very special trip and I'm so glad we decided to stay at Sean's place!
Thank you Amber and your mom. We have very fond memories as well of the special times we shared with both of you. Taking guests on the Epic Adventures is always the highlight of my life here. It was even more meaningful with your light-hardheartedness, playfulness, and deep appreciation. You and your mom are gems and that's what made your trip glow for everyone.
We had a great time staying at the Treehouse. Sean and Alexandra were very friendly hosts. The house was beautiful and only a mile walk (or drive) from a quiet beach. We fell in love with the cats as well, especially Skippy.
I'd strongly recommend the excursions to anyone staying there. They may have been the best part of our trip. We went on the Waterfall Shower and Top of the World hikes. Both were literally (and I don't use that word lightly) breathtaking for me.
Sean and Alex were the best hosts anyone could ask for, and readily available to answer questions only locals would know. They are both fun loving and environmentally conscious, which was a definite plus. Although we truly enjoyed our stay, I would recommend reserving the downstairs bedroom for easier access to the downstairs areas. Still, a five star experience through and through, particularly the weekend Farmer's Market (get the chicken and cold coconut water). Stay here if you want a Kauai experience that no hotel could ever offer.
This was exactly what my wife and I were hoping. From the moment we arrived Sean was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. We really felt we could calm down and relax from our busy life back at home. We had the entire second floor with a private bath and small enclosed porch with a hammock! Oh and how I already miss the hammock. There were cool breezes and such an abundance of fresh air.
The house was very close to the beach and more importantly not in a touristy area of the island. It takes about fifteen minutes to get into town from the tree house and there are some small shops and a bunch of touristy restaurants. In other words, you are close enough to civilization to get what you need but far enough away to enjoy the peace, quiet, and unwind.
For my wife and I, the best part of the vacation was being around Sean and the other guest. We went on two awesome hikes that are not in the guidebooks, one to a waterfall, and another that had some breathtaking views. If you enjoy hikes and are fit enough to do them, please ask her about them. They are worth it but she needs a certain number of people to go for each one.
Most importantly, my wife and I feel like we made actual friends, not just acquaintances. And we will be making sure to keep in touch with them. My wife and I will be going back as soon as we can swing it; we will just be making sure we can stay longer next time.
Aloha Donny and Row, mahalos for your gratitude and warm review. We felt the same way. You both felt like family... the easy going type! Was so fun having you here. Really missing the board games! So pleased you had a memorable time on the epic hikes/experiences off the beaten path. We have some secret caves and coves to show you next time and paddle boarding on a private journey up the most beautiful river on Kauai. After 37 years, I'm still exploring and discovering new things on Kauai. Until we meet again in paradise. Mahalo,
